Worldwide, radical retropubic prostatectomy is the commonest surgical procedure for treating localized prostate cancer. The technique has evolved continuously over the years, yielding improved continence and potency while reducing considerably the associated complications. Simple surgical ‘tricks’ have been proposed for crucial steps, e.g. the control of the dorsal venous complex, atraumatic dissection of the neurovascular bundles (NVBs), improved visualization of the urethral stump and tailoring of the vesicourethral anastomosis [1,2].

The Bcr/Abl kinase has been targeted for the treatment of chronic myelogenous leukaemia (CML) by imatinib mesylate. While imatinib has been extremely effective for chronic phase CML, blast crisis CML are often resistant. New therapeutic options are therefore needed for this fatal disease. Although more common in solid tumors, increased microvessel density was also reported in chronic myelogenous leukaemia and was associated with a significant increase of angiogenic factors, suggesting that vascularity in hematologic malignancies is a controlled process and may play a role in the leukaemogenic process thus representing an alternative therapeutic target. Endoscopic dissection of dura and craniotomy with minimal trephines: a preliminary series.

The first nine clinical cases using endoscopic dissection of dura and craniotomy with minimal trephines were performed from June to August 1997 after trial dissection of 19 fresh cadavers conducted at the University of Brno's Pathology Institute in the Czech Republic. These procedures involved the refinement of craniofacial and intracranial surgical techniques using the endoscope and prototype instruments. These dissections demonstrated that intracranial structures can be explored using an endoscope without encumbrance, and that major craniofacial surgeries may also be performed with minor incisions and minimal craniotomies. A non-ciliary muscle receptor organ in the first mandibular retractor muscle of Oncopeltus fasciatus is described. The organ consists of two specialized muscle fibres of the first retractor, which are embedded in a thickened layer of connective tissue. The sensory innervation is supplied by three multiterminal sense cells sending several dendrites to the receptor muscle fibres. ‘Naked’ dendritic terminals are attached to the muscle surface or connective tissue fibrils. Detrimental effects of acute and chronic alcohol (ethanol) consumption on human physiology are well documented in the literature. These adversely influence neural, metabolic, cardiovascular, and thermoregulatory functions. However, the side effects of ethanol consumption on hormonal fluctuations and subsequent related skeletal muscle alterations have received less attention and as such are not entirely understood. The focus of this review is to identify the side effects of ethanol consumption on the major hormones related to muscle metabolism and clarify how the hormonal profiles are altered by such consumption.

Background This study aimed to investigate the effects of a minimally invasive, flapless procedure to enhance tooth movement in both jaws and to determine whether this triggers the acceleration when repeated monthly.
