Relative Prevalence of Different Androgen Excess Disorders in 950 Women Referred because of Clinical Hyperandrogenism

2006

Context: We undertook this study to estimate the prevalence of the various androgen excess disorders using the new criteria suggested for the diagnosis of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Setting: The study was performed at two endocrine departments at the University of Palermo (Palermo, Italy). Patients: The records of all patients referred between 1980 and 2004 for evaluation of clinical hyperandrogenism were reevaluated. All past diagnoses were reviewed using the actual diagnostic criteria. To be included in this study, the records of the patients had to present the following available data: clinical evaluation of hyperandrogenism, body weight and height, testosterone (T), free T, dehyd…

Relevance of the Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation-Specific Comorbidity Index (HCT-CI) On Non-Relapse Related Mortality (NRM) in Patients with Acute…

2009

Abstract Abstract 3352 Poster Board III-240 Allogeneic HSCT is established as a potent curative therapy in adult patients with high risk ALL. However, due to transplant-related morbidity and lethality the gains in relapse prevention do not necessarily translate into survival advantages in the overall patient population. Defining the role of allogeneic HSCT in ALL patients in first complete remission (CR1) according to leukemia related risk factors, to transplant related risk factors (e.g. HLA matching, conditioning therapy and immunosuppressive treatment), and to comorbidity related risks, remains a major task for upcoming clinical trials. Several retrospective studies suggest that the HCT-…

Prognostische Bedeutung des e-Cadherin beim papillären Schilddrüsencarcinom

1998

The prognostic significance of e-cadherin in papillary thyroid carcinoma was evaluated in a retrospective study. From September 1985 to December 1996, 113 patients underwent surgery for papillary thyroid carcinoma. Seventy-eight formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue samples were available for immunohistochemical analysis of e-cadherin expression. In 74 of these 78 patients the postoperative course is known for 2 months to 35.2 years (median 3.6 years, mean: 4.9 +/- 4.8 years). Reduced or negative e-cadherin expression ( 20%. Statistical analysis revealed e-cadherin expression ( 20%), synchronous distant metastasis (M0/pM1, cM1) and radicality of resection (R0/R1, 2) as significant risk f…

Our Assessment Using Palate Postoperative Problems Score (PPOPS): Tool for the Evaluation of Results in Palatal Surgery Techniques

2018

Obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome is a chronic condition characterized by frequent episodes of collapse of upper airways during sleep. Prevalence of the disease is settled at about 3–7%. Today, palatal surgery is a reference point in OSAHS treatment and there are many different surgical techniques. The purpose of our work is to compare post-operative results of palate surgery techniques used in our practice in OSAHS patients, studying the degree of patients’ satisfaction with a recent score recommended by Rashwan et al. called PPOPS (Palate Post-Operative Problems Score). A retrospective study was performed on a sample of 40 patients subject to different palate surgery techniques for OSAS. …

Early Mortality in Patients with Multiple Myeloma Treated with Novel Agents - Analysis from Polish Myeloma Study Group

2020

Background Although the introduction of novel agents improved the survival outcomes in patients with multiple myeloma (MM), some patients died within one year (early mortality, EM) following diagnosis. In this study, we evaluated the EM rate, and investigated the risk factors associated with EM in MM patients. Aims In this study we investigated risk factors associated with EM in MM patients initially treated with novel-agent containing regimen. Methods We conducted a multicenter (15 Polish sites) retrospective study a cohort of symptomatic MM pts diagnosed between October 2006 and November 2019 and living < 365 days (d) after diagnosis. All pts were dead at the time of the analysis. …

Ceftolozane/Tazobactam for Treatment of Severe ESBL-Producing

2020

Abstract Background Few data are reported in the literature about the outcome of patients with severe extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing Enterobacterales (ESBL-E) infections treated with ceftolozane/tazobactam (C/T), in empiric or definitive therapy. Methods A multicenter retrospective study was performed in Italy (June 2016–June 2019). Successful clinical outcome was defined as complete resolution of clinical signs/symptoms related to ESBL-E infection and lack of microbiological evidence of infection. The primary end point was to identify predictors of clinical failure of C/T therapy. Results C/T treatment was documented in 153 patients: pneumonia was the most common diagnosis (n = 46…

Evaluation of the Burden of HPV-Related Hospitalizations as a Useful Tool to Increase Awareness: 2007–2017 Data from the Sicilian Hospital Discharge …

2020

In light of the implementation of human papillomavirus (HPV) prevention strategies, epidemiological studies in different geographical areas are required in order to assess the impact of HPV-related diseases. The purpose of the present study was to describe the burden of HPV-related hospitalizations in Sicily. A retrospective observational study estimated 43,531 hospitalizations attributable to HPV from 2007 to 2017. During the observed period, there was a decrease for all HPV-related conditions with a higher reduction, among neoplasms, for cervical cancer (annual percent change (APC) = &minus

Management of Venous Thromboembolism (VTE) in Patients with Acute Leukemia: Results from a Multicenter Study

2014

Abstract Background In the last decades, evaluation of thrombotic complications secondary to acute leukemia (AL) has been poorly investigated. Only scant data are available on management and prevention of thrombosis in this setting. We performed a multicenter retrospective study with the aim to evaluate the management of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in patients with AL and to report the most commonly adopted regimens of treatment. Materials and methods Available clinical records of out and in-patients diagnosed with AL from January 2008 to June 2013 in 7 Reference Regional Hospitals were analyzed. Cases of VTE, including thrombosis in atypical sites [Retinal occlusion (RO) and Cerebral Sinu…

Causes and place of death in Italian patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis

2010

Objectives - To determine the causes and place of death in a cohort of Italian patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). A better understanding of the likely causes of death in ALS might improve the palliative care at the end-of-life, whereas knowing the place of death will help to verify the need for highly specialized care services, e.g. hospice and nursing home. Patients and methods - Between 2000 and 2008, 182 ALS patients (onset: spinal, 127; bulbar, 55; M/F: 1.6) were followed in a single ALS Tertiary Centre in Palermo, Sicily, Italy until death. Medical data for each individual patient were recorded in a large database throughout the disease course. Information concerning ca…

LOW BACK PAIN IN YOUNG TEAM SPORT PLAYERS: A RETROSPECTIVE STUDY

2014

Background Low back pain (LBP) is a common complaint in general population affecting both genders and almost all age-groups. LBP is a common problem in sports as well, even in younger populations. LBP is prone to recur, thus there is a need for studies on the early phases of the problem in different sports. Objective To investigate the prevalence, nature, severity and risk factors of self-reported LBP in young team sport players. Design A retrospective cross-sectional study. Setting Finnish female and male basketball, floorball, ice hockey and volleyball teams. Participants This study is a part of an ongoing cohort study exploring risk factors for sports injuries. Players from 22 teams, a t…
