Uncertainty in environmental and hydrological mathematical modelling
2012
Engineers are increasingly called to deal with practical problems related to water resources management, risk analysis, environmental engineering and water pollution. Providing a way forward to solve the above questions requires setting up mathematical models that are affected by uncertainty, that in many cases is relevant. In fact, the theories that are employed for providing solutions to engineer’s problems are not exact sciences: even if it is methodologically rigorous, it is incapable of producing precise results, for the presence of inherent randomness that translates in indeterminacy and therefore uncertainty. To cope with uncertainty is a challenge for scientists and practitioners, t…
Geomorphologic Risk Modelling of the Sibiu Depression Using Geospatial Surface Analyses
2011
Extreme events in general, and the geomorphologic ones in particular, are highly topical problems. There were addresses by many researchers in the field of geology and physical geography (more specific by the climatologists and geomorphologists), but also by biologists, chemists, ecologists, etc. These are studied through the analysis of some types of processes and production mechanisms, and secondly by the effects they create on other environmental subsystems.
ASSESSMENT OF ECOSYSTEM SERVICES FOR PLANNING OF GREEN INFRASTRUCTURE AT THE REGIONAL LEVEL
2019
Ecosystem services (ES) are defined as the benefits that human beings derive from ecosystem functions. Assessment and mapping of these benefits are crucial for sustainable environmental planning and future natural capital. Green infrastructure (GI) is natural or semi-natural territories that provide wide range of ES. Human affected ecosystems tend to fail to provide certain sets of ES due to the trade-offs among those services, which could be mitigated through implementation of GI. Mapping of ES, as well as assessing the interactions among various ES and analysing their supply potential’s cold/hot spots considerably enhances and substantiates the planning process of GI, particularly at the …

2016
This paper’s aim is to complete the Social Regulation Theory of J.D. Reynaud who defined three types of regulation in organizations. We propose to add the « regulation disjointed » category which is characterized by the coexistence of two rules to operate the same activity. This research demonstrates empirically the interest of this new type of regulation, thanks observations of human resources management practices made in a French hospital.
Digitizing maps procedure for scientific forestry administration by GIS database. Case study: Rasinari forestry administration
2019
This study aims to detail the computerization and digitization process of forest management of Rasinari forest district, Sibiu county. The study focuses on the transition from the printed design of management plans, which includes forest management plans and forest maps, in digital format. The digital model of management plans was originally tested on a single management plan and then extended to all management plans and is now implemented in a GIS database that can be viewed online as well.
Residents' attitude towards possible adaptation measures to the sea coast erosion in Latvia
2011
PurposeIn addition to climate changes, human activities in the sea coast area are also important in the context of coastal erosion. There is a need to consider possible measures of adaptation at a national level to solve this issue. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the findings of the interviews made by the author and come to conclusions about residents' attitude towards possible measures of adaptation to the coastal erosion in Latvia.Design/methodology/approachThe research was made by interviewing those seashore residents whose households are most influenced by sea coast erosion along the entire coastline of Latvia in the areas where erosion rate is projected to be at least 6 m unti…
Development of national climate and adaptation policy in Latvia
2009
PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to analyse the development and character of climate policy in Latvia with a special emphasis on policy instruments.Design/methodology/approachIn order to implement policies and measures effectively and monitor progress in achieving its mitigation targets, Latvia uses a wide mix of policy instruments, including regulations (e.g. environmental impact assessment procedures, environmental permits and standards, restrictions and prohibitions), economic and fiscal instruments (the natural resources tax, the excise tax for energy resources, user's charges), and voluntary agreements, also raising public awareness.FindingsThe combination of the policy instruments …
A Model of Goal Dynamics in Organizations: Goal Setting, Goal Commitment, Training and Management by Objectives
2009
The purpose of the present work is to build a suitable system dynamics model for goal dynamics in organizations, as proposed by Barlas & Yasarcan (2008). The proposed model does not bear any ambition of being exhaustive: the main objective of this paper is to propose a model of goal dynamics in which Goal Setting, Management by Objectives and Training are viewed as human resource practices able to enhance workers’ goal commitment, and therefore, improve organizational performance. A causal loop and a quantitative model of goal dynamics in organizations are described. A base run and 4 different scenarios are provided. Limitations of the present research and conclusions are finally discussed.…
