Delayed filling of retinal and ciliary circulation after central retinal artery occlusion

1988

The filling times of the retinal and choroidal circulation were evaluated in 17 patients with central retinal artery occlusion by means of fluorescein angiography. A correlation between the filling times of the two circulations was found. However, two filling patterns were seen: first, both fillings delayed; second, both fillings normal. It is probable that in the former case an obstructive disease of the carotid arteries exists, while in the latter case an important pathology of the carotid arteries is lacking, favouring a rapid restoration of the retinal circulation. This hypothesis seems to be confirmed by the results of the Doppler velocimetry of the carotid arteries.

Oxysterols: Influence on plasma membrane rafts microdomains and development of ocular diseases

2015

Oxidation of cholesterol into oxysterols is a major way of elimination of cholesterol from the liver and extrahepatic tissues, including the brain and the retina. Oxysterols are involved in various cellular processes. Numerous links have been established between oxysterols and several disorders such as neurodegenerative pathologies, retinopathies and atherosclerosis. Different components of the lipid layer such as sphingolipids, sterols and proteins participate to membrane fluidity and forme lipid rafts microdomains. Few data are available on the links between lipids rafts and oxysterols. The purpose of this review is to suggest the potential role of lipid rafts microdomains in the developm…

Ozone Therapy as treatment for severe cases without good evolution in ophthalmology [abstract]

2019

PURPOSE: In ophthalmology many diseases lead to irreversible blindness, something that implies millions of dollars in care because people with these difficulties loose their autonomy, becoming dependent in all their everyday activities.
This presentation will focus on clinical cases of the following pathologies treated with Ozone Therapy because all these were already being treated in a conventional way without signs of improvement. They are primary open-angle glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, occlusion of the central retinal artery, facial paralysis and herpetic polyneuropathy associated with orbital apex syndrome.

Exudates as Landmarks Identified through FCM Clustering in Retinal Images

2020

The aim of this work was to develop a method for the automatic identification of exudates, using an unsupervised clustering approach. The ability to classify each pixel as belonging to an eventual exudate, as a warning of disease, allows for the tracking of a patient&rsquo

Filter Bank: a Directional Approach for Retinal Vessel Segmentation

2017

It is well known that retinal diseases are sometimes identified by tortuosity of the vessels, presence of exudates and hemorrhages while lesions of tissues are associated to diabetic retinopathy, retinopathy of prematurity and more general cerebrovascular problems. One of the main issues in this research field is detecting small curvilinear structures, thus the aim of this contribution is to introduce a non-supervised and automated methodology to detect features such as curvilinear structures in retinal images. The core of the proposed methodology consists in using an approach that resembles the “a trous” wavelet algorithm. With respect to the standard Gabor analysis our methodology is base…

AUTOMATIC QUALITY ENHANCEMENT AND NERVE FIBRE LAYER ARTEFACTS REMOVAL IN RETINA FUNDUS IMAGES BY OFF AXIS IMAGING

2011

International audience; Retinal fundus images acquired with non-mydriatic digital fundus cameras are a versatile tool for the diagnosis of various retinal diseases. Even with relative ease of use, the images produced sometimes suffer from reflectance artefacts mainly due to the nerve fibre layer (NFL) or camera lens related reflections. We propose a technique that employs multiple fundus images to obtain a single higher quality image without these reflectance artefacts, which also compensates for a suboptimal illumination. The removal of bright artefacts, can have great benefits for the reduction of false positives in the detection of retinal lesions by automatic systems or manual inspectio…

Steerable wavelet transform for atlas based retinal lesion segmentation

2013

International audience; Computer aided diagnosis and follow up can help in prevention and treatment of diabetes and its related complications. Screening of diabetes related disease in the eyes is done by a special low cost fundus camera. A follow up of the patients visiting at di fferent time intervals for screening brings us to the problem of image analysis for change detection and its cost per patient. It is very likely that human annotations for the lesions may be erroneous and often time consuming. Since the ethnic background plays a signi cant role in retinal pigment epithelium, visibility of the choroidal vasculature and overall retinal luminance in patients and retinal images, an eth…

Automated detection of microaneurysms using robust blob descriptors

2013

International audience; Microaneurysms (MAs) are among the first signs of diabetic retinopathy (DR) that can be seen as round dark-red structures in digital color fundus photographs of retina. In recent years, automated computer-aided detection and diagnosis (CAD) of MAs has attracted many researchers due to its low-cost and versatile nature. In this paper, the MA detection problem is modeled as finding interest points from a given image and several interest point descriptors are introduced and integrated with machine learning techniques to detect MAs. The proposed approach starts by applying a novel fundus image contrast enhancement technique using Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) of fun…

Exudate-based diabetic macular edema detection in fundus images using publicly available datasets

2010

International audience; Diabetic macular edema (DME) is a common vision threatening complication of diabetic retinopathy. In a large scale screening environment DME can be assessed by detecting exudates (a type of bright lesions) in fundus images. In this work, we introduce a new methodology for diagnosis of DME using a novel set of features based on colour, wavelet decomposition and automatic lesion segmentation. These features are employed to train a classifier able to automatically diagnose DME through the presence of exudation. We present a new publicly available dataset with ground-truth data containing 169 patients from various ethnic groups and levels of DME. This and other two publi…
