Cyber-Security in Digital Metering Value Chain for Mountain Landslide Warning
2021
The Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE) are initiating a digitalization process that involves the use of a digital metering value chain and cloud computing. The main objective of this study is to investigate how NVE can ensure cyber-security in digital meters and the cloubased metering value chain for mountain landslide warning. The study is based on a qualitative approach including methods like document analysis and semi structured interviews used as input to a risk analysis based on the ISO 31000 standard. The risk analysis covered three different scenarios from NVE. Those three scenarios were internal, external Norwegian, and transnational value chains for metering lan…

Mobility and Spatio-Temporal Exposure Control
2013
Modern risk assessment methods cover many issues and encompass both risk analysis and corresponding prevention/mitigation measures. However, there is still room for improvement and one aspect that may benefit from more work is “exposure control”.The “exposure” an asset experiences plays an important part in the risks facing the asset.Amongst the aspects that all too regularly get exposed is user identities and user location information, and in a context with mobile subscriber and mobility in the service hosting (VM migration/mobility) the problems associated with lost identity/location privacy becomes urgent. In this paper we look at “exposure control” as a way for analyzing and protecting use…
Risk Assessment of Toxicants to Pelagic Food-Webs: A Simulation Study
1991
For a generalized mathematical model of the pelagic compartment of a lake ecosystem we show that a small variance in input parameters may result in a large variance in predicted biomasses. Since input parameters for this kind of models always show a great variance, we conclude that deterministic prediction of biomass-trajectories is rather useless and demonstrate how stochastic analysis of the model may lead to a helpful risk analysis.
A critical review on supply chain risk – Definition, measure and modeling
2015
Abstract Economic systems are increasingly prone to complexity and uncertainty. Therefore, making well-informed decisions requires risk analysis, control and mitigation. In some areas such as finance, insurance, crisis management and health care, the importance of considering risk is largely acknowledged and well-elaborated, yet rather heterogeneous concepts and approaches for risk management have been developed. The increased frequency and the severe consequences of past supply chain disruptions have resulted in an increasing interest in risk. This development has led to the adoption of the risk concepts, terminologies and methods from related fields. In this paper, existing approaches for…
Assessing supply chain risks in the automotive industry through a modified MCDM-based FMECA
2020
Supply chains are complex networks that receive assiduous attention in the literature. Like any complex network, a supply chain is subject to a wide variety of risks that can result in significant economic losses and negative impacts in terms of image and prestige for companies. In circumstances of aggressive competition among companies, effective management of supply chain risks (SCRs) is crucial, and is currently a very active field of research. Failure Mode, Effects and Criticality Analysis (FMECA) has been recently extended to SCR identification and prioritization, aiming at reducing potential losses caused by lack of risk control. This article has a twofold objective. First, SCR assess…
Risk analysis using fuzzy set theory of accidental exposure of medical staff during brachytherapy procedures
2010
Using fuzzy set theory, this paper presents results from risk analyses that explore potential exposure of medical operators working in a high dose rate brachytherapy irradiation plant. In these analyses, the HEART methodology, a first generation method for human reliability analysis, has been employed to evaluate the probability of human error. This technique has been modified on the basis of fuzzy set concepts to take into account, more directly, the uncertainties of the so-called error-promoting factors on which the method is based. Moreover, with regard to some identified accident scenarios, fuzzy potential dose was also evaluated to estimate the relevant risk. The results also provide s…
Liver failure after partial hepatic resection: definition, pathophysiology, risk factors and treatment
2008
Liver failure is a dreaded and often fatal complication that sometimes follows a partial hepatic resection. This article reviews the definition, incidence, pathogenesis, risk factors, risk assessment, prevention, clinical features and treatment of post-resectional liver failure (PLF). A systematic, computerized search was performed using key words related to 'partial hepatic resection' and 'liver failure' to review most relevant literature about PLF published in the last 20 years. The reported incidence of PLF ranges between 0.7 and 9.1%. An inadequate quantity or quality of residual liver mass are key events in its pathogenesis. Major risk factors are the presence of comorbid conditions, p…
Morbidity and mortality after esophagectomy for esophageal carcinoma: A risk analysis
2005
Abstract Background The study was aimed to identify pre- and intraoperative risk factors that potentially influence morbidity and mortality after esophagectomy for esophageal carcinoma with particular emphasis on the predominant tumor types. Patients and methods Between September 1985 and March 2004, 424 patients underwent esophagectomy for esophageal carcinoma. Of these, 186 (43.9%) patients had a transhiatal, and 231 (54.5%) patients underwent a transthoracic procedure with two-field lymphadenectomy. Pre-, intraoperative risk factors and tumor characteristics were included in the risk analysis to assess their influence on postoperative morbidity and mortality. Results Multivariate analysi…
