From refugee integration to the theory of change for integration. The evolution of the approach to social integration in the UK at the beginning of t…

2020

The need and willingness to change motivates decision-makers and practitioners in the UK to take decisive integrationoriented measures. The country has never succeeded in developing its own original policy in this area. The first steps were taken in 2004 with the publication of the Indicators of Integration, but it was onlyin recent years that work on integration management has been intensified. There is a clear departure from focusing on individual aspects of integration and implementing a problem management system in a broader context. This is reflected in the publication of the Home Office Indicators for Integration framework (2019). The document is based on the 2004 version, but present…

Socio-spatial polarisation and policy response: Perspectives for regional development in the Baltic States

2022

Based on a relational understanding of socio-spatial polarisation as a nested, multidimensional and multi-scalar process, the paper applies a comparative perspective on current trends of socio-spatial development in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Comparing current scholarship and data on demographic and economic processes of centralisation and peripheralisation, we also examine political debates around issues of polarisation in different scholarly national perspectives. Despite variations in national discourses, our comparative perspective conveys strong similarities between the three Baltic countries in terms of socio-economic and demographic concentration in the capital regions to the di…

Absorption of Structural Funds – International Comparisons and Correlations

2013

Abstract Structural Funds represent one of the main instruments which The European Union uses to sustain regional development and to eliminate disparities between members. Specialized literature is relatively poor when it comes to approaching this subject. In the period 2002-2006, several papers were written, which identified the absorption process's influence factors, but all these materials represented ex-ante analysis, the empirical testing of theories being virtually impossible. The present paper, based on available statistical data related to the absorption process, aims at testing these factors, trying to elucidate the great differences obtained by the EU members within Central and Ea…

Tourism planning and innovation: The Caribbean under the spotlight

2018

International audience; The importance of the islands working together toward a multicentre product for tourists has been highlighted asearly as the 1980s, and yet hardly anything has been done in that sense. Can cluster be considered as the wayforward for the sustainable development of the Caribbean? This question could be considered as the first step ofthe tourism planning process. Hierarchical method or linkage method that works by identifying entities thatmatch each other based on the investigator selection of similar attribute categories is the most suitable clusteringapproach for the Caribbean. Despite the fact that cluster appears as a potential solution for issues faced by someCarib…

Nordic Cooperation in the Nuclear Safety Sector: High, Low, or Differentiated Integration?

2020

Nordic cooperation has been depicted as eroding due to the increased importance of EU-related cooperation and integration. However, scholars propose that longstanding Nordic networks, grounded in professions and located in the state administration, may prove to be more robust toward external changes. This article discusses this proposal by looking at Nordic cooperation between the national radiation protection and nuclear safety authorities in Iceland, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and Finland. The article maps behavioural perceptions of agency staff based on a dataset of 37 interviews to illustrate if the cooperation between the Nordic authorities is characterized by high integration, low integ…

The Last Ten Years of Regional Science: Advances in Theory and in Policy Evaluation

2020

Some months ago, the Scientific Board of AISRe and the Editor of this Journal asked us, also in our capacities as immediate Past Presidents of the Association, to edit a new celebratory special issue with a specific focus on the past ten years. We asked prominent Italian scholars in the field to review the most significant studies produced mostly in the past decade (including their own) and to address new topics that had not been covered by the previous celebratory issue or that had registered important advances since then.

2021

This book approaches the tourism and hospitality industry from a regional science perspective. By analyzing the spatial context of tourist travels, the hospitality sector, and the regional impacts of tourist activities, it demonstrates the value of the regional science paradigm for understanding the dynamics and effects of tourism and hospitality-related phenomena. Written by leading regional science scholars from various countries as well as professionals from organizations such as OECD and AirBnB, the contributions address topics such as migration, new types of accommodation, segmentation of tourism demand, and the potential use of tracking technologies in tourism research. The content is…
