A compact cis-regulatory module defines the exclusive expression of the Hbox12 homeobox-containing gene in the presumptive aboral ectoderm
2009
In the sea urchin embryo, a number of genes encoding transcription factors display territorial restricted expression. Among these, the zygotic Hbox12 homeobox gene is transiently transcribed in a limited number of cells of the animal-lateral half of the early Paracentrotus lividus embryo, whose descendants will constitute part of the ectoderm territory. We have explored the cis-regulatory apparatus of the gene and found that the intergenic region of the tandem Hbox12 repeats drives GFP expression in the presumptive aboral ectoderm and that a 234 bp fragment, defined Aboral Ectoderm Module, accounts for the restricted expression of the transgene. Within this module, a consensus sequence for …
Extending the usefulness of extraembryonic mesenchymal stem cellsin regenerative medicine: expression of novel markers, immunoregulatory molecules, a…
2010
Mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) are considered promising tools in regenerative medicine applications. Even if they are already applied clinically, their extended characterization is being increasingly viewed as a needed feature, in order to avoid contrasting results when translating “in vitro” experiments to “in vivo” approaches. We recently demonstrated in human MSC isolated from the umbilical cord matrix (HEMSC) the expression of novel markers indicative of their stemness, as well as differentiative and immune properties [1]. HEMSC were cultured and subject to multiple molecular and morphological analyses to determine the expression of markers of interest. Undifferentiated HEMSC expressed im…
Infrastructure, Tariff and Legal Action: How to Achieve a Climate-Friendly Transport System
2011
Transportation absorbs about 70% of oil consumption in EU countries. The fuels that burn in the field of transport are composed of 96% of oil. Energy efficiency of road and air traffic must also be improved. But transport environmental impacts reductions should be made necessarily through a transfer of traffic from the car, lorries and aircraft to train, ship, and non motorized two-wheelers into the EU cities. In fact the former are large producers of greenhouse gases, while the latter are more environmentally friendly means of transport in climate. Reaching an annual increase of 1% of the modal split in favour of more sustainable means of transport on the environment must be set as a goal …
"A KNOWLEDGE-BASED EXPERT SYSTEM IN BIOINFORMATICS: AN APPLICATION TO REVERSE ENGINEERING GENE REGULATORY NETWORK"
2011
The huge amount of biological data has spread the development of plenty of bionformatics tools, databases and web services. In order to face a computational biology problem, there not exist only a way, but different methodologies and strategies, with their own pros and cons, can be applied. In this PhD thesis I present a knowledge-based expert system that aims at helping a bionformatics researcher in the choice of the proper strategy and heuristic in order to resolve a bioinformatics issue. The Knowledge Base of the system is structured by means of an ontology and codes the expertise about the application domain. KB is organized into decision-making modules that introduce a set of metareaso…
La semplificazione normativa e il PNRR
2023
The monograph studies the regulatory simplification policy programmed by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, analyzing its elements of novelty compared to policies already undertaken in the country and its relevance in the context of Plan implementation. It then considers the regulatory measures being taken to implement the said policy, questioning whether genuine simplification is being achieved.

MicroRNAs in Colorectal Cancer Drug Resistance: Shooters become Targets

MicroRNAs (MiRNAs) are involved in the regulation of several biological processes such as development, differentiation, metabolism, apoptosis and proliferation. Recently, it has been shown that deregulated expression of miRNAs are present in different human cancers, suggesting a potential role in carcinogenesis [1,2]. Recent evidence suggests that miRNAs may represent potential new therapeutic approaches in patients with dru…
Robustness of dynamic gene regulatory networks in Neisseria
2014
Gene regulatory networks are made of highly tuned, sparse and dynamical operations. We consider the case of the Neisseria meningitidis bacterium, a causative agent of life-threatening infections such as meningitis, and aim to infer a robust net- work of interactions across sixty proteins based on a detailed time course gene expres- sion study. We consider the problem of estimating a sparse dynamic Gaussian graphical model with L1 penalized maximum likelihood under a structured precision matrix. The structure can consist of specific time dynamics, known presence or absence of links in the graphical model or equality constraints on the parameters. The authors developed a new optimization algo…
Principled Governance: Politics to the People
2022
An influential narrative claims that the erosion of the modern nation state is causing a historical shift from «government» to «governance». Society-centred new modes of governance are displacing state-centric tools of government. Shaped by bottom-up pressures, these changes are in the process of engendering a more democratic and functionally differentiated type of agency – the Networked Polity. The paper challenges this narrative. It claims that extant governance networks are merely means for co-opting specific societal actors. For, the societal actors operating within those networks are given much reduced powers than the ones conceded to them in the past by declining neo-corporate arrange…
