Predicting antitrichomonal activity: A computational screening using atom-based bilinear indices and experimental proofs
2006
Existing Trichomonas vaginalis therapies are out of reach for most trichomoniasis people in developing countries and, where available, they are limited by their toxicity (mainly in pregnant women) and their cost. New antitrichomonal agents are needed to combat emerging metronidazole-resistant trichomoniasis and reduce the side effects associated with currently available drugs. Toward this end, atom-based bilinear indices, a new TOMOCOMD-CARDD molecular descriptor, and linear discriminant analysis (LDA) were used to discover novel, potent, and non-toxic lead trichomonacidal chemicals. Two discriminant functions were obtained with the use of non-stochastic and stochastic atom-type bilinear in…
Dragon method for finding novel tyrosinase inhibitors: Biosilico identification and experimental in vitro assays
2006
QSAR (quantitative structure-activity relationship) studies of tyrosinase inhibitors employing Dragon descriptors and linear discriminant analysis (LDA) are presented here. A data set of 653 compounds, 245 with tyrosinase inhibitory activity and 408 having other clinical uses were used. The active data set was processed by k-means cluster analysis in order to design training and prediction series. Seven LDA-based QSAR models were obtained. The discriminant functions applied showed a globally good classification of 99.79% for the best model Class=-96.067+1.988 x 10(2)X0Av +9 1.907 BIC3 + 6.853 CIC1 in the training set. External validation processes to assess the robustness and predictive pow…
Cross-cultural adaptation and validation of the French version of the Knee injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS) in knee osteoarthritis pati…
2008
Udgivelsesdato: 2008-Apr OBJECTIVE: To adapt the Knee injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS) into French and to evaluate the psychometric properties of this new version. METHODS: The French version of the KOOS was developed according to cross-cultural guidelines by using the "translation-back translation" method to ensure content validity. KOOS data were then obtained in patients with symptomatic knee osteoarthritis (OA). The translated questionnaire was evaluated in two knee OA population groups, one with no indication for joint replacement (medicine), and the other waiting for joint replacement (surgery). The psychometric properties evaluated were feasibility: percentage of respon…
Psychometric properties, validity and insights of the School Bullying Questionnaire (CIE-A) in secondary schools of the Valencian Community (Spain)
2021
Besides its several threats to health, welfare, social and academic development and performance of kids and teenagers, school bullying remains highlighted as one of the most relevant related challenges for educational, behavioral and legal sciences worldwide. Moreover, the lack of research on the field and the crucial but unattended need to count on psychometrically suitable and valid tools to detect school bullying make difficult understanding its contexts, dynamics and possible solutions. Objective The aim of this study was to thoroughly present in detail the psychometric properties and validity issues of the School Bullying Questionnaire (CIE-A) among secondary students. Methods A region…
Numerical expressions for the computation of coincidence-summing correction factors in γ-ray spectrometry with HPGe detectors
2009
Numerical expressions to compute gamma-gamma and gamma-X(K) coincidence summing corrections were deduced by using a suitable computer program and a matrix representation of a decay scheme. For point sources only full-energy peak and total efficiencies are needed. Alternatively, values of peak-to-total ratio can be introduced. For extended sources, the same expressions can be considered with the introduction of "effective efficiencies". Examples of the use of the expressions for point sources and a particulate filter sample measured with a 60% relative efficiency HPGe detector are reported.
A practical and transferable methodology for dose estimation in irradiated spices, based on thermoluminescence dosimetry
2008
Abstract The thermoluminescence technique is recommended by the European Committee for Standardization for the detection of irradiated food containing silicates as contaminants. In this work, the applicability of the thermoluminescence technique as a quantitative method to assess the original dose in irradiated oregano was studied; the additive-dose method was used, with reirradiation doses up to 600 Gy. The proposed new procedure allows to clearly discriminate irradiated from unirradiated samples, even after one year storage, and it gives an acceptable estimation of the original dose; the overall modified procedure requires only one day to be completed.
Iodine determination in food samples using inductively coupled plasma isotope dilution mass spectrometry.
1998
Two different sample treatment methods are used in connection with inductively coupled plasma isotope dilution mass spectrometry for accurate and precise determinations of iodine traces in food samples. 129I-enriched iodate is applied as a spike compound for the isotope dilution step. Extraction of iodine by tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH) solution at high temperatures in a closed vessel is one of the sample treatment methods. The other one is a complete decomposition of the sample with a mixture of perchloric acid and nitric acid using microwave assistance. By analyzing different certified reference materials (three milk powders with different iodine levels, BCR CRM 63, 150, and 151; …
ESGAR consensus statement on liver MR imaging and clinical use of liver-specific contrast agents
2016
Objectives: To develop a consensus and provide updated recommendations on liver MR imaging and the clinical use of liver-specific contrast agents. Methods: The European Society of Gastrointestinal and Abdominal Radiology (ESGAR) formed a multinational European panel of experts, selected on the basis of a literature review and their leadership in the field of liver MR imaging. A modified Delphi process was adopted to draft a list of statements. Descriptive and Cronbach’s statistics were used to rate levels of agreement and internal reliability of the consensus. Results: Three Delphi rounds were conducted and 76 statements composed on MR technique (n = 17), clinical application of liver-speci…
Left ventricular hypertrophy or storage disease? the incremental value of speckle tracking strain bull's-eye
2017
Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) develops in response to a variety of physical, genetic, and biochemical stimuli and represents the early stage of ventricular remodeling. In patients with LVH, subclinical left ventricular (LV) dysfunction despite normal ejection fraction (EF) may be present before the onset of symptoms, which portends a dismal prognosis. Strain measurement with two-dimensional speckle tracking echocardiography (STE) represents a highly reproducible and accurate alternative to LVEF determination. The present review focuses on current available evidence that supports the incremental value of STE in the diagnostic and prognostic workup of LVH. When assessing the components o…
RepeatsDB in 2021: improved data and extended classification for protein tandem repeat structures
2020
The RepeatsDB database (URL: https://repeatsdb.org/) provides annotations and classification for protein tandem repeat structures from the Protein Data Bank (PDB). Protein tandem repeats are ubiquitous in all branches of the tree of life. The accumulation of solved repeat structures provides new possibilities for classification and detection, but also increasing the need for annotation. Here we present RepeatsDB 3.0, which addresses these challenges and presents an extended classification scheme. The major conceptual change compared to the previous version is the hierarchical classification combining top levels based solely on structural similarity (Class > Topology > Fold) with two new lev…
