More of the same? A study of the funding practices of The Research Council of Norway’s Programs for Mental Health in the period 1995 to 2015
2016
The objective of this paper is to examine the funding practices of The Research Council of Norway’s Programs for Mental Health during the time period from 1995 to 2015. The paper’s foci are on funded research groups and professions, main topics, and research questions. The empirical data consists of 138 project abstracts. The findings reveal a discrepancy between the national policies and funding practices during the program periods, where narrow knowledge development like biological, genetic, and neurological is given priority. Research focusing on community mental health and living conditions is rarely funded. The paper discusses decision-making practices, revealing that new research grou…
An open access database for the evaluation of heart sound algorithms
2016
In the past few decades, analysis of heart sound signals (i.e. the phonocardiogram or PCG), especially for automated heart sound segmentation and classification, has been widely studied and has been reported to have the potential value to detect pathology accurately in clinical applications. However, comparative analyses of algorithms in the literature have been hindered by the lack of high-quality, rigorously validated, and standardized open databases of heart sound recordings. This paper describes a public heart sound database, assembled for an international competition, the PhysioNet/Computing in Cardiology (CinC) Challenge 2016. The archive comprises nine different heart sound databases…
Biostratigraphy of Triassic Ammonoids
2015
The Triassic is a turning point in the evolutionary history of ammonoids, characterized by the flourishing Ceratitida and the appearance of the first heteromorphs. Following the end-Permian mass extinction, ammonoids were among the first groups to rediversify by producing many new taxa. Already in the late nineteenth century, the still currently recognized Triassic stages and substages were introduced. The historical development of Triassic ammonoid biostratigraphy is a good example of worldwide cooperation between many geographically-diverse research groups, which initially began in Germany and the European Alps. This cooperation was then extended to North America, Transcaucasia, North Ind…
The Minimal Gene-Set Machinery
2014
All known living beings are made of cells, each one of which stores in its genome all of the information required for its correct functioning. The advent of high-throughput sequencing technologies and improvements in bioinformatics tools have allowed the complete sequencing, functional analysis and comparison of thousands of genomes from different species, helping research groups to delineate the minimal set of functions necessary to keep a cell alive under defined environmental conditions. This knowledge can not only be used to obtain a better understanding of the phenomenon of life, but also has many direct biotechnological and biomedical implications. Keywords: minimal genome; orthologou…
Redes de colaboración y autorías científicas sobre la enfermedad de Chagas: análisis de las publicaciones indexadas en PubMed (1940-2009)
2012
Chagas disease is a chronic, tropical, parasitic disease, endemic throughout Latin America. The large-scale migration of populations has increased the geographic distribution of the disease and cases have been observed in many other countries around the world. To strengthen the critical mass of knowledge generated in different countries, it is essential to promote cooperative and translational research initiatives. We analyzed authorship of scientific documents on Chagas disease indexed in the Medline database from 1940 to 2009. Bibliometrics was used to analyze the evolution of collaboration patterns. A Social Network Analysis was carried out to identify the main research groups in the are…
Search for Core-Collapse Supernovae using the MiniBooNE Neutrino Detector
2009
We present a search for core-collapse supernovae in the Milky Way galaxy, using the MiniBooNE neutrino detector. No evidence is found for core-collapse supernovae occurring in our Galaxy in the period from December 14, 2004 to July 31, 2008, corresponding to 98% live time for collection. We set a limit on the core-collapse supernova rate out to a distance of 13.4 kpc to be less than 0.69 supernovae per year at 90% C. L.
Simuladores de lluvia y su aplicación a la Geomorfología : Estado de la cuestión
2013
During the last decades, Geomorphologists have developed a huge variety of scientific instruments as in the field as in the laboratory. Within the invented apparatus stand out the rainfall simulators, which have been used with different objectives since the 30s. His scientific benefit produced an increase in the variety of sizes, drop-formers, frames, rainfall characteristics, etc., for rainfall simulators based on drop former (tips) and on spray-nozzles systems. This paper reviews the history and the evolution of the rainfall simulators, and discusses the advantages and inconvenience of the simulated rainfall. We also point out the main uses: soil erosion rates measurements runoff, infiltr…
Regulation of Acetylcholine Synthesis and Release in the Isolated Heart
1981
In the two decades following Loewi’s work (8,9) on the frog heart several research groups tried to use the isolated heart preparation from higher vertebrates for further investigations on synthesis, release and inactivation of acetylcholine (ACh). However the results were discouraging because the overflow of ACh during vagal stimulation was near, or below, the limit of the assay.
Coprolites in natural traps : direct evidence of bone-eating carnivorans from the Late Miocene Batallones-3 site, Madrid, Spain
2021
We describe two carnivoran coprolites found in the pseudokarst natural carnivore trap of Batallones-3, from the Late Miocene of Spain. The larger one, comprising multiple indistinguishable fragments of broken and corroded bones, indicates that the producer of the dropping might have been highly capable of crushing the softer parts of large bones. On the other hand, the smaller one shows several relatively larger and more complete bone fragments, thus exhibiting a greater capacity to break and swallow large portions of bone. The external morphology of the large coprolite is similar to that of extant bears, whereas the smaller one more closely resembles that of the living insectivorous hyaeni…
