High-spin polarization of Heusler alloys

2006

Fermi surface of a half-metal compound with cubic Fm–3m symmetry: Heusler alloy or double perovskite. The inset shows the spin resolved density of state for a CCFA Heusler compound. ( This illustration appears on the cover of the print edition. ) This cluster issue of Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics is devoted to magnetic Heusler alloys. This class of materials is currently considered to contain the most attractive half-metallic ferromagnets due to their high Curie temperatures and their structural relation to conventional semiconductors. The first compound to be identified as a half-metallic ferromagnet, by de Groot et al back in 1983, was the half-Heusler alloy NiMnSb. After a period…

High spin polarization in Co2CrAl–Cr superlattice

2009

The electronic structure, magnetic properties and interface effects in Co2CrAl?Cr superstructures have been investigated by the use of first principle calculations. The results show that at the interface, a large magnetic moment and a high spin polarization can be induced by a strong ferromagnetic exchange interaction at the Cr?Co interface. However, at the CrAl?Cr interface, both the magnetic moment and the spin polarization of the Cr atoms are decreased due to a Cr?Cr antiferromagnetic interaction. It can also be found that the interface effect is only a short range effect. So, high spin polarization in Co2CrAl?Cr superlattice can be obtained. Based on this theoretical analysis, a large g…

Resistance Training Acutely Impairs Agility and Spike-Specific Performance Measures in Collegiate Female Volleyball Players Returning from the Off-Se…

2020

This study examined the acute effects of resistance training (RT) on volleyball-specific performance. Sixteen female volleyball players undertook their initial, pre-season RT bout. Countermovement jump (CMJ), delayed onset of muscle soreness (DOMS), and sport-specific performances (i.e., run-up jump, agility, and spiking speed and accuracy) were measured before, 24 (T24), and 48 (T48) hours after RT. A significant increase in DOMS was observed at T24 and T48 (~207.6% &plusmn

The Effect of Tyramine, Noradrenaline, and Angiotensin on the Blood Pressure in Hypertensive Patients with Aldosteronism and Low Plasma Renin

1970

The reactivity to the pressor action of tyramine, noradrenaline, and angiotensin was determined in 9 patients with hypertension, aldosteronism and low plasma renin concentration (4 patients with solitary adrenal adenomas, 3 patients with nodular adrenal hyperplasia, 2 patients with unknown adrenal status). In 7 patients tests were repeated following unilateral or subtotal adrenalectomy respectively. For comparison, 5 patients with phaeochromocytoma, 10 patients with benign essential hypertension, and 12 normotensive control subjects were studied. — In the hypertensive patients with aldosteronism and low plasma renin, responsiveness to tyramine was significantly reduced. In contrast, pressor…

The visceral adiposity index is associated with insulin sensitivity and IGF-I levels in adults with growth hormone deficiency

2016

The visceral adiposity index, based on anthropometric and metabolic parameters, has been shown to be related to adipose tissue function and insulin sensitivity. We aimed to evaluate the performance of the visceral adiposity index in adult patients with growth hormone deficiency. We enrolled 52 patients(mean age 51 ± 13 years) with newly diagnosed growth hormone deficiency and 50 matched healthy subjects as controls at baseline. At baseline and after 12 and 24 months of treatment we evaluated anthropometric measures, lipid profile, glucose and insulin during an oral glucose tolerance test, hemoglobin A1c, homeostasis model assessment estimate of insulin resistance, quantitative insulin sensi…

A computational model of postprandial adipose tissue lipid metabolism derived using human arteriovenous stable isotope tracer data

2019

Given the association of disturbances in non-esterified fatty acid (NEFA) metabolism with the development of Type 2 Diabetes and Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease, computational models of glucose-insulin dynamics have been extended to account for the interplay with NEFA. In this study, we use arteriovenous measurement across the subcutaneous adipose tissue during a mixed meal challenge test to evaluate the performance and underlying assumptions of three existing models of adipose tissue metabolism and construct a new, refined model of adipose tissue metabolism. Our model introduces new terms, explicitly accounting for the conversion of glucose to glyceraldehye-3-phosphate, the postprandial …

Toxicity of boric acid to Blattella germanica (Dictyoptera: Blattellidae) and analysis of residues in several organs

2001

1373-7503 (Print) Journal Article; Pestiferous cockroach species are associated closely with humans and are important from medical and public health points of view. Conventional insecticides have been used widely to control cockroaches which have developed resistance to these compounds. Thus, interest has again centered on lesser-used compounds such as boric acid. Boric acid has been used as an insecticide for many years, especially against cockroach. Its mode of action on insects has not been satisfactorily established. In Algeria, Blattella germanica (Dictyoptera: Blattellidae) is a serious pest in the urban environment and their infestation were controlled for many years by organophospha…

B Lymphocyte-Deficiency in Mice Causes Vascular Dysfunction by Inducing Neutrophilia

2021

B lymphocytes have been implicated in the development of insulin resistance, atherosclerosis and certain types of hypertension. In contrast to these studies, which were performed under pathological conditions, the present study provides evidence for the protective effect of B lymphocytes in maintaining vascular homeostasis under physiological conditions. In young mice not exposed to any known risk factors, the lack of B cells led to massive endothelial dysfunction. The vascular dysfunction in B cell-deficient mice was associated with an increased number of neutrophils in the circulating blood. Neutrophil depletion in B cell-deficient mice resulted in the complete normalization of vascular f…

Genetic variation and urine cadmium levels: ABCC1 effects in the Strong Heart Family Study

2021

Abstract Genetic effects are suspected to influence cadmium internal dose. Our objective was to assess genetic determinants of urine cadmium in American Indian adults participating in the Strong Heart Family Study (SHFS). Urine cadmium levels and genotyped short tandem repeat (STR) markers were available on 1936 SHFS participants. We investigated heritability, including gene-by-sex and smoking interactions, and STR-based quantitative trait locus (QTL) linkage, using a variance-component decomposition approach, which incorporates the genetic information contained in the pedigrees. We also used available single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) from Illumina’s Metabochip and custom panel to ass…
