Anatomical basis for the interposition of a gastric pouch between the ileum and the anus after total proctocolectomy.
2003
After a total proctocolectomy, ileoanal continuity is achieved by an ileal pouch–anal anastomosis. This anastomosis is not possible when the ileum cannot reach the anus. To avoid definitive ileostomy in this circumstance, we devised a gastric pouch, taken from the left half of the vertical portion of the stomach, vascularized by the right gastroepiploic pedicle, then interposed it between the ileum and the anus. The aim of this anatomical study on seven cadavers was to estimate the capacity of this gastric pouch to reach the anus. The distance between the caudal edge of the pubic symphysis and the apex of the pouch was measured. It is accepted that an ileal pouch always reaches the anus wit…
Hormone Replacement Therapy Associated White Blood Cell DNA Methylation and Gene Expression are Associated With Within-Pair Differences of Body Adipo…
2015
The loss of estrogen during menopause causes changes in the female body, with wide-ranging effects on health. Estrogen-containing hormone replacement therapy (HRT) leads to a relief of typical menopausal symptoms, benefits bone and muscle health, and is associated with tissue-specific gene expression profiles. As gene expression is controlled by epigenetic factors (including DNA methylation), many of which are environmentally sensitive, it is plausible that at least part of the HRT-associated gene expression is due to changes in DNA methylation profile. We investigated genome-wide DNA methylation and gene expression patterns of white blood cells (WBCs) and their associations with body compo…
Commentary: Preliminary Evidence for Training-Induced Changes of Morphology and Phantom Limb Pain
2019
The aim of this study was to investigate whether a special prosthetic training in phantom limb pain patients aimed at increasing the functional use of the prosthesis leads to neural morphological plasticity of brain structures and a reduction in phantom limb pain. For chronic pain disorders, it was shown that morphological alterations due to pain might become at least partially reversed by pain therapies. Phantom limb pain is a chronic pain disorder that is frequently followed by neural plasticity of anatomical brain structures. In our study, 10 patients with amputation of the upper limb participated in a two-week training with a myoelectric prosthesis with somatosensory feedback. Grip stre…
Murine bone marrow-derived mast cells as potent producers of IL-9: costimulatory function of IL-10 and kit ligand in the presence of IL-1.
2000
Abstract Recently, the Th2-type cytokine IL-9 was identified by genetic mapping analyses as a key mediator that determines the susceptibility to asthma. This has been further supported by data from IL-9-transgenic mice in which the overexpression of IL-9 in the lung causes airway inflammation, mast cell hyperplasia, and bronchial hyperresponsiveness. In an accompanying paper, we demonstrate that murine bone marrow-derived mast cells (BMMC) after stimulation with either ionomycin, a combination of ionomycin and IL-1, or via IgE-Ag complexes and IL-1 are very potent producers of IL-9. Herein we show that a dramatic increase of IL-9 production is observed when BMMC activated with ionomycin/IL-…
Frequency of polymorphisms of signal peptide of TGF-beta1 and -1082G/A SNP at the promoter region of Il-10 gene in patients with carotid stenosis
2006
The role of inflammation in atherosclerosis is well recognized. We have evaluated the allele frequencies of the +869T/C and +915G/C polymorphisms (SNPs) at the TGF-beta1 gene and -1082G/A SNP at IL-10 promoter sequence, two well-known immunosuppressive and anti-inflammatory cytokines, in patients with carotid stenosis. Our data suggest a lack of association between these SNPs and the susceptibility to atherosclerosis although other reports have demonstrated this association. These results may be due to the pleiotropic effects of the cytokines and/or differences in haplotype combination that should be investigated to elucidate the role of TGF-beta1 and IL-10 polymorphisms in atherosclerosis.
THU0713 How the variation in the lumbopelvic patterns of movement affects the neuromotor control of the biceps femoris during trunk forward bending
2017
Background Trunk forward bending is one of the most common activities in daily living; it is a two-part movement involving the lumbar spine flexion and pelvis rotation at hip joint. The pattern of movement during forward bending was defined as the relative contribution of the lumbar spine to pelvis motion, and was expressed as the ratio between the ranges of lumbar spine motion to pelvis motion (L/P), which, calculated at certain degrees of trunk flexion during the entire movement, provides the lumbo-pelvic rhythm. This is associated with a specific pattern of activation for back and hip extensor muscles which was coined as flexion relaxation phenomenon, observed either in the erector spina…
EFFECTS OF STRIKING STRATEGY ON LOWER EXTREMITY LOADING DURING RUNNING
2013
Backround It is expected that every second runner has a running-related overuse injury each year. The knee joint and Achilles tendon are the most commonly injured sites covering both about one fifth of all running related injuries. 1 Runners can be categorized into rearfoot strikers, mid-foot strikers or forefoot strikers based on the landing strategy at the instant of initial ground contact. Forefoot or mid-foot striking has been shown to reduce impact peak and loading rate of the ground reaction force during early stance phase. 2 Furthermore, the finding of the recent study suggest that forefoot striking may potentially decrease the risk of running-related injuries. 3 However, the effect …
HLA-B27-restricted T cells from patients with ankylosing spondylitis recognize peptides from B*2705 that are similar to bacteria-derived peptides
2003
SUMMARY Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is an inflammatory systemic disease affecting the spine, sacroiliacal and peripheral joints. Although the aetiology of AS remains unknown, the strong association with the HLA-B27 allele might reflect directly a detrimental effect of the HLA-B27 molecule itself, resulting from its potential capability to present ‘arthritogenic’ peptides to CD8+ T cells. Because some forms of SpA are triggered by enterobacterial infection, such arthritogenic peptides might originate from autologous and/or bacterial proteins triggering cross-reactive CD8+ T cell clones. Intriguingly, two peptides from the second extracellular domain of HLA-B*2705 share sequence homologies wi…
Plantar pressure distribution analysis in normal weight young women and men with normal and claw feet: a cross-sectional study
2005
We analyzed the plantar support in 72 normal-weight young voluntaries (46 women, 26 men), by a baropodometric platform. We considered subjects with claw foot (CFS) and subjects with normal foot (NFS). We found a significant reduction of total plantar support surface in the CFS (P < 0.0001 for women, P < 0.001 for men), due to the reduction of the forefoot and rear foot areas of both plantar imprints. Indeed, CFS of both sexes exhibited higher values of both plantar pressure and peak pressure, compared to the NFS. Moreover, the load per units of plantar surface increased in CFS compared to the NFS. In conclusion, the reduction of plantar support surfaces in CFS of both sexes was associated t…
Pain and clinical findings in the low back: a study of industrial employees with 5-, 10-, and 28-year follow-ups.
2009
Little is known about the relationships of clinical findings in the low back with low back pain (LBP) in the normal working population. We studied whether physiotherapist's findings in the low back were associated with local and radiating LBP among a cohort (n=902) of employees in the engineering industry. A systematic non-proportional sample was drawn in strata by age, gender, and occupational class. The non-proportionality aimed at increasing sample size in smaller strata. Physiotherapists performed the straight-leg raising test (SRL), and made assessments of the fingertip-to-floor distance and pain in palpation of the lumbar interspinous spaces. The variables on pain at the interspinous …
