Sex Differences in Severity of Stroke in the INSTRUCT Study: a Meta‐Analysis of Individual Participant Data

2018

Background Women have worse outcomes after stroke than men, and this may be partly explained by stroke severity. We examined factors contributing to sex differences in severity of acute stroke assessed by the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale. Methods and Results We pooled individual participant data with National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale assessment (N=6343) from 8 population‐based stroke incidence studies (1996–2014), forming part of INSTRUCT (International Stroke Outcomes Study). Information on sociodemographics, stroke‐related clinical factors, comorbidities, and pre‐stroke function were obtained. Within each study, relative risk regression using log‐binominal modeling…

<p>Clinical Evaluation of Everolimus in the Treatment of Neuroendocrine Tumors of the Lung: Patient Selection and Special Considerations. A Sys…

2020

Abstract Neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) of the lung are well-differentiated neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs) with a heterogeneous clinical behaviour. Unlike gastroenteropancreatic NENs where therapeutic armamentarium clearly increased over the last decade, everolimus represented the only clinical practical innovation for lung NET patients over the last years. Therefore, for lung NETs, a multidisciplinary discussion within a dedicated team remains critical for an adequate decision-making. Although the main regulatory authorities considered the everolimus-related evidence is enough to approve the drug in advanced lung NETs, several clinical features deserve to be discussed. In this review, we sy…

Pulmonary Embolism: Contemporary Medical Management and Future Perspectives

2018

Pulmonary embolism (PE) contributes substantially to the global disease burden. A key determinant of early adverse outcomes is the presence (and severity) of right ventricular dysfunction. Consequently, risk-adapted management strategies continue to evolve, tailoring acute treatment to the patients' clinical presentation, hemodynamic status, imaging and biochemical markers, and comorbidity. For subjects with hemodynamic instability or 'high-risk' PE, immediate systemic reperfusion treatment with intravenous thrombolysis is indicated; emerging approaches such as catheter-directed pharmacomechanical reperfusion might help to minimize the bleeding risk. Currently, direct, non-vitamin K-depende…

Outcome measurements following palatal soft tissue graft harvesting: A review

2021

Background Free gingival graft (FGG) and connective tissue graft (CTG) are two of the most commonly techniques performed in periodontal and peri-implant plastic surgery. Although several outcome measurements have been proposed for evaluation of palatal wound healing and patient morbidity, a comprehensive review about these variables is lacking. The objective of this review is to present comprehensive information about outcome measurements related to postoperative palatal wound healing and postoperative patient-reported morbidity after FGG or CTG procedures. Material and methods An electronic search of English language dental literature in the Medline database via PubMed access was conducted…

Ultra-low contrast coronary angiography and zero-contrast percutaneous coronary intervention for prevention of contrast-induced nephropathy: step-by-…

2019

Contrast-induced nephropathy is a serious complication after intravascular administration of iodinated contrast media and is associated with numerous adverse outcomes. Its prevalence is particularly high in patients with multiple comorbidities who undergo coronary angiography and percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Currently, the only effective method to prevent contrast-induced kidney injury is adequate hydration and a reduction of contrast volume during the intervention. Recently, new approaches aiming to minimize contrast usage have been proposed, i.e., ultra-low contrast angiography and zero-contrast PCI. However, neither tutorials for these techniques nor reviews of their outcome…

Alveolar distraction osteogenesis for dental implant treatments of the vertical bone atrophy : a systematic review

2019

Background To determine if alveolar vertical distraction osteogenesis obtains better results compared to other bone regeneration treatments (guided bone regeneration with membranes and / or filling material, or autogenous bone graft) in terms of bone gain, complications, and implant survival and success rates. Material and Methods An electronic search was performed in Pubmed (MEDLINE), Cochrane Library and Scopus databases in March 2017. Besides, a manual search was carried out. Inclusion criteria were randomized controlled trials published within the last 10 years with at least 1 year of follow-up after implant placement. No language restriction was applied. Exclusion criteria were studies…

Immunologic microenvironment and personalized treatment in multiple myeloma.

2013

Introduction: Multiple myeloma (MM) is characterized by generalized immune suppression and increased susceptibility to infections and secondary malignancies. Malignant plasma cells (PCs) modulate the bone marrow microenvironment to favor their own survival and proliferation. These events lead to a severe deregulation of immune effectors. Extensive studies have been conducted to unveil the mechanisms through which MM cells negatively modulate immunity and to develop therapeutical approaches for restoring an efficient anti-MM immune response. Areas covered: This review article covers both the immunosuppressive effects exerted by MM and the immunomodulatory potential of novel anti-MM agents. A…

The outcome of intraoral onlay block bone grafts on alveolar ridge augmentations: A systematic review

2015

Aim: The purpose of this study was to systematically review clinical studies examining the survival and success rates of implants placed with intraoral onlay autogenous bone grafts to answer the following question: do ridge augmentations procedures with intraoral onlay block bone grafts in conjunction with or prior to implant placement influence implant outcome when compared with a control group (guided bone regeneration, alveolar distraction, native bone or short dental implants.)? Material and Method: An electronic data banks and hand searching were used to find relevant articles on vertical and lateral augmentation procedures performed with intraoral onlay block bone grafts for dental im…

The impact of head and neck radiotherapy on the dentine-enamel junction: a systematic review

2019

Background Radiotherapy is widely used in contemporary head and neck cancer treatment protocols. The ability of head and neck radiotherapy (HNRT) to cause direct radiogenic destruction to the teeth is one of the most controversial topics in the field of oral oncology. Therefore, this systematic review aimed to investigate ionising radiation as an independent factor for physical and chemical changes on the dentine-enamel junction (DEJ), a pivotal dental topography for the onset and progression of radiation-related caries (RRC) and enamel delamination. Material and Methods Systematic searches were conducted on three databases: Scopus, MEDLINE (Via PubMed) and Embase (Elsevier). Laboratory stu…
