On the rhythm of head movements in Finnish and Swedish Sign Language sentences

This paper investigates, with the help of computer-vision technology, the similarities and differences in the rhythm of the movements of the head in sentences in Finnish (FinSL) and Swedish Sign Language (SSL). The results show that the movement of the head in the two languages is often very similar: in both languages, the instances when the movement of the head changes direction were distributed similarly with regard to clause-boundaries, and the contours of the roll (tilting-like) motion of the head during the sentences were similar. Abstract Investigations on the regulation of pineal melatonin synthesis in the Syrian hamster revealed distinct differences compared to this well-understood mechanism in rat. E.g., a circadian profile of pineal norepinephrine (NE) is absent, there is no β-adrenoceptor sensitivity during daytime and adrenergic receptor supersensitivity is not easily achieved. The neuroendocrine nature of the pineal organ is well established. Linked to the optic system via postganglionic sympathetic fibres coming from the superior cervical ganglia, the parenchymal cells of the pineal synthesize serotonin from tryptophan and convert it to melatonin, the most widely studied pineal substance, and other indoleamines. Melatonin synthesis is stimulated by noradrenaline released from intrapineal sympathetic nerve fibres, involving β-adrenergic mechanisms and the adenyl cyclase-cAMP-system. In the migrainous brain, temporal processing of external stimuli and sequential recruitment of neuronal networks are often dysfunctional. These changes reflect complex CNS dysfunction patterns. Non-invasive localization of continuous atrial ectopic beats remains a cornerstone for the treatment of atrial arrhythmias. The lack of accurate tools to guide electrophysiologists leads to an increase in the recurrence rate of ablation procedures. Ventricular paired pacing to control intractable junctional tachycardia following open heart surgery in a child.

A 5-month-old girl presented postoperatively with an atrioventricular (A-V) junctional tachycardia at a rate of 245/min following surgical repair of tetralogy of Fallot. The systolic blood pressure dropped to 60 mmHg with this rapid heart rate, and the infant became shocked. Drugs and overdrive pacing were ineffective in suppressing the A-V junctional tachycardia and in improving cardiac output. Ventricular paired pacing was used successfully to halve the mechanically effective ventricular rate and to restore cardiac output.
