In the normal lung, a dominant structural element is an elastic "line element" that originates in the central bronchi and inserts into the distal airspaces. Despite its structural importance, the process that leads to development of the cable line element is unknown. To investigate the morphologic events contributing to its development, we used optical clearing methods to examine the postnatal rat lung. An unexpected finding was numerous spheres, with a median diameter of 1-2 µm, within the primary septa of the rat lung. Therefore, finding effective interventions and therapies is extremely important. AD is one of over 20 different disorders known as tauopathies, characterized by the pathological aggregation and accumulation of tau, a microtubule-associated protein. Background: Aβ 1-42 peptide abnormal production is associated with the development and maintenance of neuroinflammation and oxidative stress in brains from Alzheimer disease (AD) patients. Suppression of neuroinflammation may then represent a suitable therapeutic target in AD. We evaluated the efficacy of IFNβ1a in attenuating cognitive impairment and inflammation in an animal model of AD. Methods: A rat model of AD was obtained by intra-hippocampal injection of Aβ 1-42 peptide (23 μg/2 μl). After 6 days, 3.6 μg of IFNβ1a was given subcutaneously (s.c.) for 12 days. Optical nanofibers (ONFs) are excellent nanophotonic platforms for many applications such as optical sensing, quantum photonics, and nonlinear optics, due to both tight optical confinement and their evanescent field. From an acoustic viewpoint, it has recently been reported the observation of a new class of Brillouin acoustic resonances in optical nanofibers, including hybrid shear/longitudinal acoustic waves (HAWs) and surface acoustic waves (SAWs) [1–2]. A new lectin has been isolated from the sponge Chondrilla nucula. The purified CN lectin is a protein composed of four polypeptide chains with a molecular weight (MW) of 15600. The isoelectric point is 4.5 and the amino acid composition is rich in aspartic and glutamic acid. The lectin precipitates erythrocytes from humans (A, B, O) with a titre between 25 and 210. The CN lectin is d-galactose-specific and displays a moderate mitogenic effect on spleen lymphocytes from mice and on CD4-positive human H9 cells. Background Alexander disease (AxD) is a rare disease caused by mutations in the gene encoding glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP). The disease is characterized by presence of GFAP aggregates in the cytoplasm of astrocytes and loss of myelin. Objectives Determine the effect of AxD-related mutations on adult neurogenesis. Methods We transfected different types of mutant GFAP into neurospheres using the nucleofection technique. International audience; Objectives - To develop and validate a prediction score, to quantify, within 48 h of Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia (SAB) diagnosis, the risk of IE, and therefore determine priority for urgent echocardiography. Methods - Consecutive adult patients with SAB in 8 French university hospitals between 2009 and 2011 were prospectively enrolled and followed-up 3 months. A predictive model was developed and internally validated using bootstrap procedures.
