The European sTANDEM project for certification in medical English: standards, acceptability and transgression(s)

2014

In the global world of international communication, employers or institutions that wish to determine the language skills of non-native speakers of English usually turn to generalist proficiency tests such as the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or the slightly more business-oriented TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication). These tests enable test takers to certify that they have reached a certain level in skills needed in everyday life and, sometimes, workplace situations, but they do not assess language skills for specific purposes.Aware of this vacuum, a consortium of European teachers/researchers and international experts in the domain of medical English unde…

Activating Character Strengths Through Poetic Encounters in a Foreign Language - A Case Study

The paper brings together two important issues related to effective functioning of foreign/second language learners, that is character strengths (one of the pillars of positive psychology) and the use of literary texts for language learning. Antiochia di Siria di fronte al problema dell’immigrazione. (Lib., Or. 56, 22-23)

2018

In the paragraphs 22-23 of the speech 56, Libanius proposes the expulsion of foreigners from the city of Antioch. The measure, in fact, is not so peremptory, as it contains rather the criterion whereby to separate the good or moderate from the bad or intemperate: having home, wife, children and work is the condition for making a good citizen. Thus emerges a subtle discrimen among the foreigners who constituted the claque, disease of the city, and which therefore deserved to be eradicated away, and the other xenoi fully incorporated into the social and citizen context within which they could safely remain.

Music in foreign language learning

2008

Poster; We are devoted to the study of the physical basis and communicative quality of music introduced in chinese language learning. We show that the subtle frequency variations in a foreign linguage may not be recognised due to the mother's language filtering. Our preliminary results show that coherently introduced musical and linguistic prosodies help the short term acquisition.

Turismo existencial y de masas en París-Tombuctú

2012

1999

Changes in the foreign trade of the countries of the East. The difficult assimilation into Europe. The direction of the trading lines of the post-communist countries has been modified by the political and economical changes of the countries of the East of Europe, the dismantling of the COMECON, as well as by the disintegration of the USSR and the detente in the international relationships. During the forty years that the COMECON was prevailing, that region centred its attention on the USSR, but nowadays the East looiks at the West, concretaly at the European Union and more exactly at Germany. The composition of the imports and exports reveals the marked dependence on Central and Eastern Eur…

Student w roli słuchacza na zajęciach języka polskiego jako obcego

2022

The purpose of this article is to verify what communication roles the learner of Polish as a foreign language plays in improving listening skills (and in which communication systems). The author, referring to the concepts of Michel Rost and Denis McQuail, analyzes teaching tasks and correlated texts present in three selected coursebooks for A2 level. The research shows that the teaching tasks do little to prepare learners for authentic listening in natural communicative contexts: students play little differentiated roles in only two systems. In the author’s view, listening instruction should be consciously and deliberately planned for the sake of authenticity and functionalism in PFL teachi…

NEW EU MEMBER COUNTRIES ARE PHASING OUT LABOR-INTENSIVE ACTIVITIES: AN ECONOMETRIC APPROACH

2012

This paper deals with the process of industrial development that has been unfolding in Central and East-European Countries during the last two decades, with special focus on changes in international specialization induced by successive shifts in comparative advantage. As it was to be expected, these advances have gradually improved the respective countries’ exports structure, the most important mutation residing in the gradual abandoning of subcontracting agreements – mostly confined to assembly-of-imported-inputs – and the expansion of the production of knowledge and human capital-intensive goods and services. European integration has most certainly been acting as a catalyst for this proce…

Internet-based information and foreign direct investment (FDI) location decision making: An information cost perspective

2012

Published version of an article in the journal: African Journal of Business Management. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.5897/AJBM11.1203 Open Access Information and communication technology (ICT) is considered to play an important role to reduce information cost for potential foreign investors. While a growing body of literature has suggested such connections, conceptual clarity is yet to be achieved. This study introduces a conceptual framework based on the Information-theoretic approach and transaction cost perspective to explore how ICT may reduce information cost. To illustrate our proposed framework, we apply it to examine the role of Internet-based informati…
