Introduction: Situating the Human in Social Robots

2015

Traditionally the social has been considered as a characteristic of human beings, not of inanimate machines. At the same time, each technological device can be considered social born out of a complex process of invention, implementation, distribution and domestication by users (Hirsch and Silverstone 2004; Lasen 2013). Since recent technical developments have made possible rather detailed technical mimicking of human beings and their social features, and incorporating them in silicon chips, there is a pronounced need to understand to what extent the humanness can be implanted in social robots. This is also an occasion to think over and discuss what the human is when considered in this conte…

Higher Education from a Longitudinal and Life Course Perspective

2015

International audience; This symposium brings together scholars from across Canada, Europe, and the United States to explore how longitudinal and life course research can be used to study higher education. Highlighting both qualitative and quantitative research, we will explore aspects of social reproduction, inequality, stratification, wellbeing, and school-to-work transitions.

La prestación de maternidad en los supuestos de gestación subrogada

2018

Surrogate pregnancy, as a technique of assisted reproduction prohibited by Spanish law, raises a number of legal questions than, in certain cases, trascend of the Civil Law. Specifically, it has been discussed about de possibility that de person or persons consigner in the gestation contract substitution have access to the provision for maternity benefit. Recently, the Spanish Supreme Court has responded to this issue in the sense of recognizing the right to the provision for maternity benefit to the father or mother ?in fact?, efecttively, develop own parental powers.

Consumption, Sociology of

2001

The sociology of consumption is as old as sociology itself. Its methodological roots lie in the first surveys, which focused on food consumption and were conducted in the middle of the nineteenth century. The aim was to define the level of minimum wage that was high enough to sustain the reproduction of the labor force. However, the prevailing, genuinely sociological approach to consumption is related strongly to the classical period of sociology, when Marx formulated his theory of commodities and commodity fetishism, when Simmel presented his theories of money, style, and fashion, and when Veblen formulated his trickle-down theory. All of these trains of thought were also present in the mi…

The bureaucratic making of national culture in North-Western Ghana

2014

In this article I explore the making of national culture through bureaucratic routines in the Centre for National Culture in Wa, North-Western Ghana. I focus on an aspect of bureaucracy that is usually left aside: the productivity and creativity of bureaucratic routines. State, nation and culture are not fixed entities, but have to be constantly produced through processes of negotiation and meaning-making and through the continual reproduction of their boundaries and the categories that determine what is to be promoted or preserved. Bureaucratic routines and administrative processes are analysed as practices objectifying and nationalising culture and naturalising the boundaries and categori…

Field distribution ofSorosphaera viticolain commercial vineyards in Germany

2006

In the year 2000, resting spores of a previously undescribed plasmodiophorid were found in roots of Vitis spp. This plasmodiophorid was identified as a member of the genus Sorosphaera Schroeter and described as Sorosphaera viticola Kirchmair, Neuhauser, Huber. To attain information on the field distribution of Sorosphaera viticola, a selective screening was conducted in two commercial vineyards in Germany. A study to determine a correlation of Sorosphaeraviticola infection to grapevine growth was also performed.

Speciation in monogonont rotifers

1997

Monogonont rotifers are cyclical parthenogens livingin limnic habitats with considerable seasonalvariation and often with island-like features. Theoccurrence of bisexual reproduction in these organismsmakes it feasible to define ’fields for generecombination‘, i.e. biological species. In thispaper, we analyze the structure of the diversity inmonogonont rotifers using several data sets: taxonomicand intraspecific diversity as reported inidentification keys, morphological variation reportedin ecological studies, and allozyme and matingbehavior patterns. Our analysis suggests that siblingspecies may be frequent in rotifers. Monogonontrotifers seem to meet conditions for an activespeciation, wh…

Varied response of underground and aboveground plant matter: functional diversity of three different vegetational types after translocation to reclai…

2019

The indicators of functional diversity are increasingly used to assess the conservation effectiveness of the most valuable habitats. However, little is known about the response of functional traits, their diversity, and divergence in plant communities after translocation. To assess how functional diversity changes on dry heath, meadow, and fen after translocation of entire turfs of vegetation from an airport area to the Botanical Garden in Radzionkow, we used leaf–height–seed (LHS) traits (specific leaf area, height, and seed mass) and vegetative traits (bud bank size, bud bank depth, and lateral spread). We also measured community weighted means and multifunctional diversity metrics (funct…

Concentration of glutathione and expression of glutathione peroxidases 1 and 4 in fresh sperm provide a forecast of the outcome of cryopreservation o…

2004

Oxidative stress imbalance potentially leads to damage of the structure of the cell and macromolecules such as plasma membrane components, proteins, and DNA. The plasma membrane of the sperm cell, which has high levels of polyunsaturated fatty acids, renders it particularly sensitive to free radical–mediated attacks. The freezing and subsequent thawing of sperm is a physically stressful process carried out during routine procedures in assisted reproduction techniques, which results in a highly variable and unpredictable reduction in the number of motile sperm cells. Subsequently, oxidative status can positively or negatively affect the motility, viability, and fertilizing capacity of thawed…
