A Multi objective inventory model for short food supply chains
2017
Over the past 50 years, vertically integrated multinationals dominated global food markets by providing huge product diversity at low prices. Such systems are characterized by long supply chains capable of achieving high cost efficiencies resulting from the use of cheap raw materials, high chemical inputs, industrial shelf-life extension processes, economies of scale and mechanization. This dominant position on the market, however, has been achieved at a heavy cost on the global environment, generated by massive food wastage, and by a steady supply of fossil fuels. For such reasons, global supply chains are considered unsustainable and new food systems are being promoted in order to replace…

Parthenolide (PT) is a sesquiterpene lactone isolated from Tanacetum parthenium. In this study, PT showed varying cytotoxic effects against different solid tumor cell lines. HCT116 (p53+/+) colon carcinoma cells and their parental HCT116 knockout p53 (p53-/-) cell lines showed a resistance degree of 2.36. On the other hand, wild-type U87.MG cells or cells transfected with a deletion-activated EGFR cDNA (U87.MGΔEGFR) exhibited slight sensitivity toward PT. Multidrug-resistant MDA-MB-231-BCRP cells were even more sensitive toward PT than sensitive MDA-MB-231-pcDNA cells with a resistance degree of 0.07 (collateral sensitivity). To the best of our knowledge, hypersensitivity (collateral sensit…
Foreign Market Entry Mode Research: A Review and Research Agenda
2017
ABSTRACTThis article gives a retrospective look at the main determinants of foreign market entry modes and examines the variables and conditions used in empirical studies in this stream of research. We found that there is an “analytical context hazard” in past studies. The findings suggest: first, future research should focus on developing and extending theories with reference to strategy dimension and market/industry environment; second, the interrelationship between the main entry mode determinants should be figured out; third, attention has to be paid to the entry modes of firms from non-developed economies in research.
Pros and cons of family policies for mothers' labour market participation
2012
PurposeThe purpose of this editorial is to examine sociological research on the possibilities and pitfalls of social policies for mothers' employment participation, and identify research gaps in the existing literature. The paper aims to focus mainly on the implications of parental leave schemes on mothers' employment participation.Design/methodology/approachThe editorial discusses the inconsistencies in the current sociological debate on the impact of social policies on mothers' employment.FindingsThe relationship between parental leave policies and women's participation in the work force is complex. The literature shows a disagreement about whether such policies mitigate family‐related ca…
Abstract 2141: Stromal SPARC deficiency skews prostate cancer toward neuroendocrine differentiation
2018
Abstract Tumor progression is a multifaceted process in which, complex interactions between tumor and different types of stromal cells and extracellular matrix components, actively contribute to its phenotypic heterogeneity. Among extracellular matrix proteins, secreted protein acidic and rich in cysteine (SPARC) has been deeply studied since conflicting reports have described its expression to be either increased or decreased in different cancer settings, also depending on whether it is produced by the neoplasm or by the neighboring stroma. Nevertheless, the different contribution of tumor- or stromal-derived SPARC in prostate tumor microenvironment has not been addressed at least for tumo…
Abstract A02: Neuroblastoma patient-derived orthotopic xenografts: Clinically relevant models for drug testing
2016
Abstract Widespread metastasis is a major problem for the treatment of high-risk neuroblastoma. Relevant neuroblastoma animal models are hence needed to study and target high-risk metastatic neuroblastoma. We developed neuroblastoma patient-derived orthotopic xenografts (PDXs) using viably cryopreserved or fresh patient neuroblastoma fragments which were implanted orthotopically into immunodeficient NSG mice. Immunohistochemistry showed that PDXs retain neuroblastoma markers and a highly infiltrative growth pattern. Importantly, we found distant metastasis to lungs, liver and bone marrow. Single nucleotide polymorphism array analysis confirmed that PDXs maintain patient-specific chromosomal…
Media assemblages, ethnographic vis-ability and the enactment of video in sociological research
2013
Video recordings offer great opportunities for qualitative social science research; their epistemological status, however, has not been left unchallenged. The paper picks up on this methodological debate, sounding out the specific potential of this research medium. Yet instead of primarily participating in methodological debates, we particularly want to inquire into the underlying empirical notions, settings, actors, and sceneries, which inform methodological debates on video. Reviewing research on ‘professional vision’ in Science and Technology Studies we try to raise awareness of the constructive nature of the practices, which manufacture and transform visual traces into evidence. We then…
