Failure Rate, Marginal Bone Loss, and Pink Esthetic with Socket-Shield Technique for Immediate Dental Implant Placement in the Esthetic Zone. A Syste…

2021

Simple Summary The socket-shield technique has been proposed for preserving the bone ridge and surrounding soft tissues with immediate implantation in the extraction socket, maintaining the buccal wall fragment of the dental root. However, the socket-shield technique has not been compared with the conventional technique for immediate dental implant placement in the esthetic zone regarding the failure rate, marginal bone loss, and pink esthetic. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a systematic review and meta-analysis that provides evidence associated with the prognosis when using the socket-shield technique compared to the conventional technique. Abstract Aim: To compare the failure rate,…

Carga de comorbilidad y beneficio de la revascularización en ancianos con síndrome coronario agudo

2021

Introduction and objectives: To evaluate the interaction between comorbidity burden and the benefits of in-hospital revascularization in elderly patients with non-ST-segment elevation acute coronary syndrome (NSTEACS). Methods: This retrospective study included 7211 patients aged ≥ 70 years from 11 Spanish NSTEACS registries. Six comorbidities were evaluated: diabetes, peripheral artery disease, cerebrovascular disease, chronic pulmonary disease, renal failure, and anemia. A propensity score was estimated to enable an adjusted comparison of in-hospital revascularization and conservative management. The end point was 1-year all-cause mortality. Results: In total, 1090 patients (15%) died. Th…

Sublingual gland neoplasms: clinicopathological study of 8 cases

2021

Background Sublingual gland neoplasms are very rare and the majority of them are malignant. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical course, treatment, and outcomes of these uncommon neoplasms based on the authors’ experience and the recent literature. Material and Methods The medical charts of 8 patients with primary epithelial sublingual gland tumors treated between 1994 and 2020 were reviewed. Results Malignant tumors comprised 75% (6/8) of cases. Adenoid cystic carcinoma was the most common (50%, 3/6) and characterized by high risk of local recurrence and lung metastasis. Pleomorphic adenoma was the only representative of benign tumors with no evidence of local recurrence in f…

Tumors of the labial mucosa: a retrospective study of 1045 biopsies

2020

Background To investigate the relative frequency of localized mucosal swellings of the upper and lower labial mucosa, the clinical-pathological diagnosis agreement and whether patient’s age and gender and tumor’s site and size may raise the suspicion of neoplasm. Material and Methods Retrospective analysis was performed on upper or lower labial mucosal tumors, histopathologically diagnosed between 2009-2018. The diagnostic categories developmental/reactive tumors, benign and malignant neoplasms were associated with patient’s age and gender and tumor’s site and size; clinical-pathological diagnosis agreement was, also, evaluated. Results Overall, 1000 (95.7%) developmental/reactive tumors, 3…

Anti-Factor Xa levels correlate with recurrent venous thromboembolism and clinically relevant bleeding in patients receiving low-molecular-weight hep…

2019

Background: The aim of our study was to investigate whether anti-Xa levels assessed in selected groups of LMWH-treated patients with VTE correlate with the risk of developing thromboembolic or bleeding complications. Methods: Retrospective study, in adult patients treated with anti-Xa-adjusted LMWH analysing the association between anti-Xa activity and recurrent VTE or bleeding. Primary outcomes were symptomatic fatal or nonfatal objectively diagnosed VTE and clinically relevant bleeding (ISTH criteria). Results: From 2007-2017, 192 patients were recruited. Mean age was 62 (SD 18) years and 48% were men. Indications for anti-Xa monitoring were: VTE recurrence under anticoagulation (20.8%), …

THU0395 Adult Onset Still's Disease: A Multicenter Retrospective Cohort Study of 233 Italian Patients

2014

Background Adult onset Still9s disease (AOSD) is a rare rheumatic disease with an estimated prevalence of less than 1 case per 100,000 population. The diagnosis is difficult and is often delayed due to the lack of specific diagnostic tests and the need to rule out other pathological entities. Objectives To describe the clinical characteristics of a multicenter Italian case series of patients with AOSD. Methods 14 Italian University Hospital centers participated in the study. A standardized medical record containing clinical data, laboratory investigations, disease patterns and the different therapies has been sent to all participating centers. Each center collected data retrospectively. Res…

[Paediatric cochlear implantation in the critical period of the auditory pathway, our experience].

2009

Numerous experimental and clinical studies have suggested a critical or sensitive period in which the auditory pathway develops its greatest potential in terms of plasticity and learning. Early cochlear implantation performed in prelingual deaf children in this period provides a better prognosis for language acquisition. The aim of this study is to show the importance of cochlear implantation before this critical period ends.We conducted an observational, longitudinal, retrospective study of 57 children suffering profound prelingual bilateral sensorineural hearing loss who had received Advanced Bionics implants at our ENT department between June, 1998, and November, 2006. Data on their audi…

Postoperative maintenance therapy for inflammatory bowel disease.

2006

. Curr Opin Gastroenterol. 2006 Jul;22(4):377-81. Postoperative maintenance therapy for inflammatory bowel disease. Cottone M, Orlando A, Modesto I. Department of General Medicine, Pneumology and Nutrition Clinic, Palermo University, Palermo, Italy. PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review will highlight the knowledge gained from studies published in the year 2005 on maintenance treatment after surgery for inflammatory bowel diseases. RECENT FINDINGS: In Crohn's disease the role of smoking in increasing the risk of relapse and recurrence after surgery is confirmed. Ornidazole seems effective in reducing endoscopic recurrence and clinical relapse after surgery. Probiotics do not appear to be effective…

SELF-REPORTED 12-MONTH OVERUSE INJURY HISTORY IN YOUTH BASKETBALL AND FLOORBALL

2014

Background The popularity of organized sports, especially team sports is growing among youth. High training volume and intensity at early age may predispose young athletes to overuse injuries. Objective To examine the occurrence, nature and severity of overuse injuries in youth basketball and floorball. Design A descriptive retrospective study. Setting Finnish youth basketball and floorball. Participants: 406 athletes (mean age 15.9, SD 2.0) from six basketball and floorball clubs (210 basketball and 196 floorball players). Main outcome measurements Self-reported history of overuse injuries over the preceding 12-month period. Data was obtained from a questionnaire. The severity of injuries …
