AUTOMATIC QUALITY ENHANCEMENT AND NERVE FIBRE LAYER ARTEFACTS REMOVAL IN RETINA FUNDUS IMAGES BY OFF AXIS IMAGING

2011

International audience; Retinal fundus images acquired with non-mydriatic digital fundus cameras are a versatile tool for the diagnosis of various retinal diseases. Even with relative ease of use, the images produced sometimes suffer from reflectance artefacts mainly due to the nerve fibre layer (NFL) or camera lens related reflections. We propose a technique that employs multiple fundus images to obtain a single higher quality image without these reflectance artefacts, which also compensates for a suboptimal illumination. The removal of bright artefacts, can have great benefits for the reduction of false positives in the detection of retinal lesions by automatic systems or manual inspectio…

A Measure of Concurrent Neural Firing Activity Based on Mutual Information

2021

Multiple methods have been developed in an attempt to quantify stimulus-induced neural coordination and to understand internal coordination of neuronal responses by examining the synchronization phenomena in neural discharge patterns. In this work we propose a novel approach to estimate the degree of concomitant firing between two neural units, based on a modified form of mutual information (MI) applied to a two-state representation of the firing activity. The binary profile of each single unit unfolds its discharge activity in time by decomposition into the state of neural quiescence/low activity and state of moderate firing/bursting. Then, the MI computed between the two binary streams is…

Steerable wavelet transform for atlas based retinal lesion segmentation

2013

International audience; Computer aided diagnosis and follow up can help in prevention and treatment of diabetes and its related complications. Screening of diabetes related disease in the eyes is done by a special low cost fundus camera. A follow up of the patients visiting at di fferent time intervals for screening brings us to the problem of image analysis for change detection and its cost per patient. It is very likely that human annotations for the lesions may be erroneous and often time consuming. Since the ethnic background plays a signi cant role in retinal pigment epithelium, visibility of the choroidal vasculature and overall retinal luminance in patients and retinal images, an eth…

Automated detection of microaneurysms using robust blob descriptors

2013

International audience; Microaneurysms (MAs) are among the first signs of diabetic retinopathy (DR) that can be seen as round dark-red structures in digital color fundus photographs of retina. In recent years, automated computer-aided detection and diagnosis (CAD) of MAs has attracted many researchers due to its low-cost and versatile nature. In this paper, the MA detection problem is modeled as finding interest points from a given image and several interest point descriptors are introduced and integrated with machine learning techniques to detect MAs. The proposed approach starts by applying a novel fundus image contrast enhancement technique using Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) of fun…

Transition from self tilt to object tilt during maintained lateral tilt in parabolic flight.

1991

Abstract 19 young healthy subjects were subjected to parabolic rollercoaster flight. A horizontal luminous line was seen by the subjects in a headfixed goggle device. During the hypergravic phases of parabolic flight the luminous line seemed to rotate into and during the hypogravic phase against the direction of static head tilt. Ocular counter rotation and activity of the neck position receptors cannot explain these subjective rotations. We conclude that information from the otolith system, converging with visual information within the brain, dislocated the headfixed visual target line. While the retinal image of the luminous line remains unchanged, loading and unloading the otoliths in pa…

Automatic Extraction of Blood Vessels, Bifurcations and End Points in the Retinal Vascular Tree

2008

In this paper we present an effective algorithm for automated extraction of the vascular tree in retinal images, including bifurcations, crossovers and end-points detection. Correct identification of these features in the ocular fundus helps the diagnosis of important systematic diseases, such as diabetes and hypertension. The pre-processing consists in artefacts removal based on anisotropic diffusion filter. Then a matched filter is applied to enhance blood vessels. The filter uses a full adaptive kernel because each vessel has a proper orientation and thickness. The kernel of the filter needs to be rotated for all possible directions. As a consequence, a suitable kernel has been designed …

Inhibition of DNA synthesis in chick embryo retinas, in vitro, by a factor from fetal bovine serum

1989

Fetal bovine serum inhibited deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) synthesis in chick embryo retina explants. The inhibitory activity was precipitated from fetal bovine serum by 45% saturated ammonium sulfate and isolated by means of Sephadex G-100 and Bio-Gel P-60 columns as a peak with an apparent molecular weight of 7000 Da. DNA-inhibiting activity was heat- and acid-stable and was destroyed by dithiothreitol and alkaline treatment. The purified factor inhibited similarly both DNA synthesis and thymidine kinase activity; 50% inhibitory effect was found with 160 ng, 17 h after the addition into the incubation medium.

The effects of glucocorticoids on thymidine kinase and nucleoside phosphotransferase during development of chicken embryo retina.

1983

AbstractThymidine kinase in chick embryo retina reaches its highest values on the 8–10th day of development, then declines reaching the lowest value at hatching. The rate of DNA synthesis essentially follows this activity while, in contrast, nucleoside phosphotransferase increases progressively during development. Glucocorticoids at 5 × 10−6M lower the level of thymidine kinase in isolated retinas of chick embryo. The most effective steroid was hydrocortisone. The effect was observed in retinas from 8–18-day-old chick embryo and, except on the 18th day, was always of the same magnitude. We suggest that a glucocorticoid can be the natural factor responsible for the marked fall in thymidine k…
