Visceral infiltration of intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma is most prognostic after curative resection - Retrospective cohort study of 102 consecutive …

2018

Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) is a rare malignancy, and therefore large unicenter series on the surgical outcome are rare in the literature, and prognostic factors for overall survival in the literature vary widely. All patients who underwent surgery for ICC were prospectively recorded. The type of resection, operative details, histological results, morbidity, mortality, overall and recurrence-free survivals as well as prognostic factors were assessed. Prognostic factors were examined by univariate and multivariate analyses. P-values0.05 were considered significant.Between January 2008 and December 2015, 102 patients underwent a resection with curative intent and were included in thi…

Staging of osteonecrosis of the jaw requires computed tomography for accurate definition of the extent of bony disease

2014

AbstractManagement of osteonecrosis of the jaw associated with antiresorptive agents is challenging, and outcomes are unpredictable. The severity of disease is the main guide to management, and can help to predict prognosis. Most available staging systems for osteonecrosis, including the widely-used American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS) system, classify severity on the basis of clinical and radiographic findings. However, clinical inspection and radiography are limited in their ability to identify the extent of necrotic bone disease compared with computed tomography (CT). We have organised a large multicentre retrospective study (known as MISSION) to investigate th…

Severe meningo-/encephalitis after daclizumab therapy for multiple sclerosis.

2019

Background: Daclizumab is a monoclonal antibody that binds the high-affinity interleukin-2 receptor and was approved for the treatment of relapsing multiple sclerosis. Due to severe inflammatory brain disorders, the approval was suspended in March 2018. Objective and Methods: This retrospective cohort study summarizes clinical, laboratory, radiological, and histological findings of seven patients who developed meningo-/encephalitis after daclizumab therapy. Results: Patients presented with encephalitis and/or meningitis and suffered from systemic symptoms such as fever (5/7), exanthema (5/7), or gastrointestinal symptoms (4/7). Secondary autoimmune diseases developed. Blood analysis reveale…

Italian cancer figures, report 2013: Multiple tumours

2013

This collaborative study, based on data collected by the network of Italian association of cancer registries (AIRTUM), provides updated estimates on the incidence risk of multiple primary cancer (MP). The objective is to highlight and quantify the bidirectional associations between different oncological diseases. The quantification of the excess or decreased risk of further cancers in cancer patients, in comparison with the general population, may contribute to understand the aetiology of cancer and to address clinical follow-up.Data herein presented were provided by AIRTUM population-based cancer registries, which cover nowadays 48% of the Italian population. This monograph utilizes the AI…

Outcomes after acute myocardial infarction in HIV-infected patients: analysis of data from a French nationwide hospital medical information database.

2013

Background— We aimed to assess in-hospital case fatality and 1-year prognosis in HIV-infected patients with acute myocardial infarction. Methods and Results— From the PMSI (Program de Medicalisation des Systèmes d’informatique) database, data from 277 303 consecutive acute myocardial infarction patients hospitalized from January 1, 2005, to December 31, 2009, were analyzed. Surviving patients were followed up for 1 year after discharge. HIV-infected patients were compared with uninfected patients. Among the cohort, HIV-infected patients (n=608) accounted for 0.22%. All-cause hospital and 1-year mortality rates were lower in the HIV-infected group than in uninfected patients (3.1% versus 8.…

Skull Bone Defects Reconstruction with Custom-Made Titanium Graft shaped with Electron Beam Melting Technology: Preliminary Experience in a Series of…

2017

Background: Cranioplasty represents a challenge in neurosurgery. Its goal is not only plastic reconstruction of the skull but also to restore and preserve cranial function, to improve cerebral hemodynamics, and to provide mechanical protection of the neural structures. The ideal material for the reconstructive procedures and the surgical timing are still controversial. Many alloplastic materials are available for performing cranioplasty and among these, titanium still represents a widely proven and accepted choice. Methods: The aim of our study was to present our preliminary experience with a “custom-made” cranioplasty, using electron beam melting (EBM) technology, in a series of ten patien…

Comparison of implant primary stability between maxillary edentulous ridges receiving intramembranous origin block grafts

2012

Purpose: The purposes of the present study were: to compare the resonance frequency analysis (RFA) values of implant placed in either ramus or calvaria block grafts; and to determine if implant diameter influences RFA implant stability quotient (ISQ) value. Material and Methods: This was a retrospective study that included 16 consecutives healthy patients treated with autogenous onlay block grafts for horizontal bone reconstruction in maxilla. Ten ramus and ten calvaria block graft treated patients were selected and compared. Results: Totally, 59 implants were placed, 35 (59.3%) were placed on the calvaria bone grafts and the remaining 24 (40.7%) were on the ramus bone graft. Of all the imp…

Tooth loss in Sjögren’s syndrome patients compared to age and gender matched controls

2018

Background To analyze the prevalence and location of tooth loss in Sjögren’s syndrome (SS) patients and compare them with an age- and gender-matched control group. Material and Methods Dental charts and x-rays of 108 (SS) patients were retrieved from an academic dental center and special care dentistry department. For each SS patient, an age- and gender-matched non-SS patient was randomly selected. Medication, number of extractions and date and location of extractions were assessed. Differences between SS and non-SS patients were analyzed using Mann-Whitney U tests, Chi-square tests and Fisher’s exact tests. Results Significantly more SS patients were edentulous compared to the non-SS group…

The effect of aberrations on objectively assessed image quality and depth of focus

2017

The effects of aberrations on image quality and the objectively assessed depth of focus (DoF) were studied. Aberrometry data from 80 young subjects with a range of refractive errors was used for computing the visual Strehl ratio based on the optical transfer function (VSOTF), and then, through-focus simulations were performed in order to calculate the objective DoF (using two different relative thresholds of 50% and 80%; and two different pupil diameters) and the image quality (the peak VSOTF). Both lower order astigmatism and higher order aberration (HOA) terms up to the fifth radial order were considered. The results revealed that, of the HOAs, the comatic terms (third and fifth order) ex…

Optical factors influencing the amplitude of accommodation

2017

AbstractThe purpose of this work was to find plausible predictors among optical parameters that may explain the inter-individual differences in subjective amplitude of accommodation not explained by age. An exploratory multivariable regression analysis was carried out retrospectively on a dataset with 180 eyes from 97 subjects (ages ranged from 20 to 58years). Subjective amplitudes of accommodation were recorded with the use of a custom-made Badal system. A commercial aberrometer was used to obtain each eye’s wavefront during the full range of accommodation. The plausible predictors under study were pupil diameter in the unaccommodated eye, its reduction with accommodation; fourth- and six-…
