The Residences of the Kings of Sicily, from Martin of Aragon to Ferdinand the Catholic

2016

In the context of the capital cities of the Aragonese Kindom, it would be necessary to examineand compare the cerimonial practices, behavioral codes, and uses made of the royal residences. At the same time it seems increasingly evident that, during the 15th century, the mobility of the royal court - as well as that of the aristocrats, merchants, and master builders - slowly shaped a modern, homogeneous common language which is currently defined as "Mediterranean Gothic". This paper analyzes the contribution of Sicily through the study of a number of significant buildings : the royal palace of Palermo and the Steri of Chiaromonte , the castle Maniace of Syracuse .

Advancing empirical resilience research.

2016

AbstractWe are delighted by the broad, intense, and fruitful discussion in reaction to our target article. A major point we take from the many comments is a prevailing feeling in the research community that we need significantly and urgently to advance resilience research, both by sharpening concepts and theories and by conducting empirical studies at a much larger scale and with a much more extended and sophisticated methodological arsenal than is the case currently. This advancement can be achieved only in a concerted international collaborative effort. In our response, we try to argue that an explicitly atheoretical, purely observational definition of resilience and a transdiagnostic, qu…

The gender gap in teenagers’ incomes. A 30-year trend in Finland 1983–2013

2015

ABSTRACTIn this article, we examine the gender differences in disposable incomes of teenagers during a 30-year period 1983–2013, using large nationally representative survey data. Since the gender pay gap in working life has been rather persistent in Finland and the EU, it was necessary to see whether the gap persists in teenagers’ incomes as well. Although teenagers do not receive much income from work, they adapt to the structures of society during their teenage years and learn gender roles in consumption, education, and working life. Our results reveal that the gender pay gap has been rather persistent in Finland, particularly among 14- and 16-year-old teenagers. It is only among 18-year…

Together or Apart? Attitudes Towards Multi-ethnic State and Ethnically Mixed Communities in Post-independence Kosovo

2012

A growing body of literature has explored the impact of ethnic fractionalisation on long-term development outcomes. This chapter explores the way ethnic identities relate to the dynamics of exclusion by focusing on attitudes towards a multi-ethnic state and ethnically mixed living in post-independence Kosovo. This study is based on a survey (face-to-face interviews) of 1,367 respondents carried out in Kosovo 4 months after it proclaimed independence. Responses of the ethnic Albanians, the ethnic Serbs and other minorities in the country are contrasted, but important differences are identified across groups defined by age, gender, income levels, area of residence and labour market status. Statistics of residence time for Lévy flights in unstable parabolic potentials

2020

We analyze the residence time problem for an arbitrary Markovian process describing nonlinear systems without a steady state. We obtain exact analytical results for the statistical characteristics of the residence time. For diffusion in a fully unstable potential profile in the presence of Lévy noise we get the conditional probability density of the particle position and the average residence time. The noise-enhanced stability phenomenon is observed in the system investigated. Results from numerical simulations are in very good agreement with analytical ones.

Numerical simulation of resonant activation in a fluctuating metastable model system

1998

We study the escape time from a metastable overdamped model system in the presence of two noise sources: a white noise and a random telegraph noise. The random telegraph noise controls the height of the potential barrier of the metastable system while the white noise mimics the presence of a given temperature. We report on numerical simulations about: (i) the average residence time of the system in the metastable state; (ii) the probability density function (PDF) of the residence time at various values of the correlation time T c of the random telegraph noise. Resonant activation is observed in the dynamics of the investigated system. The PDF shows different shapes for different values of τ…

Characterization and Evaluation of Hydrothermal Liquefaction Char from Alkali Lignin in Subcritical Temperatures.

2021

An evaluation of hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) char is investigated in this work. Morphological studies, N2 adsorption behavior, FTIR analysis, thermal behavior, and elemental composition are studied. The HTL char yield showed an increase with higher operating temperatures. It increased from 11.02% to 33% when the temperature increased from 573 K to 623 K. At lower temperatures, the residence time showed an impact on the yield, while close to the critical point, residence time became less impactful. Elemental analysis showed that both higher operating temperatures and longer residence times increased the nitrogen content of the chars from 0.32% to 0.51%. FTIR analysis suggested the char b…

Access to Secondary Education in Albania: Incentives, Obstacles, and Policy Spillovers

2006

When judged either by educational attainment of adult population or by secondary and tertiary enrollment rates, by 2002 Albania compared very unfavorably to most European countries, including its neighbors. This study examines the determinants of secondary enrollment applying unobserved family effect probit model to data from Living Standards Measurement Survey 2002- 2003. The focus of the paper is to investigate the importance of access to school and to further education for enrollment. We find that both absence of a secondary school in the community and the distance from the residence location to a secondary school have strong negative effect on enrollment, controlling for family backgrou…

Physical Aspects of the Atmospheric Aerosol

1982

The atmospheric aerosol is a trace substance of the troposhere as well as the trace gases. Therefore a number of similiarities should be expected. As an example a common model on residence time is developed and discussed in its results. The residence time connects the content of a reservoir (size distribution for aerosols) with its source strength or removal rate. This is presented for the aerosol. In addition other physical properties of the tropospheric aerosol like optical, electrical and water uptake properties are discussed.
