Acquisition of Class C β-Lactamase PAC-1 by Sequence Type 644 Strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa

2019

Four sequence type 664 (ST664) (serotype O:5) strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa that were highly resistant to antibiotics, including ceftolozane-tazobactam and ceftazidime-avibactam, but were susceptible to colistin were found to harbor the gene encoding the rare class C β-lactamase PAC-1 on a chromosomally located Tn 1721 -like transposon. The bla PAC-1 gene was associated with the 16S rRNA methylase determinant rmtF2 , which confers pan-aminoglycoside resistance.

Polyphasic taxonomy of a novel yeast isolated from antarctic environment; description of Cryptococcus victoriae sp. nov.

1999

In 1992 some samples of mosses, lichens and soils were collected from Botany Bay, Southern Victoria Land (77 degrees 01' S 162 degrees 32' E) and, as a result of a routine screening programme some yeasts were isolated. One of them, designated as strain G5, showed marked differences when compared to other antarctic yeasts. According to morphological and physiological characteristics, we were able to identify the strain G5 as a yeast belonging to the genus Cryptococcus. Some characteristics of this genus are the growth response to myo-inositol, celobiose, raffinose and D-glucuronate, no-fermentation, the absence of mycelium and pseudomycelium, asexual reproduction, Diazolium blue B test (DBB)…

Phylogenetic relationships among Flavescence doree strains and related phytoplasmas determined by heteroduplex mobility assay and sequence of ribosom…

2003

Heteroduplex mobility assay (HMA) and DNA sequencing were performed on Flavescence doree (FD) phytoplasma strains and related phytoplasmas belonging to the elm yellows group. Part of the ribosomal RNA gene operon and a nonribosomal DNA region were utilized for phylogenetic analyses. Two FD strains, FD92 and FD-D, detected in France and Italy, respectively, were identical in both DNA fragments, confirming previous results. Other FD strains were all very similar and most closely resembled ALY, an Italian alder phytoplasma. Phytoplasmas associated with German Palatinate grapevine yellows were shown to form a distinct subcluster, also different from the elm yellows phytoplasma subcluster. Strai…

Myosporidium ladogensis n. comb. in burbot Lota lota from Finland: fine structure and microsporidian taxonomy.

2020

Infections with microsporidian parasites are described in skeletal muscle of burbot Lota lota from Lake Haukivesi, Finland. Infected myocytes contained spores within sporophorous vesicles (SPVs) in contact with host cell cytoplasm, similar to Pleistophora ladogensis in L. lota and smelt Osmerus eperlanus in western Russia and northern Germany. Analysis of small subunit ribosomal RNA (SSU rRNA) gene sequences indicated identity with Myosporidium spraguei in burbot and pike-perch from this lake. The latter is considered a junior synonym of P. ladogensis. Phylogenetic analysis of SSU rRNA sequences resolved the burbot parasite apart from a clade containing the type species P. typicalis, but to…

NOR regions of polychaete worms of the genus Ophryotrocha studied by chromosome banding techniques and FISH.

2000

This article reports the results of cytogenetic analyses carried out on 10 species of polychaete worms belonging to the genus Ophryotrocha (Dorvilleidae). Nucleolar organizer regions (NORs) were characterized by Ag staining, C-banding, CMA3 staining, and ribosomal fluorescent in situ hybridization (rDNA FISH). Extensive intraspecific variation in NOR number and distribution were observed in O. costlowi, O. sp. macrovifera, O. notoglandulata, O.l. labronica, O. l. pacifica (2n = 6), O. p. puerilis, O. diadema (2n = 8), O. hartmanni, O. gracilis (2n = 10). In O. sp. robusta (2n = 10), Ag-NORs were always located on a single chromosome pair. CMA3 staining suggests a possible trend toward a GC-…

Non-coding RNAs at the Eukaryotic rDNA Locus: RNA–DNA Hybrids and Beyond

2019

The human ribosomal DNA (rDNA) locus encodes a variety of long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs). Among them, the canonical ribosomal RNAs that are the catalytic components of the ribosomes, as well as regulatory lncRNAs including promoter-associated RNAs (pRNA), stress-induced promoter and pre-rRNA antisense RNAs (PAPAS), and different intergenic spacer derived lncRNA species (IGSRNA). In addition, externally encoded lncRNAs are imported into the nucleolus, which orchestrate the complex regulation of the nucleolar state in normal and stress conditions via a plethora of molecular mechanisms. This review focuses on the triplex and R-loop formation aspects of lncRNAs at the rDNA locus in yeast and hu…

AMPLIFIED RIBOSOMAL DNA RESTRICTION ANALYSIS (ARDRA) BAKTERI DENGAN POTENSI ANTIMIKROB YANG BERASOSIASI DENGAN SPONS Jaspis sp.

2010

<p><em>Sponges</em><em> are one of the components that compose coral reef which have a potential bioactive substance that has not been utilized. Sponges are generally able to survive in marine waters were nutrients are poor because of associations with other organisms, especially bacteria. This study aimed to isolate and characterize bacteria (endosymbiont and ectosimbion) that produce antimicrobial compounds, and analyze genetic diversity based on Amplified Ribosomal DNA Restriction Analysis (ARDRA). The results of isolation obtained 138 bacterial isolates, which are 70 endofit isolates and 68 surfaces isolates respectively. The results obtained, based on antimicrob…

ITS region of the rDNA of Pythium rhizosaccharum sp. nov. isolated from sugarcane roots: taxonomy and comparison with related species.

2003

Pythium rhizosaccharum (F-1244) was isolated from soil samples taken in the rhizosphere of sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum) in the north-eastern India. This species is characterized by its smooth-walled, spherical sporangia and rarely formed sexual structures. When formed, the antheridial branches wrap around the oogonia and soon disappear after fertilization. The internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of its rDNA is comprised of 904 bases. The taxonomical description of this new species and its comparison with related species are given here, together with the nucleotide sequences of the ITS1 and ITS2, and the 5.8S gene of its ribosomal nuclear DNA.

Evidence for a symbiosis between bacteria of the genus Rhodobacter and the marine sponge Halichondria panicea  : harbor also for putatively toxic bac…

1998

Halichondria panicea (Pallas) is a marine sponge, abundantly occurring in the Adriatic sea, North sea and Baltic sea. It was the aim of the present study to investigate if this sponge species harbors bacteria. Cross sections through H. panicea were taken and inspected by electron microscopy. The micrographs showed that this sponge species is colonized by bacteria in its mesohyl compartment. To identify the bacteria, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis of the 16S rRNA gene segment, typical for bacteria, was performed. DNA was isolated from sponge material that had been collected near Rovinj (Adriatic Sea), Helgoland (North Sea), and Kiel (Baltic Sea) and was amplified with bacterial pri…
