Optical Imaging and Spectroscopy of Atomically Precise Armchair Graphene Nanoribbons

We report the optical imaging and absorption spectroscopy on atomically precise armchair graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) on insulating fused silica substrates. This is achieved by controlling light polarization on macroscopically aligned GNRs which greatly enhances the optical contrast of the submonolayer GNRs on the insulating substrates. We measure the linear absorption spectra of 7-armchair and 9-armchair GNRs in this study, and the experimental data agree qualitatively with ab inito calculation results. The polarization spectroscopy technique enables an unambiguous optical identification of GNRs and provides a rapid tool to characterize the transferred film over a large area.

Current epidemiological data indicate that 16.9 million people suffer a stroke each year, which represents a global incidence of 258/100,000 year, with marked differences between high- and low-income countries, and an age-adjusted incidence 1.5 times higher in men than in women. Crystal structure, phase transitions and ferroelastic properties of [(CH3)2NH2]3[Bi2Cl9]

Abstract A sequence of structural phase transitions in [(CH3)2NH2]3[Bi2Cl9] (DMACB) is established on the basis of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and dilatometric studies. Four phase transitions are found: at 367/369, 340/341, 323/325 and 285/292 K (on cooling/heating). The crystal structure of DMACB is determined at 350 K. It crystallizes in monoclinic space group P21/n: a=8.062(2), b=21.810(4), c=14.072(3) A, β=92.63(3)°, Z=4, R1=0.0575, wR2=0.1486. The crystal is built of the double chain anions (“pleated ribbon structure”) and the dimethylammonium cations. Exploring the graphene edges with coherent electron focusing

We study theoretically the coherent electron focusing in graphene nanoribbons. Using semiclassical and numerical tight binding calculations we show that perfect armchair edges give rise to equidistant peaks in the focusing spectrum. In the case of zigzag edges at low magnetic fields one can also observe focusing peaks but with increasing magnetic field a more complex interference structure emerges in the spectrum. This difference in the spectra can be observed even if the zigzag edge undergoes structural reconstruction. Therefore transverse electron focusing can help in the identification and characterisation of the edge structure of graphene samples.

Syntheses and Characterizations of Functional Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons and Graphene Nanoribbons

In contrast to zero-bandgap graphene, nanostructures of graphene, such as graphene quantum dots (GQDs) and graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) have open bandgaps due to the quantum confinement effect, and are thus highly interesting for semiconductor applications, for example in nanoelectronics and optoelectronics. While conventional methods cannot provide GQDs and GNRs with chemically precise structures, large polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) molecules can be regarded as atomically precise GQDs. The main objective of knitters is to feed yarn to the knitting point at a low and uniform tension. PURPOSE Mutations in the dystrophin-associated glycoprotein complex (DGC) cause various forms of muscular dystrophy. These diseases are characterized by progressive loss of skeletal muscle tissue and by dysfunctions in the central nervous system (CNS). The CNS deficits include an altered electroretinogram, caused by an impaired synaptic transmission between photoreceptors and their postsynaptic target cells in the outer plexiform layer (OPL). AbstractThe human Usher syndrome (USH) is the most common form of combined deaf-blindness. Usher type I (USH1), the most severe form, is characterized by profound congenital deafness, constant vestibular dysfunction and prepubertal-onset of retinitis pigmentosa. Five corresponding genes of the six USH1 genes have been cloned so far. The USH1G gene encodes the SANS (scaffold protein containing ankyrin repeats and SAM domain) protein which consists of protein motifs known to mediate protein–protein interactions.
