Pharmacological prevention of eNOS uncoupling.
2013
Under physiological conditions, nitric oxide (NO) is produced in the vasculature mainly by the endothelial NO synthase (eNOS). This endothelium-derived NO is a protective molecule with antihypertensive, antithrombotic and anti-atherosclerotic properties. Cardiovascular risk factors such as hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, cigarette smoking and diabetes mellitus induce oxidative stress mostly by stimulation of the NADPH oxidase. Overproduction of reactive oxygen species leads to oxidation of tetrahydrobiopterin (BH4), the essential cofactor of eNOS. In BH4 deficiency, oxygen reduction uncouples from NO synthesis, thereby converting eNOS to a superoxide- producing enzyme. Consequently, NO …

Central obesity and hypertension: Pathophysiologic role of renal haemodynamics and function
1995
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the role of alterations in renal haemodynamics and function and in plasma renin activity on obesity-induced hypertension. DESIGN: Renal haemodynamics and function, salt-regulating hormones and structural cardiac parameters were evaluated in 20 lean normotensives and in 64 obese subjects with central or peripheral fat distribution, 43 of them were normotensives and 21 of them were hypertensives. Obesity and central fat distribution were defined according to sex-specific 85th percentile respectively of Body Mass Index (BMI) and Waist to Hip Ratio (WHR). MEASUREMENTS: Serum immunoreactive insulin (IRI), plasma renin activity (PRA), plasma aldosterone (PA), microalbumi…

ChemInform Abstract: Two New Sesquiterpene Derivatives from the Tunisian Endemic Ferula tunetana Pom.
2010
A new sesquiterpene ester, tunetanin A (1), a new sesquiterpene coumarin, tunetacoumarin A (2), together with eight known compounds, i.e., coladin (3), coladonin (4), isosmarcandin (5), 13-hydroxyfeselol (6), umbelliprenin (7) propiophenone (8), beta-sitosterol (9), and stigmasterol (10), were isolated from the roots of Ferula tunetana. Their structures were elucidated on the basis of extensive spectroscopic methods, including 1D- and 2D-NMR experiments and MS analysis, as well as by comparison with published data. The cytotoxicity of compounds 1-7 towards two human colon cancer cell lines, HT-29 and HCT 116, was evaluated. Compounds 3, 4, and 6 showed weak cytotoxic activities.

Abstract Background and Aims Hyperkalemia (HK) is a potentially life-threatening condition, in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and congestive heart failure (CHF). The majority of patients affected with CKD or CHF, must be treated with inhibitors of renin angiotensin aldosterone system (RAASi) and mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists (MRAs). However, the treatments previously mentioned, increase the risk of HK episodes, which is the main cause of RAASi and MRAs downtitration or discontinuation, representing an undesirable clinical scenario, given that the patients are at high risk of be deprived of their nephroprotective effect and cardio-renal benefits The aim of the study is: …
Er supermosjonisme sunt? : kartlegging av helsevariabler blant mannlige langdistanseløpere og syklister.
2016
Masteroppgave folkehelsevitenskap - Universitetet i Agder 2016 Introduction: Physical activity is well documented as an important factor for good health. There are however some people who train far beyond the national recommendations for 6 physical activity combined with work and family life. The research done on «high volume exercisers» is limited, specially the health variables. Objective: The purpose with this master paper is to investigate if high volume exercise is healthy. By identifying different health variable it may point to how the body responds to high training volume. Method: 41 male high volume exercises (18 to 50 years) were included in this cross-sectional study. The compila…

Effects of Including Sprints in One Weekly Low-Intensity Training Session During the Transition Period of Elite Cyclists
2020
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of including 30-s sprints in one weekly low-intensity training (LIT) session during a 3-week transition period in elite cyclists. Sixteen male elite cyclists (maximal oxygen uptake, VO2max: 72 ± 5 ml·kg−1·min−1) reduced their training load by ~60% for 3 weeks from the end of competitive season and performed only LIT or included 30-s sprints (SPR) in one weekly LIT-session. Performance and physiological capacities were evaluated during a prolonged (~2.5 h) test-session, including a strength test, a submaximal blood lactate profile test, an incremental test to exhaustion to determine VO2max, 1 h continuous cycling including four maximal…
Is It Possible to Predict an Athlete’s Behavior? The Use of Polar Coordinates to Identify Key Patterns in Taekwondo
2019
Elite sport psychologists help athletes develop planned competition strategies from a technical-tactical perspective, through the observation and analysis of previous performances. The aim of this study was to analyze the behavioral patterns used to score points in the 2012 London Olympic Games, by using a mixed observational methodology through a polar coordinate analysis. This analysis is a representation made into four quadrants of the relationships found between focal behavior [i.e., giving score points, (SC)] and conditioned behaviors considered as key factors in taekwondo, occurring before and after the focal behavior (i.e., retrospective/prospective behavior as indicated for each qua…
