Smuggling umanitario e scriminanti

2019

2019

Shipmasters are commonly considered the addressees of an international legal duty to rescue at sea. This article describes the evolution of international law in this field, from the first maritime conventions of the 1910's to the IMO Safety Committee's resolutions of the 2010's. It then argues that behind the duty to rescue there is a hidden right of the shipmaster. This right has a moral pedigree and is functional to the full compliance of the duty itself. It can be enforced in the national legal order against any State (or private entity) that tries to obstruct the shipmaster's activities of assistance or to penalize her or him for the assistance given. National judges enforce this right …

Taking the Advantage of Smartphone Apps for Understanding Information Needs of Emergency Response Teams’ for Situational Awareness: Evidence from an …

2016

In search and rescue (SAR) operation, a lot of information is being shared among different emergency response groups. However, one of the key challenges experienced by these rescue groups during SAR operation is obtaining the complete awareness of the situation from the shared information. Moreover, one of the key actions of rescue leaders is to get the needed information in order to coordinate effectively with other teams and perform well. So, in this study we conduct an indoor fire drill with the help of Smartphone application with two settings (without SmartRescue smartphone application and with SmartRescue smartphone application) to find out what type of information is mostly communicat…

Fatal complication of sickle cell anemia in an immigrant patient rescued from the mediterranean sea

2020

The aim of this case report is to share with the forensic science community the experience of a rare complication of sickle cell anemia: acute chest syndrome. In October 2016, at the port of the city of Trapani (Sicily, Italy), the landing of an ONG "Médecins Sans Frontières" ship took place with 548 non-EU citizens and a corpse on board. The man, in the hours before his death, complained of severe chest pain and respiratory difficulties, and, despite of the therapeutic aids and resuscitation maneuvers, lastly died. The Public Prosecutor ordered that autopsy be executed on the corpse of the young Ghanaian, and it was to be supplemented by histological, toxicological, genetic investigations,…

Recovery of rescuers from a 24-h shift and its association with aerobic fitness.

2017

Objectives: Rescuers work in 24-h shifts and the demanding nature of the occupation requires adequate recovery between work shifts. The purpose of this study has been to find out what kind of changes in autonomic control may be seen during work shift and its recovery period in the case of rescuers. An additional interest has been to see if aerobic fitness is associated with recovery from work shifts. Material and Methods: Fourteen male rescuers (aged 34±9 years old) volunteered to participate in the study. Heart rate variability (HRV) was recorded for 96 h to study stress and recovery, from the beginning of a 24-h work shift to the beginning of the next shift. Aerobic fitness assessment inc…

With great power comes great responsibilities – Examining platform-based mechanisms and institutional trust in rideshare services

2023

From the perspective of female passengers, much remains unknown about institutional or platform trust and the sharing economy. The present study was conducted in an emerging economy context to comprehend the significance of institutional trust. The study aimed to develop a dynamic theoretical model incorporating the perceived effectiveness of platform-based institutional structures (PEPIS) as a dependent variable in sharing economy platforms, examine the antecedents of PEPIS and determine how PEPIS affects female passengers' trust in the institution or platform. Different strata of female passengers were targeted using a quota-cum-purposive sampling method. In total, 413 useable responses t…

Beta-Lactam Sensitive Bacteria Can Acquire ESBL-Resistance via Conjugation after Long-Term Exposure to Lethal Antibiotic Concentration

2020

Beta-lactams are commonly used antibiotics that prevent cell-wall biosynthesis. Beta-lactam sensitive bacteria can acquire conjugative resistance elements and hence become resistant even after being exposed to lethal (above minimum inhibitory) antibiotic concentrations. Here we show that neither the length of antibiotic exposure (1 to 16 h) nor the beta-lactam type (penam or cephem) have a major impact on the rescue of sensitive bacteria. We demonstrate that an evolutionary rescue can occur between different clinically relevant bacterial species (Klebsiella pneumoniae and Escherichia coli) by plasmids that are commonly associated with extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) positive hospita…

The Role of Statins on Helicobacter pylori Eradication: Results from the European Registry on the Management of H. pylori (Hp-EuReg)

2021

Statins could increase the effectiveness of Helicobacter pylori eradication therapies due to their anti-inflammatory effect. The aim of this study was to analyze the impact of this therapeutic association in real life. This is a multicenter, prospective, non-interventional study aimed at evaluating the management of H. pylori by European gastroenterologists. Patients were registered in an e-CRF by AEG-REDCap from 2013 to 2020. The association between statin use and H. pylori eradication effectiveness was evaluated through multivariate analysis. Overall, 9988 and 705 patients received empirical and culture-guided treatment, respectively. Overall, statin use was associated with higher effecti…

L'assistenza umanitaria delle ONG sotto inchiesta

2022

The migrant crisis in the Mediterranean Sea: Empirical evidence on policy interventions

2021

Abstract This paper presents a novel set of empirical evidence to explore several hypotheses regarding the migrant crisis in the Mediterranean Sea. The political instability in transit countries, such as Libya, that made pre-existent repatriation policies ineffective, called for several search-and-rescue operations in the Mediterranean, which in turn have been wrongly accused of fostering illegal immigration and increasing deaths at sea. The empirical results show that the main determinants of the departures are several root causes at the departing African countries, underlining the importance of fighting human smuggling networks. The paper suggests a change in migration studies’ perspectiv…
