Use of antidepressants among Finnish family caregivers : a nationwide register-based study

2021

Abstract Purpose The purpose of this study was to compare the use of antidepressants over 6 years between family caregivers providing high-intensity care and a matched control population using register-based data. Methods The study includes all individuals, who received family caregiver’s allowance in Finland in 2012 (n = 29,846 females, mean age 66 years; n = 12,410 males, mean age 71 years) and a control population matched for age, sex, and municipality of residence (n = 59,141 females; n = 24,477 males). Information on purchases of antidepressants, including the number of defined daily doses (DDD) purchased, between 2012 and 2017 was obtained from the national drugs reimbursement registe…

Long-term anti-TNF therapy and the risk of serious infections in a cohort of patients with rheumatoid arthritis: Comparison of adalimumab, etanercept…

2012

Objective: To evaluate the risk of serious infections (SIs) in RA patients receiving anti-TNF therapy on the basis of the data included in the GISEA register. METHODS: The study involved 2769 adult patients with long-standing RA (mean age 53.2±13.4years; mean disease duration 9.0±8.3years) enrolled in the GISEA register, who had been treated for at least 6months with TNF inhibitors or had discontinued therapy due to SI: 837 (30%) treated with infliximab (IFN), 802 (29%) with adalimumab (ADA), and 1130 (41%) with etanercept (ETN). RESULTS: 176 patients had experienced at least one of the 226 Sis during the 9years of treatment with an anti-TNF agent, an overall incidence of 31.8/1000 patient-…

Advanced time-stamped total data acquisition control front-end for MeV ion beam microscopy and proton beam writing

2013

Many ion-matter interactions exhibit [email protected] time dependences such as, fluorophore emission quenching and ion beam induced charge (IBIC). Conventional event-mode MeV ion microbeam data acquisition systems discard the time information. Here we describe a fast time-stamping data acquisition front-end based on the concurrent processing capabilities of a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA). The system is intended for MeV ion microscopy and MeV ion beam lithography. The speed of the system (>240,000 events s^-^1 for four analogue to digital converters (ADC)) is limited by the ADC throughput and data handling speed of the host computer.

Multithreaded Peripheral Processor for a Multicore Embedded System

2012

Multithreaded and multicore architectures represent a good solution used for increasing of parallelism degree exploited in modern computing systems and they can reduce the power dissipated in the chip by using low-frequency clock signals. These advantages recommend these parallel architectures for integration in the embedded systems, with restrictions imposed by the relatively small integration area. Particularities of embedded applications require hardware support able to handling in real time the peripheral interrupt requests. The performance of this hardware influences the performance of the entire parallel system. The current trend is to integrate in one microcontroller more processors …

Genetic Algorithms: A Decision Tool in Industrial Disassembly

2008

In the recycling process of the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) the disassembly process has a central role. Disassembly is not the reverse of the assembly process, real difficulties occur in the tasks assignment process of the disassembly operations. Since this is a multi objective optimization problem, we prove that genetic algorithms provide a useful multi-criteria decision tool in the industrial disassembly process.

Do patients' and referral centers' characteristics influence multiple sclerosis phenotypes? Results from the Italian multiple sclerosis and related d…

2022

Abstract Background Multiple sclerosis (MS) is characterized by phenotypical heterogeneity, partly resulting from demographic and environmental risk factors. Socio-economic factors and the characteristics of local MS facilities might also play a part. Methods This study included patients with a confirmed MS diagnosis enrolled in the Italian MS and Related Disorders Register in 2000–2021. Patients at first visit were classified as having a clinically isolated syndrome (CIS), relapsing–remitting (RR), primary progressive (PP), progressive-relapsing (PR), or secondary progressive MS (SP). Demographic and clinical characteristics were analyzed, with centers’ characteristics, geographic macro-ar…

Progressive active mobilization with dose control and training load in critically ill patients (PROMOB): Protocol for a randomized controlled trial

2020

The dose of progressive active mobilization is still uncertain. The purpose of this study is to identify if the addition of a protocol of progressive active mobilization with dose and training load control to usual care is effective in reducing the length of stay in intensive care unit (ICU) and the improvement of the functioning, incidence of ICU-acquired weakness (ICUAW), mechanical ventilation duration and mortality rate in patients hospitalized in ICU. It is Double-blind randomised clinical trial. The setting for this trial will be medical and surgical ICU of a university hospital. The study participants will be 118 patients aged> 18 years admitted to ICU for less than 72 hours. Partici…

Modelling the relationships between emotional responses to, and musical content of, music therapy improvisations

2007

This article reports a study in which listeners were asked to provide continuous ratings of perceived emotional content of clinical music therapy improvisations. Participants were presented with 20 short excerpts of music therapy improvisations, and had to rate perceived activity, pleasantness and strength using a computer-based slider interface. A total of nine musical features relating to various aspects of the music (timing, register, dynamics, tonality, pulse clarity and sensory dissonance) were extracted from the excerpts, and relationships between these features and participants' emotion ratings were investigated. The data were analysed in three stages. First, inter-dimension correla…

Comparison of HapMap and 1000 genomes reference panels in a large-scale genome-wide association study

2017

An increasing number of genome-wide association (GWA) studies are now using the higher resolution 1000 Genomes Project reference panel (1000G) for imputation, with the expectation that 1000G imputation will lead to the discovery of additional associated loci when compared to HapMap imputation. In order to assess the improvement of 1000G over HapMap imputation in identifying associated loci, we compared the results of GWA studies of circulating fibrinogen based on the two reference panels. Using both HapMap and 1000G imputation we performed a meta-analysis of 22 studies comprising the same 91,953 individuals. We identified six additional signals using 1000G imputation, while 29 loci were ass…

Applying polygenic risk scoring for psychiatric disorders to a large family with bipolar disorder and major depressive disorder

2018

Psychiatric disorders are thought to have a complex genetic pathology consisting of interplay of common and rare variation. Traditionally, pedigrees are used to shed light on the latter only, while here we discuss the application of polygenic risk scores to also highlight patterns of common genetic risk. We analyze polygenic risk scores for psychiatric disorders in a large pedigree (n ~ 260) in which 30% of family members suffer from major depressive disorder or bipolar disorder. Studying patterns of assortative mating and anticipation, it appears increased polygenic risk is contributed by affected individuals who married into the family, resulting in an increasing genetic risk over generat…
