Construction stages of cable-stayed bridges with composite deck

2012

A cable-stayed bridge is built by following a construction sequence of different subsequent stages that imply changes of the geometric configuration, restraints and consequently stress and strain patterns. A study is presented about stay stressing sequences in cable-stayed bridges with composite deck for the case of construction made by the cantilever method. Initial cable forces are found through partial elastic schemes of construction stages. Different stay stressing procedures are implemented and a comparison between them is proposed in order to evaluate the differences in terms of deformed shape and internal force distribution of the deck and the pylon. Results can be useful to give pra…

The land bridge between Europe and Sicily over the past 40 kyrs: Timing of emersion and implications for the migration of Homo sapiens

2012

The submerged Sill in the Messina Strait, which is located at a depth of -81 m m.s.l., represents the only possibile connection between Calabria and Sicily during the last lowstand, when the sea level was at about -126 m m.s.l. This multidisciplinary research aim at documenting times and modes the bridge between Calabria and Sicily was emerged, during the last 40 ka BP. The analysis carried out on morphobathymetric, lithological and relative sea level change (both isostatic and tectonic) data allow to hypothesize the continental bridge emerged at least between 21.5 ka and 20 ka cal BP. Moreover, considering erosion processes due to very strong marine currents, it could be emerged for a long…

Assessment and strengthening of reinforced concrete bridges with half-joint deterioration

2022

Existing Niagara-type concrete cantilever bridges, which in Italy are called Gerber bridges, suffer from degradation due to reinforcement corrosion and a consequent reduced load-bearing capacity. The assessment of these structures is therefore an important part of the procedures for analyzing the state of existing bridges and any interventions required for their retrofitting. In particular, safety against failure of the half-joint must be evaluated with respect to the behavior of the entire bridge and its state of conservation, determining what the conditions are that lead to failure, in terms of loads, state of stress, and possibly cracking state. This evaluation has to be carried out cons…

Crystal structure of tricarbonyl(μ-diphenylphosphido-κ2P:P)(methyldiphenylsilyl-κSi)bis(triphenylphosphane-κP)iron(II)platinum(0)(Fe—Pt)

2015

The title compound belongs to the large family of heterodinuclear phosphide-bridged complexes. The Fe—Pt bond is of 2.7738 (4) Å and there is an unprecedented arrangement of the silyl ligand in a trans-position with respect to the metal–metal vector in the family of phosphide-bridged iron–platinum heterobimetallics.

Habitat Determinants and Density of the Endemic Sicilian Rock Partridge Alectoris graeca whitakeri on Mt. Etna, Sicily, Italy

2022

The assessment of the conservation status of a species is the first step to prevent local extinction and to plan appropriate, effective and scientifically sound conservation actions, hence knowledge of the distribution, population trends and characteristics of preferred habitat is crucial for the conservation of a species. Galliformes are facing increasing threats related to overhunting, habitat loss and fragmentation, and human disturbance. The Sicilian Rock Partridge (hereafter Rock Partridge) Alectoris graeca whitakeri is a significant conservation unit endemic to Sicily (Italy) classified as Near Threatened by the IUCN due to a decreasing population. Few studies have been conducted on t…

Extensive nuclear gyration and pervasive non-genic transcription during primordial germ cell development in zebrafish.

2020

ABSTRACT Primordial germ cells (PGCs) are the precursors of germ cells, which migrate to the genital ridge during early development. Relatively little is known about PGCs after their migration. We studied this post-migratory stage using microscopy and sequencing techniques, and found that many PGC-specific genes, including genes known to induce PGC fate in the mouse, are only activated several days after migration. At this same time point, PGC nuclei become extremely gyrated, displaying general broad opening of chromatin and high levels of intergenic transcription. This is accompanied by changes in nuage morphology, expression of large loci (PGC-expressed non-coding RNA loci, PERLs) that ar…

The Measurement of Large Strains Using Electrical Resistance Strain Gages

2011

It is well known that in the range of large strains, the electrical resistance strain gages have a nonlinear behavior, that is the variation of electrical resistance is a nonlinear function of the strain applied to the strain gage, which means that the gage factor K is not constant. Also, the Wheatstone bridge has a nonlinear behavior at large strains. Usually the two nonlinearities have opposite effects, therefore the overall nonlinearity decreases. This article presents an overview of the behavior of strain gages subject to large strains and of the corrections to account for nonlinearities of both the strain gage and the Wheatstone bridge.

On the use of unmanned aerial systems for environmental monitoring

2018

[EN] Environmental monitoring plays a central role in diagnosing climate and management impacts on natural and agricultural systems; enhancing the understanding of hydrological processes; optimizing the allocation and distribution of water resources; and assessing, forecasting, and even preventing natural disasters. Nowadays, most monitoring and data collection systems are based upon a combination of ground-based measurements, manned airborne sensors, and satellite observations. These data are utilized in describing both small-and large-scale processes, but have spatiotemporal constraints inherent to each respective collection system. Bridging the unique spatial and temporal divides that li…

Grain boundary ridges slow dawn grain boundary motion: In-situ observation

2014

Abstract The impact of grain boundary (GB) ridge on motion of high-angle GB in Zn was studied. The steady-state motion of faceted GB half-loop with [ 10 1 ¯ 0 ] tilt GB and GB ridge was recorded in-situ. The temperatures of faceting–roughening transition were experimentally defined for three GB half-loops. Above the transition temperature GB half-loops had GB “rough-to-rough” ridge with continuously curved GB segments. Below the transition temperature a facet appeared and coexisted with two “facet-to-rough” ridges. For the first time we could extract mobility of “rough-to-rough” and “rough-to-facet” ridges and bring out clearly that GB ridge slows down GB motion. Present removes contradicti…

The Foundation Seamount Chain: A first survey and sampling

1997

The Foundation Seamounts form a 1400 km-long chain on the Pacific plate from 32 °S, 127 °W to the Pacific-Antarctic spreading axis at 38 °S, 111 °W. Previously only known from sparse single-beam echosoundings and satellite altimetry, we present here the first multibeam bathymetric survey and geological sampling results. We confirm that the submarine topography correlates with the altimetry, and that the chain is volcanic rather than tectonic or microcontinental in origin. The chain can be divided up morphologically and geochemically into three section: (1) west of 125 °W large flat-topped volcanoes composed of incompatible-element depleted lavas ( ≈ 1) of a near-ridge origin with little or …
