Effects of thrombin and of the phospholipase C inhibitor, D609, on the vascularity of the chick chorioallantoic membrane.

2000

Abstract Microvascular corrosion casting was used to assess the effects of thrombin and D609, a phospholipase C inhibitor, on the vascularity of the chick embryo chorioallantoic membrane (CAM). Discs containing vehicle, thrombin or D609 were placed on the CAM of fertilized white Leghorn eggs on Day 9 of gestation and vascularity was assessed on Day 11. Thrombin caused significant increases in the numbers (43%), diameters (5%) and lengths (17%), of both pre- and postcapillaries (first-order vessels by centripetal ordering). Conversely, D609 caused a decrease in the numbers (27%), lengths (12%) and diameters (8%) of first-order vessels. D609 decreased the total vascular volume of first- to th…

Ponti di Sicilia (XVI-XIX secolo). Catalogo della mostra

2015

Case-studies of corroded reinforced concrete bridges in Southern Italy

2020

On Italian roads, a lot of reinforced concrete bridges were built in the 1950’s and 1960’s for short spans, before the advent of prefabricated structures. Many of these bridges, sited on principal or secondary roadways, show the effects of corrosion of reinforcements and high levels of damage, leading to the likelihood of achievement of the Ultimate Limit State, below the required performances of serviceability, especially in the case of Gerber saddles having strongly corroded reinforcements. Different case studies of bridges sited in Southern Italy (Sicily) are shown, allowing engineers to classify the main effects of damage in corroded structures with the Gerber static scheme (cantilever …

β-Catenin Signaling Drives Differentiation and Proinflammatory Function of IRF8-Dependent Dendritic Cells

2014

Abstract β-Catenin signaling has recently been tied to the emergence of tolerogenic dendritic cells (DCs). In this article, we demonstrate a novel role for β-catenin in directing DC subset development through IFN regulatory factor 8 (IRF8) activation. We found that splenic DC precursors express β-catenin, and DCs from mice with CD11c-specific constitutive β-catenin activation upregulated IRF8 through targeting of the Irf8 promoter, leading to in vivo expansion of IRF8-dependent CD8α+, plasmacytoid, and CD103+CD11b− DCs. β-Catenin–stabilized CD8α+ DCs secreted elevated IL-12 upon in vitro microbial stimulation, and pharmacological β-catenin inhibition blocked this response in wild-type cells…

Concrete arch bridges built by lattice cantilevers

2013

In this paper a study about concrete arch bridges built by lattice cantilevers is presented. Lattice cantilevers are partial structures composed of deck, arch, piers and provisional steel diagonals, organized as reticular cantilever girders, in order to build arch bridges without the use of centrings, supports or temporary towers. Characteristics of this construction methodology with its variants are explained together with their implications in the erection sequence. Partial elastic scheme method is implemented in order to find initial forces of temporary cables and a forward analysis is carried out to follow the actual sequence of construction, by extending a procedure already applied to …

Spunti di racconto in alcuni «Carmina Cantabrigiensia»

2015

The «Cambridge Songs» («Carmina Cantabrigiensia») are a collection of short Latin poems which we find in the lone manuscript Gg. 35 (Ca), housed in the Cambridge University Library. The manuscript itself was produced at the monastery of St. Augustine in Canterbury, in the middle of the XIth century, just before the Norman invasion of England. The best part of the poems of the «Cambridge Songs» probably derives from Germany and belongs to a period between IXth and XIth centuries. The 84 poems of the collection display a diversity of form, content and function. We can extricate praise poetry for kings and bishops, erotic verses, nature poems, and other sort of writing less easily classified. …

‘The Glossary in ms. Cambridge, St John’s College E.17 and Middle English Lexicography’,

2015

The only bilingual item of MS Cambridge, St John’s College, E.17 is a short glossary with French lemmata and English interpretamenta, copied in the upper part of f. 126r. The Middle English entries feature a number of rare words, including a few hapax legomena. In other instances, that of the St John’s glossary is the first occurrence of the word ever attested in Middle English. Hence, the little studied glossary reveals itself to be a treasure-trove for the lexicographer. Moreover, whereas the number of borrowings from French is limited to two words, the glossary contains several loanwords from Old Norse. This feature might help locate the glossary, whose origin, as well as that of the ent…

Pharmacologic activation of p53 elicits Bax-dependent apoptosis in the absence of transcription

2003

AbstractRecent efforts to develop pharmacologic agents that restore function to mutant forms of p53 hold significant promise in cancer therapy. Here, we examine the effects of such pharmacologic activation of p53 function using a small molecule, PRIMA-1, and a model system employing a p53 protein fused to a mutant steroid binding domain of the murine estrogen receptor (p53ERtam) that renders it responsive only in the presence of 4-hydroxytamoxifen. In either case, p53 activation triggered apoptosis that was not inhibited by the presence of macromolecular synthesis inhibitors. This p53-induced, transcription-independent apoptosis is Bax dependent, proceeds in the absence of a nucleus, and in…

Construction sequence analysis of long-span cable-stayed bridges

2018

Abstract In cantilever construction of long-span cable-stayed bridges the stressing sequence of stays is fundamental for establishing the final configuration of the bridge. The structural behaviour of these bridges is usually evaluated through a forward staged construction analysis, in which the values of the prestressing forces to be applied to stays are the main unknowns. A unified procedure for determining the initial cable forces and for analyzing the entire sequence is presented here, considering the geometric nonlinearity of stays through the Dischinger equivalent elastic modulus. The target is the simultaneous determination of the initial cable forces with the simulation of the const…
