The choice between retirement and bridge employment: a continuity theory and life course perspective.

2009

The rapid aging of the workforce in most developed countries, and the strengthening presence of bridge employment among older employees, has brought about a need for a deeper theoretical and practical understanding of this employment phenomenon. This study examined the concept of bridge employment from a continuity theory and life course perspective. Several personal and job-related antecedents of 539 middle-aged and older U.S. Federal Government employees' intentions of full retirement or engagement in bridge employment were investigated. A multinomial logistic regression analysis provided support for most of the hypotheses on the antecedents of full retirement and overall bridge employme…

RDW in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus. Influence of anaemia and inflammatory markers

2013

Red blood cell distribution width (RDW) is a routine parameter that reflects size variations in erythrocytes. High RDW has been associated with cardiovascular events and inflammatory diseases. However, no studies evaluating the association of RDW with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) have been published. We aimed to explore the association of RDW with inflammatory markers in SLE. As SLE is often associated with anaemia, we considered this factor in order to know whether RDW is related with inflammation, anaemia or both in SLE. The study included 105 SLE patients (7 men, 98 women; aged 15-73 years) and 105 controls (9 men, 96 women; aged 18-71 years). Patients were divided according to ana…

Vitamin B12 and hepatic enzyme serum levels correlate in male alcohol-dependent patients.

2001

- Vitamin B12 serum levels and markers for alcohol consumption were determined in 80 male alcohol-dependent patients. Spearman correlation coefficients (r(S)) were calculated. Significant positive correlations between vitamin B12 and hepatic enzyme values were found (gamma-glutamyltransferase: r(S) = 0.58; alanine aminotransferase: r(S) = 0.43; aspartate aminotransferase: r(S) = 0.47; glutamate dehydrogenase: r(S) = 0.43; all P:0.001). Therefore, for a proper interpretation of vitamin B12 levels, it may be clinically relevant to take markers of hepatocellular damage into account.

Impact Of Chronic Foot Pain Related Quality Of Life : A Retrospective Case-Control Study

2022

Clinical trial [Abstract] Background: Chronic foot pain (CFP) is a widespread condition worldwide; however, few studies that relate CFP and foot health-related quality of life have been reported. Objective: The aim of this study was to describe the impact of foot health and health in general in a sample of adult people with CFP compared with a control group. Study design: This study was designed as a retrospective case-control study. Setting: Podiatric section of a care center. Methods: Two hundred adults were included in the study. Patients were divided into CFP patient (n = 100) and control groups (n = 100). All of them regularly attended a private podiatric clinic to take care of their f…

Evolution of indeterminate hepatocellular nodules at Gd-EOB-DPTA-enhanced MRI in cirrhotic patients

2018

To retrospectively analyze the evolution of indeterminate hepatocellular nodules in cirrhotic patients on serial Gd-EOB-DPTA-enhanced MRI, and to identify predictors of HCC development. This IRB approved study included 33 cirrhotic patients with 69 indeterminate hepatocellular nodules (mean diameter 1.1 cm) at baseline Gd-EOB-DPTA-enhanced MRI and a Gd-EOB-DPTA-enhanced-MRI follow-up of at least 2 years. Two radiologists evaluated size and signal intensity of each nodule at baseline and follow-up. Age, cirrhosis etiology, and HCC history were recorded. Data were compared between nodules that became HCCs at follow-up (HCC) and those that did not (no-HCC). On follow-up, 5/69 nodules became HC…

Focal nodular hyperplasia: a weight-based, intraindividual comparison of gadobenate dimeglumine and gadoxetate disodium-enhanced MRI

2019

PURPOSE: We aimed to qualitatively and quantitatively compare the enhancement pattern of focal nodular hyperplasia after gadobenate dimeglumine and gadoxetate disodium injection in the same patient. METHODS: 1.5 T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examinations of 16 patients with 21 focal nodular hyperplasias studied after the injection of both contrast media were evaluated. Both MRI studies were performed in all patients. A qualitative analysis was performed evaluating each lesion in all phases. For quantitative analysis we calculated signal intensity ratio, lesion-to-liver contrast ratio and liver parenchyma signal intensity gain on hepatobiliary phase. Statistical analysis was performed w…

LI-RADS: Diagnostic Performance of Hepatobiliary Phase Hypointensity and Major Imaging Features of LR-3 and LR-4 Lesions Measuring 10-19 mm With Arte…

2019

OBJECTIVE. The purpose of this study was to determine the diagnostic performance of hepatobiliary phase hypointensity and Liver Imaging Reporting and Data System (LI-RADS) major imaging features in the diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in hepatic lesions with arterial phase hyperenhancement (APHE) measuring 10-19 mm in patients at high risk of HCC. MATERIALS AND METHODS. A composite reference standard of pathologic analysis and imaging follow-up was used. The diagnostic performance (sensitivity and specificity) of hepatobiliary phase hypointensity and LI-RADS major imaging features other than APHE for the diagnosis of HCC was assessed and compared by means of a logistic regression…

Enhancement pattern of hepatocellular adenoma (HCA) on MR imaging performed with Gd-EOB-DTPA versus other Gd-based contrast agents (GBCAs): An intrai…

2019

Purpose: To conduct an intraindividual comparison of the enhancement pattern of hepatocellular adenoma (HCA) on dynamic MRI study obtained following the injection of Gadoxetic acid (Gd-EOB-DTPA) and other gadolinium-based contrast agents (GBCAs).Method: This is a retrospective, Institutional Review Board-approved study conducted in a single institution. A search of medical records between 2008 and 2017 revealed 17 patients (all females) with at least one pathologically-proven HCA who underwent liver MRI with Gd-EOB-DTPA and another GBCA within 1 year. Enhancement of each lesion on hepatic arterial (HAP), portal venous (PVP), 2 min and 4-5 minutes phases was subjectively evaluated by two abd…

Gadoxetic acid-enhanced MRI of transient hepatic enhancement differences: Another cause of hypointense observation on hepatobiliary phase

2018

Purpose: To retrospectively determine the frequency, natural history and factors associated with the presence of transient hepatic enhancement difference showing hypointensity on hepatobiliary phase images of gadoxetic acid-enhanced MRI. Materials and methods: Gadoxetic acid-enhanced MRI of 125 patients (91 men; 34 women) with transient hepatic enhancement difference were retrospectively reviewed. Three readers qualitatively and quantitatively evaluated MR imaging features and evolution at follow up. The Chi-square test, Fisher's exact test and Kruskall-Wallis rank test were used for statistical analysis. Results: Transient hepatic enhancement difference were hypointense on hepatobiliary ph…

Solitary necrotic nodules of the liver: cross-sectional imaging findings and follow-up in nine patients.

2008

OBJECTIVE. The purpose of our study was to retrospectively evaluate the sonographic, CT, and MRI findings (number, diameter, lobar location, depth from the hepatic capsule, and appearance of lesions) in a series of nine patients with pathologically proven solitary necrotic nodules of the liver and the natural evolution at follow-up in four of the nine patients.CONCLUSION. Solitary necrotic nodules are usually small, solitary lesions, mainly located under the liver capsule of the right lobe. They are hypoechoic on sonography, hypoattenuating on CT, have low signal intensity on both T1- and T2-weighted MRI with lack of enhancement after IV contrast administration, and at follow-up have a tend…
