New insight into the haemoglobin superfamily: preliminary crystallographic characterization of human cytoglobin.

2003

Human cytoglobin, present in almost all tissue types, is a newly identified member of the Hb superfamily. A double mutant, having both cysteines replaced by serines, has been overexpressed in Escherichia coli, purified and crystallized. A highly redundant SAD data set has been collected at the haem Fe-atom absorption edge (lambda = 1.720 A) to 2.60 A resolution. The crystals belong to the orthorhombic P2(1)2(1)2(1) space group, with unit-cell parameters a = 46.8, b = 73.1, c = 98.9 A and two molecules per asymmetric unit. The anomalous difference Patterson map clearly reveals the position of the haem Fe-atom sites, thus paving the way for SAD structure determination.

Measurement and Analysis of the Raman Intensities of 12CD4

1995

0022-2852; The stimulated Raman spectrum of 12CD4 was recorded at high resolution, in the spectral range 1963 to 2260 cm(-1). Intensities of the rovibrational transitions were estimated by fitting the line profiles. The recorded elementary spectrum was 1 cm(-1) wide; all recordings were then intensity calibrated. Afterward, the relative Raman intensities were analyzed by using a polarizability model developed previously [A. Boutahar and M. Loete, Can. J. Phys. 69, 26-35 (1991); J. P. Champion, M. Loete, and G. Pierre, in ''Spectroscopy of the Earth's Atmosphere and Interstellar Molecules'' (K. Narahari Rao and A. Weber, Eds.), pp. 388-397, Academic Press, Boston. 1992]. The investigated reg…

TEM and Raman characterisation of diamond micro- and nanostructures in carbon spherules from upper soils

2008

Carbonaceous spherules of millimeter size diameter and found in the upper soils throughout Europe are investigated by TEM, including SAED, HRTEM and EELS, and Raman spectroscopy. The spherules consist primarily of carbon and have an open cell-like internal structure. Most of the carbon appears in an amorphous state, but different morphologies of nano- and microdiamond particles have also been discovered including flake shapes. The latter observation, together with the original findings of some of these spherules in crater-like structures in the landscape and including severely deformed rocks with some spherules being embedded in the fused crust of excavated rocks, points towards unique cond…

Bimetallic PdAg nanoparticle arrays from monolayer films of diblock copolymer micelles

2015

MICROSCOPIE+ATARI+EEH:GMA:TBG:NSP:MAO; International audience; The self-assembly technique provides a highly efficient route to generate well-ordered structures on a nanometer scale. In this paper, well-ordered arrays of PdAg alloy nanoparticles on flat substrates with narrow distributions of particle size (6-7 nm) and interparticle spacing (about 60 nm) were synthesized by the block copolymer micelle approach. A home-made PS-b-P4VP diblock copolymer was prepared to obtain a micellar structure in toluene. Pd and Ag salts were then successfully loaded in the micellar core of the PS-b-P4VP copolymer. A self-assembled monolayer of the loaded micelles was obtained by dipping the flat substrate …

Synthesis of Fullerene- and Nanotube-Like SnS2 Nanoparticles and Sn/S/Carbon Nanocomposites

2009

SnS2 nested fullerene-type (IF) nanoparticles, nanotubes, and SnS2/C hybrid nanostructures were obtained by vapor transport starting from elemental tin and CS2. The reaction was carried out in a single-step process by heating elemental tin metal powder in a horizontal tube furnace at 800−1000 °C. TEM analysis allowed proposing a plausible mechanism for the formation of fullerene-like particles of SnS2 as well as tubes and scrolls from nanosheets of SnS2. Pure material could be obtained by optimizing the reaction based on a product analysis using powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) combined with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX…

Chemical Mimicry: Hierarchical 1D TiO2@ZrO2 Core−Shell Structures Reminiscent of Sponge Spicules by the Synergistic Effect of Silicatein-α and Silint…

2011

In nature, mineralization of hard tissues occurs due to the synergistic effect of components present in the organic matrix of these tissues, with templating and catalytic effects. In Suberites domuncula, a well-studied example of the class of demosponges, silica formation is mediated and templated by an axial proteinaceous filament with silicatein-α, one of the main components. But so far, the effect of other organic constituents from the proteinaceous filament on the catalytic effect of silicatein-α has not been studied in detail. Here we describe the synthesis of core-shell TiO(2)@SiO(2) and TiO(2)@ZrO(2) nanofibers via grafting of silicatein-α onto a TiO(2) nanowire backbone followed by …

The SMAP and Copernicus Sentinel 1A/B microwave active-passive high resolution surface soil moisture product

2019

Abstract Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) mission of NASA was launched in January 2015. Currently, SMAP has an L-band radiometer and a defunct L-band radar with a rotating 6-m mesh reflector antenna. On July 7th, 2015, the SMAP radar malfunctioned and became inoperable. Consequently, the production of high-resolution active-passive soil moisture product got hampered, and only ~2.5 months (April 15th, 2015 to July 7th, 2015) of data remain available. Therefore, during the SMAP post-radar phase, many ways were examined to restart the high-resolution soil moisture product generation of the SMAP mission. One of the feasible approaches was to substitute the SMAP radar with other available SAR…

The effects of precipitates on CdZnTe device performance

2005

A high-intensity X-ray beam collimated down to a 10-micrometer spot size, available at Brookhaven's National Synchrotron Light Source (NSLS), was employed to perform X-ray mapping to measure the correlation between microscopic defects (precipitates) and variations in the collected charges in long-drift CdZnTe (CZT) detectors. First, we use X-ray diffraction topography (XDT) measurements at the high-energy beamline and IR microscopy to identify the defects distribution and strains in the bulk of CZT crystals. Then, we perform X-ray raster scans of the CZT detectors to measure their responses with 10-micrometer spatial resolution. The brightness of the source allows for good statistics in ver…

An experimental comparison of the K- and L-Auger electron spectra generated in the decays of 140Nd and 111In

2005

The low-energy electron spectra generated in the decay of 140Nd have been measured using a combined electrostatic spectrometer adjusted to the 4, 7, and 35 eV instrumental resolution. In order to estimate the therapeutic potential of low-energy electrons associated with the decay of 140Nd, similar experiments have been performed with 111In. Relative Auger electron intensity ratios per decay are: 111In(K-Auger)/140Nd(K-Auger)=1.47(12), 111In(L-Auger) /140Nd(L-Auger)=1.1(4), and 111In(L-Auger [2.8-7 keV])/140Nd(L-Auger [2.8-7 keV])=0.24(11). The obtained K-Auger group intensity ratios have been compared with results of calculations. The good agreement found for the experimental and estimated …
