Abstract BACKGROUND: Our aim was to identify risk factors for the development of neonatal Candida liver abscess and to find useful information to better manage this potentially fatal complication. METHODS: A computerized search was conducted using PubMed. Overall, three articles describing the history of seven infants were finally considered. Hepatic extraction of organic nitrates, including that of isosorbide dinitrate (ISDN), has been thought to be nearly complete in man but has never been directly measured. We examined the time course of plasma ISDN and metabolite concentrations in arterial and hepatic venous blood in four cardiac patients receiving an intravenous ISDN infusion. Apparent hepatic extraction of ISDN was high (90%) at the beginning of infusion but fell to about 44% 1 hr after termination of infusion. Combined medical and mechanical recanalization in acute myocardial infarction

A technique of combined medical and mechanical recanalization was employed in 96 patients with acute transmural myocardial infarction. The mean time between onset of symptoms and admission to hospital was 170 +/- 65 min (X +/- SD). After 10 +/- 16 min, 250,000 U streptokinase was administered intravenously for 20 min. Intracoronary thrombolysis was commenced within 38 +/- 14 min. First coronary angiograms demonstrated reperfusion, an open vessel in 25/96 patients (26%). In 15/71 patients (21%) reperfusion occurred during thrombolysis therapy, before mechanical recanalization could be performed. Flow in meandering bends is characterized by the formation of a large cross-sectional central-region circulation cell. The width-to-depth ratio is one of the most important parameters affecting the entity of the cross-circulation motion. In steep outside bends, beside the central-region cell, a counter-rotating circulation cell often forms in the upper part of the outer-bank.
