On the tribology and rheology of polymer brushes in good solvent conditions: a molecular dynamics study
2003
Tribological and rheological properties of two polymer brushes in relative sliding motion and good solvent conditions are investigated by means of molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The lateral forces between the brushes are found to decrease logarithmically with increasing relative sliding velocity v0 over a range of more than one decade in v0. We also observe an almost logarithmic relaxation of the end-to-end distance vector that occurs after sliding is stopped. The coincidence of these logarithmic dependencies support the picture that friction between polymer brushes is small due to the retraction of the polymers from the interpenetration zone. The shear stress relaxes almost instantly…
1986
The variation of the Huggins coefficient KH with the relative molecular mass M of the polymers was measured for solutions of polystyrene and of polyisobutylene and found to be most pronounced in the case of thermodynamically good solvents but vanishing at the theta-temperature, where the individual curves kH (T; M) intersect with each other. The experimental results are interpreted as a consequence of the rheological inequality of inter- and intra-molecular contacts between polymer segments. A model is presented according to which kH should be a linear function of M−(a−0,5), where a is the exponent of the intrinsic viscosity-relative molecular mass relationship (Kuhn-Mark-Houwink). The eval…
Experimental studies of the rheological behavior of a demixing biopolymeric sol
1995
Experimental data are presented concerning a large transient viscosity surge occurring in the course of spinodal demixing of agarose aqueous solutions. The study includes the effects of water perturbation by minor proportions of compatible cosolutes. Three observations are noteworthy. One concerns an upward or downward shift of the spinodal temperature, caused by cosolutes, which agrees with their expected modulation of solvent-induced forces. The second concerns the time of appearance of the viscosity surge. This is observed to follow a critical law, with an exponent independent of polymer concentration and solvent perturbation. The third concerns the inverse-power-law dependence of the vi…
Effect of small amounts of poly(lactic acid) on the recycling of poly(ethylene terephthalate) bottles
2011
Abstract Poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) is one of the most used commodity polymers, especially for food and beverage applications, and its recycling is of great importance because of the possible use in the textile and construction industries. On the other hand, the interest in biodegradable polymers has led, in recent years, to the use of materials such as poly(lactic acid) (PLA) also in the food and beverage industry. The presence of small amounts of PLA in the PET waste can significantly affect the post-consumer recycling process. In this work, the effect of the presence of small amounts of PLA on the recycling of PET bottles is investigated by rheological, mechanical, morphological …
1988
Poly(n-decyl methacrylate), a statistical copolymer of ethylene and propylene, and a diblock copolymer of styrene and hydrogenated butadiene were studied as representatives of various kinds of viscosity-index (VI) improvers. Essomarcol 52 and AF 1 from Schindler served as base-oils, toluene and 1-phenyl dodecane were also studied. By means of viscosity measurements in the temperature interval from 37.8 to 98.9°C up to a concentration of typically 1 wt.-% polymer, the viscosity indices of the different systems and the corresponding intrinsic viscosities, Huggins coefficients, and activation energies of flow, E≠, were determined. The discussion of the obtained experimental material demonstrat…
Research of the physical-chemical properties of adhesive radiation-modified thermosetting materials based on polyolefins and their composites
1999
The present paper surveys the investigation results of the adhesive behavior with steel of different polyethylenes (LDPE, HDPE) irradiated with γ-radiation in vacuum, oxygen, and air, using rheological, optical, thermomechanical and other methods. To study the adhesive contact, the technological parameters applicable to thermosetting polymer material were taken into consideration. The results show the suitable methods in order to obtain thermosetting polymer materials with improved adhesive and thermomechanical properties.
Preparation and Recycling of Plasticized PLA
2010
Poly(lacticacid)(PLA)hasbeengainingarisinginterestoverthe last years as a biodegradable and environmental-friendly substitute of traditional non-biodegradable poly-mers.Several ways exist to synthesize PLA, however, poly-merization through lactide formation is the most used onindustrial scale, allowing to obtain optimum results interms of mechanical and thermal properties.
Manufacturing, structure and properties of recycled polyethylene terephthalate /liquid crystal polymer/montmorillonite clay nanocomposites
2013
Polyethylene terephthalate (PET)/liquid crystal polymer (LCP)/monthmorillonite clay (MMT) compositions were obtained by melt mixing. Their mechanical, structural, rheological and thermal properties were investigated.
Temperature, fluid content and rheology of localized ductile shear zones in subsolidus cooling plutons
2020
Temperature and fluid content are critical parameters that control rock rheology and strain localization in the continental crust. Here, we determine by thermodynamic modelling the urn:x-wiley:02634929:media:jmg12553:jmg12553-math-0004 of localized ductile shearing during cooling of three different granitoid plutons: the Rieserferner and the Adamello plutons in the Italian Alps, and the Lake Edison pluton in the Sierra Nevada—USA. Shear zones exploited precursor joints, associated veins and alteration zones. urn:x-wiley:02634929:media:jmg12553:jmg12553-math-0005 and P−T phase diagram sections were computed with Perple_X in the system MnO−Na2O−CaO −K2O−FeO−MgO−Al2O3−SiO2−H2O−Fe2O3. The phase…
Rheological properties of thermal gels of pea and egg white protein mixtures
2021
International audience; Partial substitution of animal protein by plant protein is a new opportunity to produce sustainable food for human beings. However, separated studies of plant protein and egg white cannot help to have a direct understanding of the complex structure in a mixed food product. In this work, we used low-denatured pea globulins (PG) in admixture with raw egg white (EW) to study the thermal and rheological behavior of the mixed systems submitted to heat treatment (>G’’) for all the protein samples whatever the pH. Higher storage modulus (G’) values for egg white indicated stronger elastic behavior as for the mixtures. From strain sweep experiments, the addition of PG in the…
