Motor nerve conduction along the entire length of ulnar and tibialis posterior nerves was studied in 30 uraemic patients and in 20 control subjects. The M and F latencies, MNCV (between the stimulus sites), FWCV (between the spinal cord and the stimulus sites) and F-ratio (conduction time ratio of proximal to distal segment) were assessed to evaluate the conduction in the proximal versus the distal nerve segment. In the uraemic patients, the slowing of nerve conduction involved both segments of the tested nerves to the same extent. Few studies have addressed the problem of sleep disturbances in patients with early-stage chronic kidney disease (CKD). A total of 220 patients newly diagnosed with CKD and 220 patients newly diagnosed with chronic hepatitis C were studied within 1 month from the diagnosis. They were evaluated by using the Charlson Comorbidity Index, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and the Beck Depression Inventory. Patients with CKD were followed up for 4 years. Sleep disturbances affected 59.5% of patients with chronic hepatitis C and 84.6% of patients with CKD. Sleeping disorders that were severe and peculiar in early CKD improved significantly over time. We investigated the influence of thymopentin as an adjuvant for hepatitis B vaccination on in vitro monocyte and T cell function and in vivo antibody response in a prospective, placebo-controlled double-blind trial in 20 low- and nonresponders to hepatitis B vaccination on chronic hemodialysis. 50 mg thymopentin was given subcutaneously twice per week for 3 weeks, followed by 1 intramuscular injection of 40 micrograms HB-Vax and 3 subsequent injections of thymopentin. After 1 month, the patients were boostered with 40 micrograms HB-Vax. There was no significant difference in T cell and monocyte function after administration of thymopentin, as determined in vitro. We report a case of anuria in a 42-year-old female kidney transplant patient that occurred secondary to extrinsic compression from a large kidney being placed extraperitoneally in a small iliac fossa. Prompt reexploration in the immediate postoperative period resulted in salvage of the graft with restoration of kidney function. The abdominal wall was reconstructed using prosthetic mesh, which decreased the compartment pressure within the iliac fossa sufficiently to allow the renal vein patency and the kidney perfusion. After infusion of 500 ml of 6% hydroxyethyl starch into fifty-four patients an increase of serum amylase was observed which in fifty-one cases exceeded the upper limit of normal (190 U/l). In most cases serum amylase reached twice the basal value. Renal function influenced the duration of the increase in serum amylase, but not the maximum increase (201+/-15 U/l; mean+/-SEM). In patients with advanced renal failure (glomerular filtration rate (GFR) = 2-10 ml/min) serum amylase was still markedly elevated after 72 h (298+/-24 U/l; mean+/-SEM). The aim of the present study was to determine the frequency and degree of elevated serum levels of Total Amylase (TA), Pancreatic Amylase (PA), and Lipase (L) activity in patients with chronic renal failure (CRF) on conservative therapy; CRF on periodical hemodialysis (HD); in renal transplant (RT) and in a control Group (C). Mean values were significantly higher in all groups than Group C for TA (p < 0.005), PA (p < 0.0001) and L (p < 0.0001). SUMMARY: Aim: Parathyroid hormone secretion is mainly influenced by hypocalcaemia, hyperphosphataemia and vitamin D deficiency. However, previous in vitro and in vivo studies showed that endothelin-1 can influence parathyroid hormone secretion. This study was aimed at evaluating this relationship in vivo in uraemic patients. Methods: Parathyroid hormone and endothelin-1 plasma concentrations were measured in 67 haemodialysed patients.
