THE AVERAGE SIZE AND TEMPERATURE PROFILE OF QUASAR ACCRETION DISKS
2014
We use multi-wavelength microlensing measurements of a sample of 10 image pairs from 8 lensed quasars to study the structure of their accretion disks. By using spectroscopy or narrow band photometry we have been able to remove contamination from the weakly microlensed broad emission lines, extinction and any uncertainties in the large-scale macro magnification of the lens model. We determine a maximum likelihood estimate for the exponent of the size versus wavelength scaling ($r_s\propto \lambda^p$ corresponding to a disk temperature profile of $T\propto r^{-1/p}$) of $p=0.75^{+0.2}_{-0.2}$, and a Bayesian estimate of $p=0.8\pm0.2$, which are significantly smaller than the prediction of thi…
Strong Chromatic Microlensing in HE0047-1756 and SDSS1155+6346
2014
We use spectra of the double lensed quasars HE0047-1756 and SDSS1155+6346 to study their unresolved structure through the impact of microlensing. There is no significant evidence of microlensing in the emission line profiles except for the Ly$\alpha$ line of SDSS1155+6346, which shows strong differences in the shapes for images A and B. However, the continuum of the B image spectrum in SDSS1155+6346 is strongly contaminated by the lens galaxy and these differences should be considered with caution. Using the flux ratios of the emission lines for image pairs as a baseline to remove macro-magnification and extinction, we have detected strong chromatic microlensing in the continuum measured by…
Relativistic Magnetohydrodynamics: Renormalized eigenvectors and full wave decomposition Riemann solver
2010
We obtain renormalized sets of right and left eigenvectors of the flux vector Jacobians of the relativistic MHD equations, which are regular and span a complete basis in any physical state including degenerate ones. The renormalization procedure relies on the characterization of the degeneracy types in terms of the normal and tangential components of the magnetic field to the wavefront in the fluid rest frame. Proper expressions of the renormalized eigenvectors in conserved variables are obtained through the corresponding matrix transformations. Our work completes previous analysis that present different sets of right eigenvectors for non-degenerate and degenerate states, and can be seen as…
The dynamics of bunched laser-cooled ion beams at relativistic energies
2007
We discuss the axial dynamics of laser-cooled relativistic C3+ ion beams at moderate bunching voltages. Schottky noise spectra measured at a beam energy of 122 MeV/u are compared to simulations of the axial beam dynamics. Ions confined in the bucket are addressed by the narrow-band force of a laser beam counter-propagating to the ion beam, while the laser frequency is detuned relatively to the cooling transition frequency in the rest frame of the bucket. At large detuning comparable to the momentum acceptance of the bucket, the axial dynamics can be well explained by the secular motion of individual non-interacting ions. At small detuning, corresponding to a small axial momentum spread Δpax…
Measurement of the branching fraction andΛ¯polarization inB0→Λ¯pπ−
2009
We present a measurement of the B0 --> Lambda-bar p pi- branching fraction performed using the BaBar detector at the PEP-II asymmetric e+e- collider. Based on a sample of 467 million BB-bar pairs we measure B(B0 --> Lambda-bar p pi-) = [3.07 pm 0.31 (stat.) pm 0.23 (syst.)] x 10^{-6}. The measured differential spectrum as a function of the dibaryon invariant mass m(Lambda p) shows a near-threshold enhancement similar to that observed in other baryonic B decays. We study the Lambda-bar polarization as a function of Lambda-bar energy in the B0 rest frame (E*_Lambda) and compare it with theoretical expectations of fully longitudinally right-polarized Lambda-bar at large E*_Lambda.
Relativistic nuclear structure. I. Nuclear matter.
1990
The formalism for the Dirac-Brueckner approach to the nuclear many-body problem is described including its basis in relativistic two-nucleon scattering. A family of relativistic meson-exchange potentials is constructed which (apart from the usual coupling terms for heavy mesons) apply the pseudovector (gradient) coupling for the interaction of pseudoscalar mesons (\ensuremath{\pi},\ensuremath{\eta}) with nucleons. These potentials describe low-energy two-nucleon scattering and the deuteron data accurately. Using these potentials, the properties of nuclear matter are calculated in the Dirac-Brueckner-Hartree-Fock approximation, in which the empirical nuclear matter saturation is explained qu…
Measurement ofB(B→Xsγ), theB→Xsγphoton energy spectrum, and the directCPasymmetry inB→Xs+dγdecays
2012
The photon spectrum in B → X_sγ decay, where X_s is any strange hadronic state, is studied using a data sample of (382.8±4.2) × 10^6 e^+e^- → Υ(4S) → BB events collected by the BABAR experiment at the PEP-II collider. The spectrum is used to measure the branching fraction B(B → X_sγ)=(3.21±0.15±0.29±0.08) × 10^(-4) and the first, second, and third moments ⟨E_γ⟩=2.267±0.019±0.032±0.003 GeV, ⟨(E_γ-⟨E_γ⟩)^2⟩=0.0484±0.0053±0.0077±0.0005 GeV^2, and ⟨(E_γ-⟨E_γ⟩)^3⟩=-0.0048±0.0011±0.0011±0.0004 GeV^3, for the range E_γ > 1.8 GeV, where E_γ is the photon energy in the B-meson rest frame. Results are also presented for narrower E_γ ranges. In addition, the direct CP asymmetry A_(CP)(B → X_(s+d)γ…
Transparency ratio in γA→η′A′ and the in-medium η′ width
2012
Abstract The photoproduction of η ′ -mesons off different nuclei has been measured with the CBELSA/TAPS detector system for incident photon energies between 1500–2200 MeV. The transparency ratio has been deduced and compared to theoretical calculations describing the propagation of η ′ -mesons in nuclei. The comparison indicates a width of the η ′ -meson of the order of Γ = 15 – 25 MeV at ρ = ρ 0 for an average momentum p η ′ = 1050 MeV / c , at which the η ′ -meson is produced in the nuclear rest frame. The inelastic η ′ N cross section is estimated to be 3–10 mb. Parameterizing the photoproduction cross section of η ′ -mesons by σ ( A ) = σ 0 A α , a value of α = 0.84 ± 0.03 has been dedu…
Complete angular analysis of polarized top quark decay atO(αs)
2002
We calculate the O(alpha_s) radiative corrections to the three spin independent and five spin dependent structure functions that describe the angular decay distribution in the decay of a polarized top quark into a W-boson (followed by the decay W^{+} -> l^{+} + nu_l or by W^{+} -> anti-q + q and a bottom quark. The angular decay distribution is described in cascade fashion, i.e. the decay t(uparrow) -> W^{+} + X_b is analyzed in the top rest system while the subsequent decay W^{+} -> l^{+} + nu_l (or W^{+} -> anti-q + q) is analyzed in the W rest frame. We present our results for the eight O(alpha_s) integrated structure functions in analytical form keeping the mass of the bottom quark fini…
Production of excited beauty states in Z decays
1996
A data sample of about 3.0 million hadronicZ decays collected by the ALEPH experiment at LEP in the years 1991 through 1994 is used to make an inclusive selection of B hadron events. In this event sample 4227±140±252B* mesons in the decayB*→Bγ and 1944±108±161B** u,d mesons decaying into a B meson and a charged pion are reconstructed. Here and in the followingB** u,d denotes the eightL=1(bū) and (bd) states and their charge conjugate. For the well establishedB* meson the following quantities are obtained:ΔM=M B*−MB=(45.30±0.35±0.87) MeV/c2 andN B*/(N B+N B*)=(77.1±2.6±7.0)%. The angular distribution of the photons in theB* rest frame is used to measure the relative contribution of longitudi…
