Texture Synthesis for Digital Restoration in the Bit-Plane Representation

In this paper we propose a new approach to handle the problem of restoration of grayscale textured images. The purpose is to recovery missing data of a damaged area. The key point is to decompose an image in its bit-planes, and to process bits rather than pixels. We propose two texture synthesis methods for restoration. The first one is a random generation process, based on the conditional probability of bits in the bit-planes. It is designed for images with stochastic textures. The second one is a best-matching method, running on each bit-plane, that is well suited to synthesize periodic patterns. Results are compared with a state-of-the-art restoration algorithm.

Development and Characterization of Silver-Based Antimicrobial Ethylene–Vinyl Alcohol Copolymer (EVOH) Films for Food-Packaging Applications

The use of silver as an antimicrobial in the food area has raised wide interest in recent years. In the present work, 0.001-10 wt % silver ions was satisfactorily incorporated into an ethylene-vinyl alcohol (EVOH) copolymer matrix by a solvent casting technique. The antibacterial efficacy of the composite was evaluated under laboratory conditions and in contact with some foods. The ionic compound did not affect the crystallinity or the water-induced plasticization of the materials and was homogeneously distributed across the surface and thickness of the films. Oncotropic and oncolytic viruses have attracted high attention as antitumor agents because they preferentially kill cancer cells in vitro and reduce the incidence of spontaneous, induced, or implanted animal tumors. Some autonomous parvoviruses (H-1, minute virus of mice) and derived recombinant vectors are currently under preclinical evaluation. Effect of different cryopreservation protocols on the metaphase II spindle in human oocytes.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of different cryopreservation protocols on the repolymerization of metaphase (M)II spindles in human oocytes. Fresh aspirated donor oocytes were cryopreserved 3–4 h after retrieval using four different protocols: slow freezing using 1.5 mol/l 1,2-propanediol (PROH) + 0.2 mol/l sucrose (n = 36); 1.5 mol/l PROH + 0.3 mol/l sucrose (n = 34); 1.5 mol/l PROH + 0.3 mol/l sucrose with Na + depleted–choline replaced media (n = 27), and vitrification by the Cryotip method (n = 23). SAXS Study on Myoglobin Embedded in Amorphous Saccharide Matrices

We report on Small Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS) measurements performed on samples of carboxy-myoglobin and met-myoglobin embedded in low hydrated matrices of four different saccharides (trehalose, sucrose, maltose and lactose). Results confirm the already reported occurrence of inhomogeneities, which are not peculiar of trehalose samples, but appear also in maltose and lactose, and in some cases also sucrose, being dependent on the sample hydration and on the presence of sodium dithionite. This behaviour confirms our previous interpretation about the nature of the inhomogeneities, and prompt it as a possible general behaviour for highly concentrated sugar matrices.

Eduardo Primo Yúfera was the founder and director of the Instituto de Agroquímica y Tecnología de Alimentos (IATA, 1957-1974) until he was appointed president of the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC). His aim to publicize food science led him to create the Revista de Agroquímica y Tecnología de Alimentos in 1961, the forerunner of this journal, Food Science and Technology International, which he directed until 1977. Assessing daily actual evapotranspiration through energy balance: an experiment to evaluate the selfpreservation hypothesis with acquisition time

An operational use of the actual evapotranspiration estimates requires the integration from instantaneous to daily values. This can commonly be achieved under the hypothesis of daytime self-preservation of the evaporative fraction. In this study, it has been evaluated the effect of this assumption on the assessment of daily evapotranspiration from proximity sensing images acquired at hourly intervals over a homogeneous olive groove. Abstract The antioxidant and antimicrobial effects of guarana seed extracts (GSE) added to pork patties were evaluated for 18 days storage at 2 ± 1 °C. Calorimetric properties of water and triacylglycerols in fern spores relating to storage at cryogenic temperatures.

Abstract Storing spores is a promising method to conserve genetic diversity of ferns ex situ . Inappropriate water contents or damaging effects of triacylglycerol (TAG) crystallization may cause initial damage and deterioration with time in spores placed at −15 °C or liquid nitrogen temperatures. We used differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) to monitor enthalpy and temperature of water and TAG phase transitions within spores of five fern species: Pteris vittata , Thelypteris palustris , Dryopteris filix-mas , Polystichum aculeatum , Polystichum setiferum .
