Satellite-derived land surface temperature: Current status and perspectives

2013

Abstract Land surface temperature (LST) is one of the key parameters in the physics of land surface processes from local through global scales. The importance of LST is being increasingly recognized and there is a strong interest in developing methodologies to measure LST from space. However, retrieving LST is still a challenging task since the LST retrieval problem is ill-posed. This paper reviews the current status of selected remote sensing algorithms for estimating LST from thermal infrared (TIR) data. A brief theoretical background of the subject is presented along with a survey of the algorithms employed for obtaining LST from space-based TIR measurements. The discussion focuses on TI…

An overview and issues of the sky radiometer technology and SKYNET

2020

Abstract. This paper overviews the progress in the sky radiometer technology and development of the network called SKYNET. It is found that the technology has produced useful on-site calibration methods, retrieval algorithms, and data analyses from the sky radiometer observation of aerosol, cloud, water vapor and ozone. Increasing collaborations of users in the SKYNET community are becoming a useful platform for research and operation. The paper also presents issues of the technology for future development.

An Integrated Architecture for Surveillance and Monitoring in an Archaeological Site

2005

This paper describes an on-going work aimed at designing and deploying a system for the surveillance and monitoring of an archaeological site, namely the "Valley of the Temples" in Agrigento, Italy. Given the relevance of the site from an artistical and historical point of view, it is important to protect the monuments from malicious or simply incautious behavior; however, the vastity of the area to be monitored and the vague definition of its boundaries make it unpractical to provide extensive coverage through traditional sensors or similar devices. We describe the design of an architecture for the surveillance of the site and for the monitoring of the visitors' behavior consisting in an i…

Shape matching, shape retrieval

2016

This thesis concerns shape matching and shape retrieval. It describes four contributions to thisdomain. The first is an improvement of the k-means method, in order to find the best partition ofvoxels inside a given shape ; these best partitions permit to match shapes using an optimal matchingin a bipartite graph. The second contribution is the fusion of two descriptors, one local, the otherglobal, with the product rule. The third contribution considers the complete graph, the vertices ofwhich are the shapes in the database and the query. Edges are labelled with several distances, one per descriptor. Then the method computes, with linear programming, the convex combinationof distances which m…

The influence of Elfreda Chatman's theories: a citation context analysis

2018

The range of theoretical frameworks currently being used by researchers into information behaviour is abundant and diverse. We need to examine thoroughly the contribution of theories and models to further research, as this would help to improve future investigations in the field. This paper adopts this approach, by thoroughly examining the influence that Elfreda Chatman's three middle-range theories have had on subsequent research. A citation context analysis was carried out on the basis of those received by Information poverty theory, life in the round theory and normative behaviour theory. Analysis covered the year of publication, the type of work and the subject-matter of the citing docu…

Mapping recent information behavior research: an analysis of co-authorship and cocitation networks

2015

There has been an increase in research published on information behavior in recent years, and this has been accompanied by an increase in its diversity and interaction with other fields, particularly information retrieval (HR). The aims of this study are to determine which researchers have contributed to producing the current body of knowledge on this subject, and to describe its intellectual basis. A bibliometric and network analysis was applied to authorship and co-authorship as well as citation and co-citation. According to these analyses, there is a small number of authors who can be considered to be the most productive and who publish regularly, and a large number of transient ones. Ot…

Res…

Regularization operators for natural images based on nonlinear perception models.

2006

Image restoration requires some a priori knowledge of the solution. Some of the conventional regularization techniques are based on the estimation of the power spectrum density. Simple statistical models for spectral estimation just take into account second-order relations between the pixels of the image. However, natural images exhibit additional features, such as particular relationships between local Fourier or wavelet transform coefficients. Biological visual systems have evolved to capture these relations. We propose the use of this biological behavior to build regularization operators as an alternative to simple statistical models. The results suggest that if the penalty operator take…

On Analytical vs . Schizophrenic Procedures for Computing Music

2009

The authors present a perspective on computer music, which is based on some particular definitions of music in relation to oral culture and cybernetics. They describe some experiments with different models of neural architectures which generate original music, and then suggest that if such neural systems are rich, effective and intuitive enough to produce ‘live’ music, the understanding of their behaviour may require the development of some ‘schizophrenic’ procedures, as well as analytical ones.

Non-linear System Identification with Composite Relevance Vector Machines

2007

Nonlinear system identification based on relevance vector machines (RVMs) has been traditionally addressed by stacking the input and/or output regressors and then performing standard RVM regression. This letter introduces a full family of composite kernels in order to integrate the input and output information in the mapping function efficiently and hence generalize the standard approach. An improved trade-off between accuracy and sparsity is obtained in several benchmark problems. Also, the RVM yields confidence intervals for the predictions, and it is less sensitive to free parameter selection. Teoría de la Señal y Comunicaciones
