Ray optics behavior of flux avalanche propagation in superconducting films
2015
Experimental evidence of wave properties of dendritic flux avalanches in superconducting films is reported. Using magneto-optical imaging the propagation of dendrites across boundaries between a bare NbN film and areas coated by a Cu layer was visualized, and it was found that the propagation is refracted in full quantitative agreement with Snell's law. For the studied film of 170 nm thickness and a $0.9\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}\ensuremath{\mu}\mathrm{m}$ thick metal layer, the refractive index was close to $n=1.4$. The origin of the refraction is believed to be caused by the dendrites propagating as an electromagnetic shock wave, similar to damped modes considered previously for normal …

The analogy is justified by the large dissipa…
Simulations of the structure and rheology of wet webs
2009
In this Thesis we modified a recently introduced model for fiber suspensions to be applicable to wet fiber networks so as to analyze by computer simulations their structural and rheological properties. These properties were compared, under tensile loading in particular, to those of wet and dry paper. The model used operated at the fiber level, where the dynamics of fiber motion were determined by fiber stiffness and fiber-fiber interactions such as friction and adhesive forces. Water surface tension, inter-fiber contact area, and moisture content all contributed to the latter force. The tensile strength of wet fiber networks could be described in terms of a very simple function of adhesion-…
Stormwater Source Control as a Strategy for Sustainable Development: State of the Practice and Perceived Trends
2005
The primary objective of the paper is to draw upon the experiences acquired in many parts of the world to provide an up-to-date summary of the state of the practice for source control techniques and approaches, in a sustainable development context. After a discussion of the prevailing context for urban drainage approaches, three main themes covering techniques and design criteria, institutional aspects and performance issues are discussed relative to source control implementation. The discussion is based on findings from the compilation and analysis of available literature, recently developed databases, the experience of the different members of the SOCOMA group and recent research on desig…

Ars moriendi w "Baśniach" Hansa Christiana Andersena
2016
The author focuses on Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tales which, in her opinion, became a cultural phenomenon because of ending the civilisation of archetypes, metaphysical and existential truths dating back to the „kindergarten of mankind”. The centre of the article is the motif of death. almost omnipresent in the Danish writer’s works. Death will not spare anyone - this is the thesis argued by the author based on analysis of selected fairy tales by Andersen.

Sympathetic nervous system synchrony between participants of couple therapy
2017
Synchrony, or the moment-by-moment coordination between people in social situations, has been connected with increased liking and rapport. However, this type of synchrony is an underexplored area with regard to autonomic nervous system activity. The purpose of this research was to study physiological synchrony between participants in couple therapy by focusing on the sympathetic nervous system (SNS), which reflects arousal and emotional reactions. The data comprised 12 couple therapy cases (24 clients, 10 therapists) participating in the Relational Mind in Events of Change in Multiactor Therapeutic Dialogues (2013-2016) research project. Electrodermal activity (EDA) and heart rate were reco…
Associations Between Sympathetic Nervous System Synchrony, Movement Synchrony, and Speech in Couple Therapy
2022
Background: Research on interpersonal synchrony has mostly focused on a single modality, and hence little is known about the connections between different types of social attunement. In this study, the relationship between sympathetic nervous system synchrony, movement synchrony, and the amount of speech were studied in couple therapy. Methods: Data comprised 12 couple therapy cases (24 clients and 10 therapists working in pairs as co-therapists). Synchrony in electrodermal activity, head and body movement, and the amount of speech and simultaneous speech during the sessions were analyzed in 12 sessions at the start of couple therapy (all 72 dyads) and eight sessions at the end of therapy (…
