Spotlight on fundus autofluorescence.

2018

Fundus autofluorescence (FAF) imaging is based on the fluorescence from ocular endogenous fluorophores located in the retinal pigment epithelium and choroid, mainly lipofuscin and melanin. It is a noninvasive technique that provides information about the spatial distribution of lipofuscin/melanin and retinal pigment epithelium health status. An overview about the fluorophores responsible for FAF imaging and the usefulness of FAF imaging in the noninvasive assessment and monitoring of retinal diseases, such as age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, diabetic macular edema, central serous chorioretinopthy, retinitis pigmentosa and retinal dystrophies, are discussed in this rev…

Interferon löst okuläre Ischämien aus

2006

Background: Reports of interferon-associated retinopathy mainly originate from Japanese working groups. Only a few cases have been described in Europe. Patients and Methods: We have performed a retrospective analysis of the patients who were examined in the University Eye Clinic in Mainz complaining of visual loss associated with systemic interferon therapy in the time span between January 2001 and December 2003. Results: 12 patients (age 35-67 years), undergoing treatment with interferon alpha for hepatitis C, metastatic renal cell carcinoma, leukaemia and malignant melanoma of the skin, complained of blurred vision 2 - 10 weeks after the start of interferon therapy. Fundus examination rev…

Proteomics in ocular fluids

2007

The focus of this article is to review recent techniques in proteomic analysis of ocular fluids. These fluids include tears, aqueous humor, and vitreous, they will also be compared to serum analysis. Furthermore, we attempt to summarize some disease correlated biomarkers in ocular fluids that were discovered through different proteomic techniques in eye diseases like dry eye, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, uveitis, or diabetic retinopathy. This review is trying to point out the importance of these biomarkers for clinical applications.

Maintenance of anticoagulant and antiplatelet agents for patients undergoing vitreoretinal surgery

2010

International audience; Purpose: To establish the prevalence of anticoagulant, aspirin, and clopidogrel use in patients undergoing vitreoretinal surgery, and to compare the outcome of peribulbar anesthesia between users and non‐users. Methods: We conducted a retrospective case series in one academic center between January and June 2009. We analyzed the chart of 239 eyes who underwent posterior segment surgery with peribulbar anesthesia. No changes in the anticoagulant regimen were made prior to surgery. We divided patients into 7 groups: group 1: patients with no anticoagulants and 6 groups defined according to the type of anticoagulant or antiplatelet medication. Results: 239 eyes (206 pat…

Automated Detection of Microaneurysms Using Scale-Adapted Blob Analysis and Semi-Supervised Learning

2014

International audience; Despite several attempts, automated detection of microaneurysm (MA) from digital fundus images still remains to be an open issue. This is due to the subtle nature of MAs against the surrounding tissues. In this paper, the microaneurysm detection problem is modeled as finding interest regions or blobs from an image and an automatic local-scale selection technique is presented. Several scale-adapted region descriptors are then introduced to characterize these blob regions. A semi-supervised based learning approach, which requires few manually annotated learning examples, is also proposed to train a classifier to detect true MAs. The developed system is built using only…

Optical quality of hyperopic and myopic phakic intraocular lenses

2013

Aims: To assess and compare the optical quality of the myopic and hyperopic implantable collamer lens (ICL) from its wavefront aberrations for different powers and pupil diameters. Settings and Design: Prospective study. Material and Methods: The wavefront aberrations of two myopic (−3 and −6 diopters (D)) and two hyperopic V4b ICLs (+3 and +6D) were measured in vitro . To assess and compare the optical quality of different powers of ICLs, we analyzed the root mean square (RMS) of total higher order aberrations (HOAs), trefoil, coma, tetrafoil, secondary astigmatism, and spherical aberration at 3- and 4.5-mm pupil. In addition, the point spread functions (PSFs) of each ICL evaluated were ca…
