2D photonic defect layers in 3D inverted opals on Si platforms
2006
Dielectric spheres synthesised for the fabrication of self-organized photonic crystals such as opals offer large opportunities for the design of novel nanophotonic devices. In this paper, we show a hexagonal superlattice monolayer of dielectric spheres inscribed on a 3D colloidal photonic crystal by e-beam lithography. The crystal is produced by a variation of the vertical drawing deposition method assisted by an acoustic field. The structures were chosen after simulations showed that a hexagonal super-lattice monolayer in air exhibits an even photonic band gap below the light cone if the refractive index of the spheres is higher than 1.93.
Direct optical measurement of light coupling into planar waveguide by plasmonic nanoparticles
2012
Coupling of light into a thin layer of high refractive index material by plasmonic nanoparticles has been widely studied for application in photovoltaic devices, such as thin-film solar cells. In numerous studies this coupling has been investigated through measurement of e.g. quantum efficiency or photocurrent enhancement. Here we present a direct optical measurement of light coupling into a waveguide by plasmonic nanoparticles. We investigate the coupling efficiency into the guided modes within the waveguide by illuminating the surface of a sample, consisting of a glass slide coated with a high refractive index planar waveguide and plasmonic nanoparticles, while directly measuring the inte…

Spatially resolved photonic transfer through mesoscopic heterowires
2002
We report spatially resolved observations of light wave propagation along high refraction index dielectric heterowires lying on a transparent substrate. The heterowires are made of linear chains of closely packed mesoscopic particles. The optical excitation of these heterowires is performed through channel waveguides featuring submicrometer transverse cross sections. Both numerical simulations and near-field optical images, recorded with a photon scanning tunneling microscope, agree to show that, at visible frequencies, tuning the periodicity of the heterowires controls the propagation length within a range of several micrometers.
Optical transfer function engineering for a tunable 3D structured illumination microscope
2019
Two important features of three-dimensional structured illumination microscopy (3D-SIM) are its optical sectioning (OS) and super-resolution (SR) capabilities. Previous works on 3D-SIM systems show that these features are coupled. We demonstrate that a 3D-SIM system using a Fresnel biprism illuminated by multiple linear incoherent sources provides a structured illumination pattern whose lateral and axial modulation frequencies can be tuned separately. Therefore, the compact support of the synthetic optical transfer function (OTF) can be engineered to achieve the highest OS and SR capabilities for a particular imaging application. Theoretical performance of our engineered system based on the…
Accommodation-related changes in monochromatic aberrations of the human eye as a function of age.
2008
PURPOSE. To investigate the relationship between accommodation and the optical aberrations of the whole human eye, as a function of age. METHODS. Sixty healthy subjects with spherical ametropia in the range 3 D, astigmatism less than 1 D, corrected visual acuity of 20/18 or better, and normal findings in an ophthalmic examination were enrolled. Subjects were divided into four groups, with age ranges of 19 to 29, 30 to 39, 40 to 49, and 50 to 60 years. Monochromatic optical aberrations and pupil size were measured with a Hartmann-Shack wavefront sensor under monocular viewing conditions, without pharmacological dilation or cycloplegia. Stimulus vergences were in the range of 0 to 5 D, with a…
Anisotropic Elasto-optic Effect in Optical Fibers under Axial Strain: Experimental Observation by means of Whispering Gallery Modes Resonances
2014
Experimental characterization of the refractive index anisotropy generated by the elasto optic effect in a conventional optical fiber under axial strain by using WGMs resonances and their tunability with strain.
Hybrid surface plasma modes in circular metal-coated tapered fibers
1999
The theory of hybrid surface plasma modes in metal-coated dielectric cylinders has been developed in recent years. We demonstrate that tapered fibers with a uniform waist and a circular metal coating can be designed for an efficient excitation of the fundamental hybrid surface plasma mode. Our experimental results are in good agreement with the theory and give the basis for the development of a novel type of all-fiber polarization-independent refractive-index sensor and tunable broadband wavelength filter.
Optical properties of in-vitro biomineralised silica
2012
Silicon is the second most common element on the Earth's crust and its oxide (SiO(2)) the most abundant mineral. Silica and silicates are widely used in medicine and industry as well as in micro- and nano-optics and electronics. However, the fabrication of glass fibres and components requires high temperature and non-physiological conditions, in contrast to biosilica structures in animals and plants. Here, we show for the first time the use of recombinant silicatein-α, the most abundant subunit of sponge proteins catalyzing biosilicification reactions, to direct the formation of optical waveguides in-vitro through soft microlithography. The artificial biosilica fibres mimic the natural spon…
A study of the refractive index and surface tension synergy of the binary water/ethanol: influence of concentration
2005
Pure alcohols or alcohols mixed with water are the most widely used solvents in a great variety of industrial applications, including the formulation of pharmaceutical and cosmetic products. As a result of water/alcohol molecular associations, variations result in the physico-chemical characteristics of the system, such as density, viscosity, refractive index and surface tension. The present study investigates the refractive index and the surface tension of ethanol and water mixtures at a temperature of 25°C, for different molar fractions. The data obtained allow us to study the corresponding refractive index and the surface tension synergies; in this sense, an absolute maximum refractive i…
