A Survey on Microaneurysms Detection in Color Fundus Images

2020

Early Detection of Microaneurysms (MA) plays a vital role in preventing the blindness caused by diabetic retinopathy (DR). DR is preventable yet a serious diabetic problem. Treatment at an earlier stage reduces the risk of blindness. Microaneurysm is the first sign of DR found in fundus images while doing screening. Detection of MA is a challenging task mainly because of its size. MA appears as a tiny red spot ranging from 15µm to 60µm size. The most common way to detect the MA from a colour fundus image is by classification/segmentation through machine learning and deep learning approaches. The FROC-based performance evaluation shows that the existing methods can reach only up to 80% of se…

Total retinal detachment caused by a KIF11 mutation.

2017

Purpose This is a case report of bilateral retinal detachment associated with KIF11 mutation. Methods In our university hospital, an 8-week-old patient presented with a potential bilateral congenital cataract, iris atrophy, and iridocorneal contact in the left eye. An examination revealed microcephaly and edema of the dorsa of the feet. The eye examination showed a clear lens in both eyes with a dislodged anterior chamber in the left eye with vessels drawn from the iris to the lens. A retrolental white bilateral mass with vessels was also observed. The MRI and the ultrasound revealed a potential peritoneal hyperplastic glass body. Bilateral retinal detachment was diagnosed during surgery. R…

Caractérisation des effets ophtalmiques du syndrome de Cohen chez des souris VPS13B-/- et identification des mécanismes moléculaires impliqué dans la…

2020

Cohen Syndrome (CS) is a rare autosomal recessive disease caused by variations in the gene coding for the vacuolar tri-vacuolar protein 13B (VPS13B or COH1). CS patients have common features including typical facial appearance, neutropenia, abnormal trunk fat distribution, microcephaly, myopia and retinal damage. My thesis project aimed to characterize the ophthalmologic phenotype of a mouse model Vps13bEx3/Ex3 to determine the molecular mechanisms involved in the development of CS retinopathy.First, we showed that Vps13bEx3/Ex3 mice develop a cataract between 2 and 3 months. Disorganization of the fibrous cells of the crystalline lens and their differentiation into mesenchymal cells were o…

Intravitreal pegaptanib sodium for refractory pseudophakic macular oedema.

2008

Evaluate the efficacy of intravitreal pegaptanib sodium (Macugen®) in refractory pseudophakic cystoid macular oedema (CME). Prospective, nonrandomized, interventional case series. Four eyes of four patients with refractory pseudophakic CME to pars plana vitrectomy and intravitreal bevacizumab and triamcinolone, were treated with pegaptanib sodium, with a mean follow up of 4 months. Pre- and postinfection examinations included assessment of best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) using the Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study chart (ETDRS), fluorescein angiography (FA), and optical coherence tomography (OCT). Visual acuity increased in all patients after intravitreal pegaptanib sodium. OCT…

Preoperative, Intraoperative and Postoperative Corticosteroid Use as an Adjunctive Treatment for Rhegmatogenous Retinal Detachment

2020

The treatment for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) is surgery, including pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) and scleral buckling (SB). Despite surgical advances, degeneration of the photoreceptors and post-operative complications, such as proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR), often occurs as the result of inflammation, preventing complete visual recovery or causing RRD recurrence. There is increasing evidence that in the presence of RRD, the activation of inflammatory processes occurs and the surgery itself induces an inflammatory response. This comprehensive review focuses on the use of different formulations of corticosteroids (CCS), as an adjunctive treatment to surgery, either PPV or S…

Pars-Plana-Vitrektomie bei diabetischen Traktionsamotiones mit Foramen

2000

PURPOSE: To evaluate results and prognostic factors of pars-plana vitrectomy (ppv) using membrane peeling and C2F6-gas for diabetic traction retinal detachments with a hole. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the healing course of 84 eyes, which were treated in this way consecutively (follow-up 6-32 month). C2F6 was always used in case of a retinal hole at the posterior pole or in the upper part of the eye. The influence of HBA1c, type of diabetes, preoperative visual acuity, preoperative laser-coagulation and macular status over treatment results and rate of complications were studied using multivariate logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: Preoperatively 56% of the eyes showed premacul…

An ultrastructural study on retinal neural and pigment epithelial cells in ovine neuronal ceroid-lipofuscinosis.

1990

Ovine neuronal ceroid-lipofuscinosis represents another well studied model for human neuronal ceroid-lipofuscinosis (NCL). Accumulation of abnormal lipopigments in various retinal neurons, and loss of photoreceptors are similar to the lesions in human juvenile NCL and indicate that the sheep is a suitable model in which to study the pathogenesis of both NCL lipopigment formation and retinopathia pigmentosa. However, this latter process is not as advanced in NCL-diseased sheep as in human patients but far more obvious than in canine NCL in which retinopathy cannot be unequivocally documented. Ovine NCL shares with canine NCL peculiar lamellar inclusions in retinal pigment epithelial cells wh…

Ultrastructural study of primary canine and human pigmentary retinopathy

1985

An electron microscopic study was performed on eyes of Labrador dogs afflicted with progressive retinal atrophy (PRA). There was complete loss of photoreceptors, atrophy of the remaining retina and gliosis in the peripheral part while the central retina showed incomplete loss of photoreceptors and an almost total disappearance of photoreceptor outer segments. Melanin-bearing cells, largely containing melanolysosomes, were found deep inside the retina. This electron microscopic study also incorporated the retina of a middle-aged woman affected by retinopathia pigmentosa (RP). The fine structure of the diseased retina showed a similar pattern of lesions, more pronounced in the periphery of th…

Validation of Automated Screening for Referable Diabetic Retinopathy With an Autonomous Diagnostic Artificial Intelligence System in a Spanish Popula…

2020

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to compare the diagnostic performance of an autonomous artificial intelligence (AI) system for the diagnosis of referable diabetic retinopathy (RDR) to manual grading by Spanish ophthalmologists. Methods: Subjects with type 1 and 2 diabetes participated in a diabetic retinopathy (DR) screening program in 2011 to 2012 in Valencia (Spain), and two images per eye were collected according to their standard protocol. Mydriatic drops were used in all patients. Retinal images—one disc and one fovea centered—were obtained under the Medical Research Ethics Committee approval and de-identified. Exams were graded by the autonomous AI system (IDx-DR, Coralville, Io…
