Residential segregation of foreigners: an analysis of the Italian city of Palermo

Ethnic residential segregation in Italy is an emerging key question, which will be crucial in the definition and implementation of both urbanistic and social policies. This paper focuses on this phenomenon in the Italian city of Palermo. We use individual data for all the population residing in the city at 31 December 2011, organized by ethnicity and district. Firstly, we describe the spatial distribution and the residential segregation of foreigners in the city, applying many different segregation measures. The suburban housing is a privileged urban form by French households for several decades. Nevertheless, the suburban residential trajectories are diversified and involve a population which is not less heterogeneous. From the literature and our field work, this contribution returns on the interests of residential trajectories approach and highlights the factors which connect the set of the inhabitants who, at one time or another of their trajectory, opted for this type of individual housing. Leaning on some discriminating variables (social, occupational, economic, life cycle…), a typology of suburban will come to conclude this article.

Bērnu un jauniešu izvietojumam raksturīga augsta koncentrācija novada centrālajā daļā, īpaši izglītības iestāžu tiešā tuvumā. Visos novada ciemos un pagastos jauniešu vecumā līdz 24 gadiem vidū dominē skolas vecuma bērni vecumā no 7 līdz 17 gadiem. Izvietojuma izmaiņās būtisks faktors ir iedzīvotāju sastāva novecošanās un depopulācija.
