Survival of 86,690 patients with thyroid cancer: A population-based study in 29 European countries from EUROCARE-5

2017

Background: Incidence rates of thyroid cancer (TC) increased in several countries during the last 30 years, while mortality rates remained unchanged, raising important questions for treatment and follow-up of TC patients. This study updates population-based estimates of relative survival (RS) after TC diagnosis in Europe by sex, country, age, period and histology. Methods: Data from 87 cancer registries in 29 countries were extracted from the EUROCARE-5 dataset. One-and 5-year RS were estimated using the cohort approach for 86,690 adult TC patients diagnosed in 2000-2007 and followed-up to 12/31/2008. RS trends in 1999-2007 and 10-year RS in 2005-2007 were estimated using the period approach…

Bleeding symptoms at disease presentation and prediction of ensuing bleeding in inherited FVII deficiency.

2012

SummaryIndividuals with inherited factor VII (FVII) deficiency display bleeding phenotypes ranging from mild to severe, with 30% of patients having always been asymptomatic (non-bleeding). In 626 FVII-deficient individuals, by analysing data from the International Factor VII (IF7) Registry and the Seven Treatment Evaluation Registry (STER), we determined whether bleeding type at disease presentation and FVII coagulant activity (FVIIc) predict ensuing bleeds. At disease presentation/diagnosis, 272 (43.5%) individuals were non-bleeding, 277 (44.2%) had minor bleeds, and 77 (12.3%) had major bleeds. During a median nine-year index period (IP) observation, 87.9% of non-bleeding individuals at p…

Conceptualization of relative size by honeybees

2014

The ability to process visual information using relational rules allows for decisions independent of the specific physical attributes of individual stimuli. Until recently, the manipulation of relational concepts was considered as a prerogative of large mammalian brains. Here we show that individual free flying honeybees can learn to use size relationship rules to choose either the larger or smaller stimulus as the correct solution in a given context, and subsequently apply the learnt rule to novel colors and shapes providing that there is sufficient input to the long wavelength (green) photoreceptor channel. Our results add a novel, size-based conceptual rule to the set of relational conce…

Median vs. Mean in Poverty Alleviation

2011

When evaluating poverty, the relative poverty line may be taken as a percentage of either normalized median or normalized mean income. It is proved that, for any family of non-intersecting Lorenz curves, when the poverty line is set relative to the normalized median income, reducing poverty become less costly in proportion to the total income when inequality is great and increasing; a counter-example proves that such a change may be associated with greater poverty. However, when the poverty line is set relative to the normalized mean income, the relative cost of poverty alleviation always increases with inequality and poverty, as expected. One concludes that the poverty line should be taken…

Measuring investor sentiment in the stock market

2011

Recently, investor sentiment measures have become one of the more widely examined areas in behavioral finance. A number of measures have been developed in the literature without having been fully validated, and therefore leaving in question which measure should be used for empirical exploration. The purpose of this study is to examine the relative performance of a number of popular measures in predicting stock returns and to test the relative efficacy of a hybrid approach. Using a panel of investor sentiment measures, we develop a new measure of sentiment which combines direct and indirect sentiment measures. Our results show that our composite sentiment index affects the returns of stocks …

Recent Developments in Heterogeneous Photoreactor Modelling

1991

A selection of recently proposed heterogeneous photoreactors is presented. In some cases efforts have been made for the formulation of models able to describe the photoreactor behaviour with regard to the absorption of radiation. Examples of proposals of both novel photoreactor and models are critically reviewed.

Moderne Therapie bei akutem Koronarsyndrom

2002

Inhibition of platelet aggregation with aspirin and anticoagulation with unfractionated heparin can be considered the gold standard treatment of patients with acute coronary syndromes. Replacement of unfractionated heparins by low-molecular weight heparins seem to further improve the cardiovascular risk. Additional treatment with glycoprotein IIb/IIIa receptor blockers led to a further reduction of the clinical event rate, especially in patients undergoing coronary interventions during an acute coronary syndrome (more than 30% relative risk reduction). However, the latter substances did only lead to marginal improvements in the setting of a conservative stabilization of patients with acute …

A cardiovascular educational intervention for primary care professionals in Spain: positive impact in a quasi-experimental study

2015

Background Routine general practice data collection can help identify patients at risk of cardiovascular disease. Aim To determine whether a training programme for primary care professionals improves the recording of cardiovascular disease risk factors in electronic health records. Design and setting A quasi-experimental study without random assignment of professionals. This was an educational intervention study, consisting of an online-classroom 1-year training programme, and carried out in the Valencian community in Spain. Method The prevalence rates of recording of cardiovascular factors (recorded every 6 months over a 4-year period) were compared between intervention and control group. …

Troponin I and cardiovascular risk prediction in the general population: the BiomarCaRE consortium

2016

AIMS: Our aims were to evaluate the distribution of troponin I concentrations in population cohorts across Europe, to characterize the association with cardiovascular outcomes, to determine the predictive value beyond the variables used in the ESC SCORE, to test a potentially clinically relevant cut-off value, and to evaluate the improved eligibility for statin therapy based on elevated troponin I concentrations retrospectively.METHODS AND RESULTS: Based on the Biomarkers for Cardiovascular Risk Assessment in Europe (BiomarCaRE) project, we analysed individual level data from 10 prospective population-based studies including 74 738 participants. We investigated the value of adding troponin …
