Fatigue behaviour of self-piercing riveting of aluminium blanks and carbon fibre composite panels

2012

In this article, the fatigue behaviour of self-piercing riveted joints in 2024-T6 aluminium sheets and carbon fibre composite panels is studied through experimental tests and numerical simulations. This study, aimed to evaluate the best process conditions and the mechanical behaviour of the joint itself, can be divided into few phases: the first one in which the static mechanical behaviour was investigated in order to evaluate the best process conditions (such as the best value of oil pressure of the riveting system) and the second one which had the purpose to determine the fatigue behaviour of the joint. Finally, a finite element method analysis of the riveting process was developed in or…

On the self-piercing riveting of aluminium blanks and carbon fibre composite panels

2010

In the present paper the possibility to join aluminium alloys blanks and carbon fibre composites panels by self-piercing riveting operation is considered. In particular a few case studies were carried out at the varying of the process parameters. The effectiveness of the obtained joints was tested through tensile tests and through fatigue ones; what is more the process mechanics was highlighted through proper macro and micro observations of the transverse sections of the joints. The failure mechanics of the obtained joints were also considered in order to highlight the mechanisms which occur and determine the lost of the load carrying capability of the joints. Finally a numerical model of t…

Review on mechanical joining by plastic deformation

2022

Mechanical joining technologies are increasingly used in multi-material lightweight constructions and offer opportunities to create versatile joining processes due to their low heat input, robustness to metallurgical incompatibilities and various process variants. They can be categorised into technologies which require an auxiliary joining element, or do not require an auxiliary joining element. A typical example for a mechanical joining process with auxiliary joining element is self-piercing riveting. A wide range of processes exist which are not requiring an auxiliary joining element. This allows both point-shaped (e.g., by clinching) and line-shaped (e.g., friction stir welding) joints t…

Drivetrain design optimization for electrically actuated systems via mixed integer programing

2015

The proposed paper presents a method to optimally select components of a drivetrain for an electrically actuated machine. A simple mathematical model of the machine is established and inequality constraints which determine the choice of drivetrain components are formulated. Elements to be picked (namely, a motor, a gearbox, and a drive) are taken from a discrete set of data provided in the catalogs of industrial motors and drives manufacturers. By solving an optimization problem, a combination of components which both satisfy design requirements and minimize the total drivetrain cost is selected. The operation of the selected drivetrain is verified against the motor loadability curves. In a…

A Bond Graph Approach to Modeling and Simulation of Nonlinear Wind Turbine System

2013

This chapter addresses the problem of bond graph methodology as a graphical approach for modeling of wind turbine generating systems. The purpose of this chapter is to show some of the benefits of the bond graph approach in contributing a model for wind turbine systems. We will present a nonlinear model of a wind turbine generating system, containing pitch, drive train, tower motion and generator. All which will be modeled by means of bond graph. We will especially focus on the drive train, and show the difference between modeling with a classical mechanical method and by using bond graph. The model consists of realistic parameters, but we are not trying to validate a specific wind turbine …

Influence of the distance between rivets in self-piercing riveting bonded joints made of carbon fiber panels and AA2024 blanks

2012

Abstract The increasing use of new materials alternative to steel in manufacturing industry has led to a greater emphasis on the improvement and the development of specific joining approaches allowing to get effective mechanical properties even when different materials are joined together. It should be observed that often the traditional welding techniques show several limitations as aluminum or magnesium alloys are used, and, what is more, they are not compatible with composite materials. The development of structures made of these materials has renewed the use of mechanical fastening operations. The present paper investigates the influence of the distance between rivets in self-piercing r…

Online Fault Diagnosis System for Electric Powertrains Using Advanced Signal Processing and Machine Learning

2018

Online condition monitoring and fault diagnosis systems are necessary to prevent unexpected downtimes in critical electric powertrains. The machine learning algorithms provide a better way to diagnose faults in complex cases, such as mixed faults and/or in variable speed conditions. Most of studies focus on training phases of the machine learning algorithms, but the development of the trained machine learning algorithms for an online diagnosis system is not detailed. In this study, a complete procedure of training and implementation of an online fault diagnosis system is presented and discussed. Aspects of the development of an online fault diagnosis based on machine learning algorithms are…

A Review on Approaches for Condition Based Maintenance in Applications with Induction Machines located Offshore

2012

Published version of an article in the journal: Modeling, Identification and Control. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.4173/mic.2012.2.4 Open access This paper presents a review of different approaches for Condition Based Maintenance (CBM) of induction machines and drive trains in offshore applications. The paper contains an overview of common failure modes, monitoring techniques, approaches for diagnostics, and an overview of typical maintenance actions. Although many papers have been written in this area before, this paper puts an emphasis on recent developments and limits the scope to induction machines and drive trains applied in applications located offshore.

Frugivorous birds dispersing braconid parasitoids via endozoochory

2008

Adult braconid wasps (Bracon sp.) emerged from the droppings of frugivorous birds (Turdus blackbirds and thrushes) collected in a rural environment in southern Europe. It was thus demonstrated for the first time that an insect parasitoid of a fruit-infesting insect (lepidopteran tortricid) can survive bird ingestion and gut passage inside a seed (privet Ligustrum vulgare), constituting a case of an evolutionary tetrad.
