Challenging Dogma: Thresholds for Genotoxic Carcinogens? The Case of Vinyl Acetate

2002

Although many questions remain unanswered, the general principle of the sequence of events leading to cancer after exposure to genotoxic carcinogens has become increasingly clear. This helps to understand the parameters that influence the shape of the dose-effect curve for carcinogenesis, including metabolic activation and inactivation of carcinogens, DNA repair, cell cycle control, apoptosis, and control by the immune system. A linear dose-response relationship with no observable threshold seems to be a conservative but adequate description for the carcinogenic activity of many genotoxic carcinogens, such as aflatoxin B1, the tobacco-specific nitrosoketone NNK, and probably N,N-diethylnit…

Perinatal stem cells revisited: directions and indications at the crossroads between tissue regeneration and repair.

2013

Perinatal stem cells research attracted great interest worldwide in recent years. Foetus-associated tissues contain various populations of stem cells, most of which are comprised within the category of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). This special issue collects both reviews and original reports on all the perinatal stem cell types which are currently under investigation. These cells have multiple promising features: differentiative capacity towards mature cell types of all the three germ layers, hypoimmunogenicity in vitro and in vivo, ease of sourcing, ex vivo culture and stor- age. In particular, immune modulation is viewed as a prom- ising feature of many MSCs populations, since these cel…

Expression of the human XPB/ERCC-3 excision repair gene-homolog in the sponge Geodia cydonium after exposure to ultraviolet radiation.

1998

Abstract The marine demosponge Geodia cydonium encodes a gene, termed GCXPB , which displays 62% identity to the human XPB/ERCC-3 gene that specifically corrects the repair defect in xeroderma pigmentosum and in Cockayne's syndrome. The cDNA was isolated and characterized the deduced aa sequence, XPB_GEOCY, with the calculated size of 91,541 Da comprises the characteristic domains found in the related helicases. Phylogenetic tree analysis revealed that the sponge sequence is grouped to the metazoan related XPB/ERCC-3 polypeptides. Northern Blot analyses have been performed with sponge samples collected at different depths, thus exposed to different intensities of UV sunlight in the field. T…

Polymorphisms in DNA repair genes modulate survival in cisplatin/gemcitabine-treated non-small-cell lung cancer patients.

2006

Abstract Background: Impaired DNA repair capacity may favorably affect survival in cisplatin/gemcitabine-treated non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients. We investigated the association of survival with genetic polymorphisms in X-ray repair cross-complementing group 1 and group 3 (XRCC3), xeroderma pigmentosum group D (XPD), excision repair cross-complementing group 1, ligase IV, ribonucleotide reductase, TP53, cyclooxygenase-2, interleukin-6, peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ, epidermal growth factor, methylene-tetra-hydrofolate reductase and methionine synthase. Patients and methods: One hundred and thirty-five stage IV or IIIB (with malignant pleural effusion) NSCLC patien…

New Decision-making Tools for sustainable Weed Control

2021

2013

This study is one part of a program of research with regard to the repair of composite structure with extern bonded-patches. The principal objectives of this program are, on one side, the identification of all the factors susceptible to influence the long-term performance of this type of repair, on the other, to determine the extent to which the use of such assemblage can be proved to be an optimal solution. The conception of such a system needs essentially the development of a tool of simulation and of robust prediction because various mechanisms of damage can take place in a very complex way and the final fracture of the system arise from the propagation of damage zones. This study consis…

THE POSTERIOR APPROACH IN THE REPAIR OF POPLITEAL ARTERY ANEURYSMS: A TWO CENTER EXPERIENCE

2010

Objective: Popliteal artery aneurysms (PAA) are most frequent among peripheral aneurysms. The most commonly performed surgical repair is proximal and distal ligation with a saphenous vein bypass. We aim to report the early and mid-term outcome of surgical repair of popliteal artery aneurysms via a posterior approach. Methods: A retrospective review of consecutive patients who underwent surgical PAA repair in two vascular surgery units between 1998 and 2009 was performed. Within this group, the posterior approach was used in 28 repairs in 26 patients (25 men). All patients had an ultrasound examination. Eighteen patients underwent conventional angiography while CT angiography with 3-D recons…

Chimney and Periscope Grafts Observed Over 2 Years After Their Use to Revascularize 169 Renovisceral Branches in 77 Patients With Complex Aortic Aneu…

2013

Purpose: To evaluate the performance of periscope and/or chimney grafts (CPGs) in the endovascular treatment of pararenal or thoracoabdominal aneurysms using off-the-shelf devices. Methods: Between February 2002 and August 2012, 77 consecutive patients (62 men; mean age 7369 years) suffering from pararenal aortic (n¼55), thoracoabdominal (n¼16), or arch to visceral artery aneurysms (n¼6) were treated with aortic stent-graft implantation requiring chimney and/or periscope grafts to maintain side branch perfusion. CPGs were planned in advance and were not used as bailout. A standardized follow-up protocol including computed tomographic angiography, laboratory testing, and clinical examination…
