On gravitational waves in Born-Infeld inspired non-singular cosmologies

2017

We study the evolution of gravitational waves for non-singular cosmological solutions within the framework of Born-Infeld inspired gravity theories, with special emphasis on the Eddington-inspired Born-Infeld theory. We review the existence of two types of non-singular cosmologies, namely bouncing and asymptotically Minkowski solutions, from a perspective that makes their features more apparent. We study in detail the propagation of gravitational waves near these non-singular solutions and carefully discuss the origin and severity of the instabilities and strong coupling problems that appear. We also investigate the role of the adiabatic sound speed of the matter sector in the regularisatio…

Born–Infeld inspired modifications of gravity

2017

General Relativity has shown an outstanding observational success in the scales where it has been directly tested. However, modifications have been intensively explored in the regimes where it seems either incomplete or signals its own limit of validity. In particular, the breakdown of unitarity near the Planck scale strongly suggests that General Relativity needs to be modified at high energies and quantum gravity effects are expected to be important. This is related to the existence of spacetime singularities when the solutions of General Relativity are extrapolated to regimes where curvatures are large. In this sense, Born-Infeld inspired modifications of gravity have shown an extraordin…

Diurnal variation of tree pollen in the air in finland

1984

Abstract The pollen was collected with Burkard spore traps in Turku and Jyvaskyla, in southern and central Finland. Selected days of high concentration were analysed for hour to hour concentrations. The diurnal variation of pollen concentration was variable in Alnus, Betula, Juniperus and Pinus, while Picea, Populus, Quercus, Salix and Ulmus had regular daytime maxima och nightly minima. The pollen concentrations were closely correlated with increasing temperatures and decreasing relative humidities. A significant relationship with wind speed was also found, except in Alnuts and Betula. The most significant relationships with wind speed were found in Salix and Quercus, the pollen of which t…

Large eddy simulations on the effect of the irregular roughness shape on turbulent channel flows

2019

Abstract Large Eddy Simulations (LES) are carried out to investigate on the mean flow in turbulent channel flows over irregular rough surfaces. Here the attention is focused to selectively investigate on the effect induced by crests or cavities of the roughness. The irregular shape is generated through the super-imposition of sinusoidal functions having random amplitude and four different wave-lengths. The irregular roughness profile is reproduced along the spanwise direction in order to obtain a 2D rough shape. The analysis of the mean velocity profiles shows that roughness crests induce higher effect in the outer-region whereas roughness cavities cause the highest effects in the inner-reg…

Regularity and h-polynomials of toric ideals of graphs

2020

For all integers 4 ≤ r ≤ d 4 \leq r \leq d , we show that there exists a finite simple graph G = G r , d G= G_{r,d} with toric ideal I G ⊂ R I_G \subset R such that R / I G R/I_G has (Castelnuovo–Mumford) regularity r r and h h -polynomial of degree d d . To achieve this goal, we identify a family of graphs such that the graded Betti numbers of the associated toric ideal agree with its initial ideal, and, furthermore, that this initial ideal has linear quotients. As a corollary, we can recover a result of Hibi, Higashitani, Kimura, and O’Keefe that compares the depth and dimension of toric ideals of graphs.

The diagnosis of polycystic ovary syndrome in adolescents

2010

In women, the definition of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) has become broad and includes several possible phenotypes. Because several features of PCOS may be in evolution in adolescents, we suggest that only firm criteria should be used to make a diagnosis of PCOS during adolescence. Hyperandrogenism, oligomenorrhea, and ovarian morphology change during adolescence and are discussed individually. Adolescents with incomplete criteria for a firm diagnosis of PCOS should be followed up carefully and may be diagnosed at a later time.

Line Shape Measurement and Modelling for Plasma Diagnostics

2014

In this paper we discuss different methods of narrow spectral line shape measurements for a wide spectral range by means of high-resolution spectrometers such as the Fabry-Perot spectrometer, Zeeman spectrometer and Fourier transform spectrometer as well as a theoretical model for spectral line shape modelling and solving of the inverse task based on Tikhonov's regularization method. Special attention is devoted to the line shape measurements for the optically thin light sources filled with Hg, Ar, Xe, Kr for their use in high precision analysers for detection of heavy metals and benzene.

HUMAN SMUGGLING AND IRREGULAR IMMIGRATION IN THE EU: FROM COMPLICITY TO EXPLOITATION?

2016

The paper provides a comparative analysis of the EU and the UN to the fight against smuggling. The two approaches are considerably different; and, since the one in the UN documents is more respectful of the smuggled migrants' rights, the paper suggests that a similar approach should also be embraced by the EU documents.

Accounting for soil parameter uncertainty in a physically based and distributed approach for rainfall-triggered landslides

2015

In this study we propose a probabilistic approach for coupled distributed hydrological-hillslope stability models that accounts for soil parameters uncertainty at basin scale. The geotechnical and soil retention curve parameters are treated as random variables across the basin and theoretical probability distributions of the Factor of Safety (FS) are estimated. The derived distributions are used to obtain the spatio-temporal dynamics of probability of failure, in terms of parameters uncertainty, conditioned to soil moisture dynamics. The framework has been implemented in the tRIBS-VEGGIE (Triangulated Irregular Network (TIN)-based Real-time Integrated Basin Simulator-VEGetation Generator fo…
