Development of a Fractional PI controller in an FPGA environment for a Robust High-Performance PMSM Electrical Drive

2021

This paper proposes the application of a Fractional Order PI (FOPI) in the speed loop of a high performance PMSM drive to obtain both speed tracking and load rejection performance with a 1-DOF Proportional Integral (PI) controller and 2-DOF Integral Proportional (IP) controller. Hardware validation was implemented in Field Programmable Gate Array on the LabVIEW environment, based on the National Instruments System-on-Module sbRIO-9651 with Xilinx Zynq-7020. Simulation and experimental results are presented to comparing the performance of a PI, IP and FOPI controllers in the speed loop of a Field Oriented Control (FOC) of a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM).

2014

A feedback control method based on an extended state observer (ESO) method is implemented to vibration reduction in a typical semiactive suspension (SAS) system using a magnetorheological (MR) damper as actuator. By considering the dynamic equations of the SAS system and the MR damper model, an active disturbance rejection control (ADRC) is designed based on the ESO. Numerical simulation and real-time experiments are carried out with similar vibration disturbances. Both the simulation and experimental results illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed controller in vibration suppression for a SAS system.

Exact simulation of diffusion first exit times: algorithm acceleration

2020

In order to describe or estimate different quantities related to a specific random variable, it is of prime interest to numerically generate such a variate. In specific situations, the exact generation of random variables might be either momentarily unavailable or too expensive in terms of computation time. It therefore needs to be replaced by an approximation procedure. As was previously the case, the ambitious exact simulation of exit times for diffusion processes was unreachable though it concerns many applications in different fields like mathematical finance, neuroscience or reliability. The usual way to describe exit times was to use discretization schemes, that are of course approxim…

Nonlinear Feedback Control and Stability Analysis of a Proof-of-Work Blockchain

2017

In this paper a novel feedback controller and stability analysis of a blockchain implementation is developed by using a control engineering perspective. The controller output equals the difficulty adjustment in the mining process while the feedback variable is the average block time over a certain time period. The computational power (hash rate) of the miners is considered a disturbance in the model. The developed controller is tested against a simulation model with constant disturbance, step and ramp responses as well as with a high-frequency sinusoidal disturbance. Stability and a fast response is demonstrated in all these cases with a controller which adjusts it's output at every new blo…

Ecological and evolutionary consequences of selective interspecific information use

2023

Recent work has shown that animals frequently use social information from individuals of their own species as well as from other species; however, the ecological and evolutionary consequences of this social information use remain poorly understood. Additionally, information users may be selective in their social information use, deciding from whom and how to use information, but this has been overlooked in an interspecific context. In particular, the intentional decision to reject a behaviour observed via social information has received less attention, although recent work has indicated its presence in various taxa. Based on existing literature, we explore in which circumstances selective i…

Xenograft rejection in marine sponges. Isolation and purification of an inhibitory aggregation factor from Geodia cydonium.

1981

In sponges there exists a graft rejection mechanism in which an inhibitory aggregation factor is involved. The inhibitory aggregation factor has been isolated from a culture medium containing dissociated cells of the sponge Geodia cydonium. Using ion-exchange and gel fractionation the factor was purified and shown to be electrophoretically pure. The factor has a molecular weight of 27000 and was characterized as a glycoprotein. The activity of the inhibitory aggregation factor was not affected by heat treatment, but treatment with trichloroacetic acid resulted in the irreversible loss of activity. The inhibitory aggregation factor affects the aggregation-factor-mediated reaggregation of dis…

"Switch the lights off” : Employee argumentation on acceptance or rejection of corporate environmentalism in a financial corporation

2013

This study explores the rhetorical strategies used by employees in a financial corporation to reject or accept corporate environmentalism among corporate responsibilities. The study is theoretically based on rhetoric and on prior research on acceptance or rejection of corporate environmentalism among other corporate responsibilities in an organization. A qualitative study, based on face-to-face interviews was conducted among 30 employees in a Finnish financial corporation. The study shows that employees reject corporate environmentalism based on value priorities and perception of little or no environmental impacts. They accept corporate environmentalism among other responsibilities based on…

Strawberries and Cream: The Relationship Between Food Rejection and Thematic Knowledge of Food in Young Children

2021

Establishing healthy dietary habits in childhood is crucial in preventing long-term repercussions, as a lack of dietary variety in childhood leads to enduring impacts on both physical and cognitive health. Poor conceptual knowledge about food has recently been shown to be a driving factor of food rejection. The majority of studies that have investigated the development of food knowledge along with food rejection have mainly focused on one subtype of conceptual knowledge about food, namely taxonomic categories (e.g., vegetables or meat). However, taxonomic categorization is not the only way to understand the food domain. We also heavily rely on other conceptual structures, namely thematic as…

Tolerance through Education: How Tolerogenic Dendritic Cells Shape Immunity

2017

Dendritic cells (DCs) are central players in the initiation and control of responses, regulating the balance between tolerance and immunity. Tolerogenic DCs are essential in the maintenance of central and peripheral tolerance by induction of clonal T cell deletion and T cell anergy, inhibition of memory and effector T cell responses, and generation and activation of regulatory T cells. Therefore, tolerogenic DCs are promising candidates for specific cellular therapy of allergic and autoimmune diseases and for treatment of transplant rejection. Studies performed in rodents have demonstrated the efficacy and feasibility of tolerogenic DCs for tolerance induction in various inflammatory diseas…
