Piriform Cortex and Amygdala
2012
Publisher Summary A ventral view of the cerebral hemispheres of mammals shows an array of structures ultimately connected with the olfactory bulbs through the olfactory tracts. This is the basis for the old concept of rhinencephalon, a series of neural centers in the cerebral hemispheres, located ventral to the rhinal fissure, for which an olfactory role was assumed. Although mice lack a conspicuous rhinal fissure, their “rhinencephalon” is well developed. The concept of the rhinencephalon is difficult to sustain nowadays, as it includes neural centers of diverse origin, organization and nature. The rhinencephalon comprises several allocortical areas that constitute the olfactory cortex, de…
Ložņu āboliņa (Trifolium repens L.) Eiropas populāciju ģenētiskās daudzveidības salīdzinājums
2021
Analiz…
2021
The Author describes how the Italian National Plan for Recovery and Resilience approaches the issue of reforms of the Judicial System. The article dedicates wide attention to the reforms of the High Council of the Judiciary and of the rules of the judiciary, stressing their potentials and showing that tones and contents of the political debate could hinder the reforming path.
Clutch size and egg volume in great tits (Parus major) increase under low intensity electromagnetic fields: a long-term field study.
2012
Exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMFs) can affect a wide range of biological processes, including reproduction, growth and development. Experiments aimed at investigating the biological effects of EMFs, focused on potential harmful effects on humans, have been mostly carried out in vitro or with animal models in laboratory conditions. By contrast, studies performed on wild animals are scarce. The effects of EMFs created by an electric power line on reproductive traits of a wild great tit (Parus major) population were explored by analysing data gathered during nine breeding seasons. EMF exposure significantly increased clutch size (7%) and egg volume (3%), implying a 10% increase in clutc…
Co-mimics have a mutualistic relationship despite unequal defences
2007
Defensive mimicry, where species have evolved to resemble others in order to evade predators, is quite common in the animal kingdom. The two extremes of the mimicry spectrum are known as 'batesian' and 'mullerian'. Batesian mimics develop signals — visual cues for instance — that are similar to those of species being mimicked, but stop short of adopting the attribute that makes it unprofitable prey to predators. Mullerian mimics both resemble the model species and share the anti-predation attribute — by being dangerous or unpalatable. These different types of mimic were identified a century ago, but the dynamics of mimicry between unequally defended prey remain unresolved. In an experiment …
Migration of monocytes after intracerebral injection at entorhinal cortex lesion site.
2012
Abstract After axonal lesion in the CNS, intracerebrally injected green fluorescent monocytes migrate through the cribroid plate and subsequently accumulate in deep cervical lymph nodes. The lack of classical lymph vessels within brain tissue complicates immune surveillance of the CNS, and therefore, cellular emigration out of the CNS parenchyma requires alternate pathways. Whereas invasion of blood-derived mononuclear cells and their transformation into ramified, microglia-like cells in areas of axonal degeneration across an intact BBB have been demonstrated, it still remained unclear whether these cells reside permanently, undergo apoptosis, or leave the brain to present antigen in lympho…
Prediction of Aquatic Toxicity of Benzene Derivatives to Tetrahymena pyriformis According to OECD Principles
2016
Background: Many QSAR studies have been developed to predict acute toxicity over several biomarkers like Pimephales promelas, Daphnia magna and Tetrahymena pyriformis. Regardless of the progress made in this field there are still some gaps to be resolved such as the prediction of aquatic toxicity over the protozoan T. pyriformis still lack a QSAR study focused in accomplish the OECD principles. Methods: Atom-based quadratic indices are used to obtain quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) models for the prediction of aquatic toxicity. Our models agree with the principles required by the OECD for QSAR models to regulatory purposes. The database employed consists of 392 substitut…
Phytochemistry of Weigela x “kosteriana variegata” (Caprifoliaceae)
2018
One new triterpene glycoside 3- O-β-D-xylopyranosyl-(1→4)-[β-D-glucopyranosyl-(1→3)]-β-D-xylopyranosyl-(1→4)-β-D-xylopyranosyl-(1→3)-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→2)-α-L-arabinopyranosyloleanolic acid, was isolated from Weigela x “kosteriana variegata” (Caprifoliaceae), with three known ones. Their structures were characterized by a combination of mass spectrometry and 1D and 2D NMR spectrocopic techniques including 1H- and 13C NMR, COSY, TOCSY, NOESY, HSQC, and HMBC experiments. The toxicological properties of some glycosides were determined with a zebrafish-based assay. The results show that the most active compounds were toxic to the larvae in the range of 1 μM.
