Survival in patients with primary liver cancer, gallbladder and extrahepatic biliary tract cancer and pancreatic cancer in Europe 1999- 2007: Results…

2015

Abstract Background The EUROCARE study collects and analyses survival data from population-based cancer registries (CRs) in Europe in order to provide data on between-country differences in survival and time trends in survival. Methods This study analyses data on liver cancer, gallbladder and extrahepatic biliary tract cancers (“biliary tract cancers”), and pancreatic cancer diagnosed in 2000–2007 from 88 CRs in 29 countries. Relative survival (RS) was estimated overall, by region, sex, age and period of diagnosis using the complete approach. Time trends in 5-year RS over 1999–2007 were also analysed using the period approach. Results The prognosis of the studied cancers was poor. Age-stand…

Urinary tract cancer survival in Europe 1999-2007: Results of the population-based study EUROCARE-5

2015

Abstract Background This work presents relative survival estimates regarding urinary tract tumours among adult patients (age ⩾ 15 years) diagnosed in Europe. It reports on survival estimates of cases diagnosed in 2000–2007, and on survival time trends from 1999–2001 to 2005–2007. Methods Data on 677,340 adult urinary tract tumour patients, (429,154 cases of invasive and non-invasive bladder and 248,186 cases of invasive kidney cancers) diagnosed between 2000 and 2007 were provided by 86 population-based cancer registries from 29 European countries. The complete approach was used to estimate survival in 2000–2007; the period approach was used to estimate survival over time. Results The age-s…

Survival in patients with acute myeloblastic leukemia in Germany and the United States: Major differences in survival in young adults

2016

Previous epidemiologic studies on AML have been limited by the rarity of the disease. Here, we present population level data on survival of patients with AML in Germany and the United States (US). Data were extracted from 11 population-based cancer registries in Germany and the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER13) database in the US. Patients diagnosed with AML in 1997-2011 were included. Period analysis was used to estimate 5-year relative survival (RS) and trends in survival in the early 21st century. Overall 5-year age-adjusted RS for patients with AML in 2007-2011 was greater in Germany than in the US at 22.8% and 18.8%, respectively. Five-year RS was higher in Germany t…

Recent cancer survival in Germany: An analysis of common and less common cancers

2014

The monitoring of cancer survival by population-based cancer registries is a prerequisite to evaluate the current quality of cancer care. Our study provides 1-, 5- and 10-year relative survival as well as 5-year relative survival conditional on 1-year survival estimates and recent survival trends for Germany using data from 11 population-based cancer registries, covering around one-third of the German population. Period analysis was used to estimate relative survival for 24 common and 11 less common cancer sites for the period 2007-2010. The German and the United States survival estimates were compared using the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results 13 database. Trends in cancer surviv…

A French prospective pilot study for identifying dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase (DPD) deficiency in breast cancer patients (pts) receiving capecitab…

2013

e13519 Background: For fluoropyrimidines, and especially cap, Health Authorities point out that DPD deficiency confers a significant risk of major toxicity (tox). Identification of at-risk pts is thus relevant. This multicentric prospective study of the French GPCO group (Groupe de Pharmacologie Clinique Oncologique, Unicancer) evaluated the sensitivity, specificity and predictive values of DPD phenotyping and genotyping for predicting severe cap-related tox in metastatic breast cancer pts. Methods: 303 pts were included (15 institutions), 88% received cap as monotherapy, 28% were treated as first line (mean dose at 1st cycle 1957 mg/m2/d). Pre-treatment dihydrouracil (UH2) and uracil (U) …

Population-based study of breast cancer in older women: prognostic factors of relative survival and predictors of treatment

2012

Abstract Background A large proportion of women with breast cancer (BC) are elderly. However, there is a lack of information regarding BC prognostic factors and care in this population. The aims of this study were to assess the prognostic factors of relative survival (RS) among women with BC aged ≥ 75 years old and to identify the predictive factors of treatments administered to this population. Methods A population-based study was performed using data from the Cote d’Or breast and gynaecological cancer registry. Women aged 75 years and older with primary invasive BC and resident in Cote d’Or at the time of diagnosis made between January 1998 and December 2008 were retrospectively selected.…

Effect of low amount of nanosilica on dielectric properties of polypropylene

2010

This paper presents the results of the dielectric properties measurements conducted on Silica-Polypropylene (PP) nanocomposites. According to prior investigations by the authors silica nanoparticles have improved the performance of the dielectric material considering capacitor applications. Especially breakdown strengths with ac and dc voltages and resistance against surface degradation have increased. The relative permittivity and dielectric losses have also been comparable to reference PP. In this paper the results of the dielectric measurements conducted on composites with 1-2 wt-% silica are compared with reference PP. Silica dispersion in PP was confirmed with transmission electron mic…

Comparative responses of ‘Gala’ and ‘Fuji’ apple trees to deficit irrigation: Placement versus volume effects

2012

Aims: Climate, soil water potential (SWP), leaf relative water content (RWC), stomatal conductance (gs), fruit and shoot growth, and carbohydrate levels were monitored during the 2008 and 2009 growing seasons to study the responses of 'Gala' and 'Fuji' apple trees to irrigation placement or volume. Methods: Three irrigation treatments were imposed, conventional irrigation (CI), partial root-zone drying (PRD, 50% of CI water on one side of the root-zone, which was alternated periodically), and continuous deficit irrigation (DI, 50% of CI water on both sides of the root-zone). Results: After each irrigation season, DI generated twice the soil water deficit (SWDint) than PRD (average of dry an…

Analysis of Organic Aerosols Using a Micro-Orifice Volatilization Impactor Coupled to an Atmospheric-Pressure Chemical Ionization Mass Spectrometer

2014

We present the development and characterization of a combination of a micro-orifice volatilization impactor (MOVI) and an ion trap mass spectrometer (IT/MS) with an atmospheric-pressure chemical ionization (APCI) source. The MOVI is a multi-jet impactor with 100 nozzles, allowing the collection of aerosol particles by inertial impaction on a deposition plate. The pressure drop behind the nozzles is approximately 5%, resulting in a pressure of 96 kPa on the collection surface for ambient pressures of 101.3 kPa. The cut-point diameter (diameter of 50% collection efficiency) is at 0.13 μm for a sampling flow rate of 10 L min–1. After the collection step, aerosol particles are evaporated by he…

Physical activity and risk of atrial fibrillation in the general population : meta-analysis of 23 cohort studies involving about 2 million participan…

2021

Regular physical activity is well established to be associated with reduced risk of cardiovascular disease outcomes. Whether physical activity is associated with the future risk of atrial fibrillation (AF) remains a controversy. Using a systematic review and meta-analysis of published observational cohort studies in general populations with at least one-year of follow-up, we aimed to evaluate the association between regular physical activity and the risk of AF. Relevant studies were sought from inception until October 2020 in MEDLINE, Embase, Web of Science, and manual search of relevant articles. Extracted relative risks (RRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the maximum versus the …
