This paper reviews the composition of colostrum and the potential preventive and therapeutic use of this "first milk" for treating various gastrointestinal disorders in humans. Colostrum is a complex biological liquid that is richer in antimicrobial peptides, immune-regulating compounds and growth factors than the subsequent mature milk. We report genome-wide ancient DNA from 49 individuals forming four parallel time transects in Belize, Brazil, the Central Andes, and the Southern Cone, each dating to at least ∼9,000 years ago. The common ancestral population radiated rapidly from just one of the two early branches that contributed to Native Americans today. We document two previously unappreciated streams of gene flow between North and South America. Human noroviruses are responsible for most nonbacterial acute gastroenteritis cases. The GII.2, GII.4, and GII.17 genotypes of human noroviruses have recently arisen as the most frequent genotypes found in humans worldwide. We report here seven nearly complete genomes of these genotypes from patients with acute gastroenteritis in Valencia, Spain.

L1CAM gene mutations cause neurodevelopmental disorders collectively termed L1 syndrome. Insufficient information about L1CAM variants complicates clinical prognosis, genetic diagnosis and genetic counseling. We combined clinical data, in silico effect predictions and functional analysis of four L1CAM variants, p.I37N, p.T38M, p.M172I and p.D202Y, located to the two N-terminal Ig-like domains present in five families with symptoms of L1 syndrome. Software tools predicted destabilizing effects of p.I37N and p.D202Y but results for p.T38M and p.M172I were inconsistent. Abstract The K/HDEL receptor ERD2 mediates the transport of soluble endoplasmic reticulum (ER)-resident proteins containing a C-terminal K/HDEL signal from the Golgi apparatus back to the ER via COPI (COat Protein I)-coated vesicles. Sorting of ERD2 within COPI vesicles is facilitated by p24 proteins. In Arabidopsis , p24δ5 has been shown to interact directly with ERD2 via its luminal GOLD (GOLgi Dynamics) domain and with COPI proteins via its cytoplasmic C-terminal tail at the acidic pH of the Golgi apparatus.
