Abstract Though geographically distant from each other, Portugal and Finland present an interesting comparison concerning the policies and devices of asylum. Both provide an informed and critical appraisal of the current international response to the refugee issue, especially considering the European Union. In this paper, we compare two seemingly very similar instances in which individuals and organizations within the borders of the global North have memorialized the deaths of irregular migrants at sea: the SIEV X memorial in Australia’s national capital Canberra, and the Giardino della memoria (Garden of Remembrance) on the Italian island of Lampedusa. Unlike ephemeral manifestations of grief, potentially these memorials have effects that reach well beyond their creation. Celem badań przedstawionych w niniejszym artykule było zdiagnozowanie miejsca oraz ram interpretacyjnych (framingu) zagadnień związanych z bezpieczeństwem w debatach przedwyborczych. Analizie poddane zostały debaty telewizyjne, które odbyły się w miastach wojewódzkich przed wyborami samorządowymi z 2014 r. oraz parlamentarnymi z 2015 r. Prezentowane badania pokazują zasadnicze zróżnicowanie, zarówno jeśli chodzi o obecność kwestii bezpieczeństwa w debacie na poziomie krajowym ^lokalnym, jak i narracji stosowanej w odniesieniu do poszczególnych typów bezpieczeństwa.
